The hotels near McMaster University are the Visitors Inn on Main Street West, about 5 to 10 minutes from campus, and the downtown hotels (Hampton Inn, Sheraton Hamilton, Homewood Suites and Staybridge Suites), about 10 to 15 minutes away. Burlington and Ancaster hotels are 15 to 25 minutes out. A HamiltonLimo.net sedan from a downtown hotel to campus is a planning $75–100, all-in plus HST.
Hotels near McMaster University: what is actually close
McMaster's main campus sits at 1280 Main Street West in Westdale, on the west side of the lower city, bordered by Cootes Paradise and the Royal Botanical Gardens lands. There are no large hotels in Westdale itself, so visitors stay a short drive east in the core or along Main Street West. Our downtown Hamilton hotels page lists the core hotels with their addresses and airport fares; this post looks at them from the campus side, for the specific trips McMaster generates.
The options, checked on 30 September 2026 against the airport's accommodation list, the brands' sites and current listings (no partnership implied):
| Hotel | Address | To McMaster campus | To YHM | To Pearson |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Visitors Inn | 649 Main St W | about 2–3 km · 5–10 min | about 17 km · 20–25 min | about 66 km · 45–60 min |
| Hampton Inn by Hilton Hamilton | 7 Queen St N | about 4 km · 10–15 min | about 16 km · 20–25 min | about 69 km · 45–65 min |
| Sheraton Hamilton Hotel | 116 King St W | about 5 km · 10–15 min | about 15 km · 20–25 min | about 70 km · 45–65 min |
| Homewood Suites by Hilton Hamilton | 40 Bay St S | about 5 km · 10–15 min | about 15 km · 20–25 min | about 69 km · 45–65 min |
| Staybridge Suites Hamilton – Downtown | 20 Caroline St S | about 5 km · 10–15 min | about 15 km · 20–25 min | about 69 km · 45–65 min |
Distances and times are dispatcher planning estimates on a weekday outside the rush. Confirm rates, parking and room types with each hotel.
Match the stay to the McMaster trip
- Convocation. Book early; hotels near campus fill for the ceremonies. McMaster holds convocation in spring and fall; check McMaster's site for this year's dates and the ceremony schedule for your faculty.
- September move-in. Parents usually want one night near campus with a car or van for boxes.
- Campus tours and open houses. A single night downtown, with dinner on Locke Street or James Street North.
- Visiting researchers and conference guests. A week at a suite-style hotel downtown, with meetings on campus and at McMaster Innovation Park.
- Families of patients at McMaster Children's Hospital and the McMaster University Medical Centre on campus, who may need a longer stay close by. Ask the hospital about any family accommodation programmes; our medical appointments page explains how rides to clinic doors work.

Convocation day by car: a timeline that works
Convocation is the day parking fails. Graduates must arrive early for robing, families want to sit together, and the campus lots and Westdale streets fill quickly. A plan many families use:
- Morning: a luxury van or executive SUV from the hotel, timed to arrive at the drop-off point the university designates for the ceremony, with the graduate first.
- Ceremony: book the car hourly and the chauffeur waits nearby, or book one way and a return from a confirmed pickup spot.
- Afternoon: photographs at the Royal Botanical Gardens or around campus, then a celebration lunch.
- Evening: back to the hotel, or straight to Pearson for relatives flying home.
Our lead product, the hourly private chauffeur, fits this day well: a luxury van or executive SUV is a planning $190–235 an hour, all-in plus HST, with a 3-hour minimum, and three generations travel together with the gowns, flowers and the grandparents' walker. See our McMaster convocation day guide and the graduation and convocation page.
Move-in and move-out weekends
Early September and the end of the April exam period are the heaviest weekends for campus traffic. For a family flying in, the usual plan is a car from the airport to the hotel with the luggage, a night downtown, then a van to residence in the morning with the boxes. Tell us about a mini-fridge, bedding, a bike or a desk chair when you book; a sedan carries three bags, and an executive SUV or luxury van far more. The chauffeur drops at the residence loading area where the university allows, and helps unload.
Arriving from Pearson or YHM
- From Toronto Pearson to a downtown hotel or the campus is about 65 to 70 km and 45 to 65 minutes, a planning $245–300 in a business sedan. Our post on Pearson airport to McMaster University covers the arrival in detail.
- From Hamilton airport (YHM) it is about 15 to 17 km and 20 to 25 minutes, a planning $90–115.
- From Union Station it is about 68 km and 50 to 75 minutes, $270–330. GO buses also serve the McMaster campus directly; check GO Transit for routes and times.
For flight arrivals the chauffeur tracks the flight and waits at the commercial pickup area, with 30 minutes included after actual landing on Canadian domestic and US flights and 60 minutes on other international arrivals. Many McMaster families fly in from overseas; meet and greet inside arrivals with a name board is an optional add-on at a planning $25–35.

Getting around Westdale and the west end
Westdale village, on King Street West north of campus, has cafés and restaurants within walking distance of McMaster. Locke Street, Dundurn National Historic Site and the Hess Village area are a few minutes' drive east. For a visiting parent with an afternoon free, the Royal Botanical Gardens and the waterfalls on the escarpment are close; the RBG site lists hours. An hourly sedan at a planning $120–145 an hour, 3-hour minimum, makes a half-day loop easy; see city and waterfall tours.
Staying outside Hamilton
When convocation or a big conference fills the core, Burlington hotels along the lake are 15 to 20 minutes from campus via the 403, and the Ancaster and Upper James hotels near YHM are 15 to 25 minutes. See Burlington hotels and Mountain and Ancaster hotels. The same dispatch desk runs the daily trips to campus from any of them.
Timing campus trips around traffic
The 403 at the Main Street West exits, Main Street itself and the streets around the campus entrances are busiest on weekday mornings at the start of term, on move-in weekends and when Hamilton Stadium or TD Coliseum have evening events. From a downtown hotel, allow 15 minutes to campus at quiet times and 25 at peak. On convocation days, add 15 minutes on top and follow the university's drop-off instructions.
Choosing the vehicle
- Business sedan (3 passengers, 3 bags): a campus visit or a parent's meeting.
- Business SUV (5 and 5): a black Tahoe or Yukon at close to sedan money, with winter traction; $145–175 an hour.
- Luxury van (6 and 6): grandparents, an easy step-in, a folding walker or wheelchair in the back. Our fleet has no ramp vehicles; for ramp transport we refer you to a specialist accessible provider.
- Executive SUV (6 and 6): move-in with boxes, winter visits.
- Sprinter (14 and 14): a large family or a department's visiting delegation. See the Sprinter.
- Jet Sprinter (7 and 5): a VIP lounge Sprinter for visiting board members or donors, with captain's chairs and work tables; $650–750 an hour.
Child seats are available on request at a planning $10–15 each, added at booking.
A campus-visit weekend for an out-of-town family
A family from Ottawa visiting McMaster with a Grade 12 student might plan it like this. Friday: fly into Pearson, car to a downtown hotel, dinner on Locke Street. Saturday: a car to the campus open house at 9:30, a walk through Westdale for lunch, and a 3-hour hourly booking in the afternoon to see residences off campus, the waterfront and a waterfall before the light goes. Sunday: a car back to Pearson. Three one-way transfers and one short hourly block, each priced before they travel, and nobody has to learn Hamilton's one-way streets or find parking in Westdale.
Visiting researchers and conference guests
McMaster hosts academic conferences, thesis defences and visiting faculty throughout the year, and McMaster Innovation Park on Longwood Road South brings company visitors too. For a week-long visit, a suite-style hotel downtown and a standing morning pickup to the building you need is simpler than a rental car and a campus parking permit. Departments organising several guests can book in one place and receive every confirmation; a corporate account, described on our corporate page, consolidates the invoices.
GO buses, the HSR and when to use them
McMaster has its own GO bus terminal on campus, served by several GO routes to Burlington, Toronto-area stations and other university towns; check GO Transit for current routes and times. The HSR connects the campus with downtown and the rest of the city. For a student with a backpack, transit is the obvious choice. For families with luggage, older relatives or a tight convocation schedule, a booked car is easier.
Families staying near McMaster for a hospital stay
When a child is admitted to McMaster Children's Hospital or a relative is treated at the McMaster University Medical Centre, families can find themselves in Hamilton for days or weeks. A hotel on Main Street West or downtown keeps the daily trip to campus short. Some families book a standing daily ride at the same time each morning and evening; others keep a chauffeur by the hour on the days with several appointments. Either way, the fare is fixed before the trip and changes go to one dispatch desk.
Mistakes to avoid when visiting McMaster
- Booking the hotel after convocation dates are announced. Rooms go quickly; book when you know the season.
- Planning to park on campus on convocation day. Use a drop-off and a pre-booked return.
- Choosing a sedan for move-in. Boxes and bedding need an SUV or van.
- Forgetting the terminal. Check whether your Pearson flight uses Terminal 1 or Terminal 3.
How to book direct
Open the HamiltonLimo.net reservation engine, enter the hotel or campus building, flight or train, travellers and bags, choose one way or hourly, and confirm the fixed fare, which includes the chauffeur, vehicle, fuel, 407 tolls if used, airport fees and gratuity, with HST shown separately. Cancellation from scheduled pickup: more than 72 hours, free; 72 hours or less, 10 per cent; 48 hours or less, 50 per cent; 24 hours or less or a no-show, the full fare. Our university and campus visits page covers other schools, and our sibling post on business hotels in downtown Hamilton helps visiting researchers choose a base.
