James Street North (galleries, Art Crawl on the second Friday of each month) and Locke Street South (independent shops and restaurants) are both in the lower city, about 3 km and 8–12 minutes apart. A one-way black car within Hamilton is $75–100. For an evening covering both, HamiltonLimo.net's hourly chauffeur runs $120–145 per hour in a sedan, three-hour minimum.
James Street North and Locke Street by car: the plan
Visitors who ask what to do in Hamilton at night are usually pointed to two streets. James Street North, running from King Street up to the West Harbour, is the gallery and arts strip, busy with studios, bars and restaurants, and home of the monthly Art Crawl. Locke Street South, running south from Main Street West towards the escarpment in the Kirkendall neighbourhood, is the relaxed neighbourhood high street, with independent shops, cafés, bakeries and some of the city's most booked dinner spots. They are close, but not a comfortable walk apart in the evening, and parking on both is tight when they are busy. A car with a driver bridges them, waits outside and takes everyone home, which is what our private chauffeur service is for.
Planning fares for a night out
Planning ranges for a business sedan, all-in with HST shown separately; the reservation engine quotes the exact trip.
| Trip | Planning fare | Distance | Drive time |
|---|---|---|---|
| James Street North to Locke Street | $75–100 one way | about 3 km | 8–12 min |
| Downtown hotel to either street | $75–100 one way | 1–3 km | 5–10 min |
| Ancaster, Dundas or Stoney Creek to James North | $75–100 one way | 10–15 km | 15–25 min |
| Burlington to James North | $90–115 one way | about 15 km | 15–25 min |
| Oakville to James North | $145–175 one way | about 40 km | 30–40 min |
| Hourly, business sedan | $120–145 per hour | 3 h minimum | both streets and home |
| Hourly, Sprinter (up to 14) | $330–385 per hour | 3 h minimum | birthday and group nights |
A four-hour evening in a sedan is roughly $480–580 all-in plus HST. For one-way hops our black car service works too, but once there are two stops and a ride home, hourly is simpler.
What Art Crawl is and when it happens
Art Crawl takes place on James Street North on the second Friday of every month, from around 5 p.m. until late. Galleries, studios, shops, restaurants and bars stay open into the evening, and artists, musicians and vendors set up along the street. There is no formal programme; that is part of the appeal. According to Tourism Hamilton, from May to October a portion of James Street North between York Boulevard and Murray Street closes to cars, turning it into a pedestrian street party. Check the date and closure details on Tourism Hamilton before booking, because special editions and weather can change things.
Where the car drops off on James Street North
On a normal evening the chauffeur sets you down on James Street North itself, close to the gallery or restaurant you name. On an Art Crawl Friday in the warmer months, the closed section between York Boulevard and Murray Street means the car stops at the edge of the closure instead, usually on York Boulevard near James or on Murray Street, and the dispatcher sends you the exact pickup corner by message before the night ends. The same applies in September during Supercrawl, the much bigger annual festival on the same street; our Supercrawl guide covers its much wider closures. Uphill, the Hamilton GO Centre and the King Street core are a few minutes' drive away.

Galleries and culture around James North
The street's small commercial galleries and artist-run spaces change often, so rather than list names that may have moved, we suggest starting at the corner of James and King William and walking north, ducking into anything open. The Art Gallery of Hamilton, the city's major public gallery, is a few minutes away on King Street West and makes a good daytime anchor before an evening on James North. The Cathedral Basilica of Christ the King and the historic buildings of the core are all within a short drive, and the West Harbour waterfront is at the bottom of the street.
Restaurants and evenings on James North
James North's food scene mixes casual spots, cocktail bars and chef-driven dining rooms, and the best tables are booked well ahead on Art Crawl Fridays and Supercrawl weekend. Book dinner first, then book the car to fit it: our dispatchers plan the pickup so you arrive at the restaurant on time even with closures and slow traffic around the core. If your group is splitting between dinner and bar-hopping, an hourly booking lets the chauffeur move between the two without new bookings.
Locke Street South: what to expect
Locke Street is calmer and more neighbourhood in feel: a stretch of mostly low-rise shopfronts with independent boutiques, home stores, cafés, bakeries, wine bars and restaurants, running south from Main Street West towards Aberdeen Avenue. It is good for a weekend brunch-and-browse, a long lunch, or dinner after an afternoon on James North. Parking is mostly on-street and scarce at peak times, so being set down at the door and collected later is a real convenience. Our Hamilton neighbourhood car service page covers local drops across the lower city.
A sample Art Crawl evening
A four-hour hourly plan for four friends, an Art Crawl Friday in June:
- 17:30 pickup in Ancaster (about 12 km, 20 min down the 403 and in on Main or King).
- 18:00 drop at York Boulevard near James North; walk the closed street, galleries and street performers.
- 19:30 pickup at the agreed corner; 3 km and 10 minutes to Locke Street for a 19:45 dinner reservation.
- 21:15 optional return to James North for late music or a nightcap.
- 21:30 home to Ancaster.
In an executive SUV that is roughly $760–940 all-in plus HST; in a business sedan for three, about $480–580.

Seasons and timing
May to October is Art Crawl's street-closure season and patio season on both streets. September brings Supercrawl, the busiest weekend of the year on James North, when we recommend booking the car well ahead. Winter Art Crawls are indoor affairs and far quieter, with easier parking and drop-offs. Weekend brunch on Locke Street peaks late morning. On Hamilton Tiger-Cats game nights at Hamilton Stadium (the former Tim Hortons Field) and big shows at TD Coliseum, traffic around the core slows, so allow extra time for any pickup that has a reservation attached.
Vehicle choice for a night out
- Business sedan: up to three; the easiest to set down on busy streets.
- Business SUV: up to five friends in a black Tahoe or Yukon at $145–175 per hour, so a four-hour night is about $580–700.
- First-class sedan: dates, anniversaries and client dinners.
- Executive SUV or luxury van: up to six friends in one car.
- Sprinter: birthday groups and team nights of up to fourteen; drop-offs happen on side streets, and the dispatcher plans them in advance.
- Jet Sprinter: a VIP lounge Sprinter for up to seven with captain's chairs, for a milestone birthday that wants comfort over headcount; $650–750 an hour.
- Stretch limousine or party bus: available through vetted partner operators for bachelorettes and milestone birthdays, with four-hour minimums; see party bus rental.
Getting home safely
The reason many locals book a chauffeur for James North and Locke Street is simple: nobody has to drive. Ontario's impaired-driving laws are strict, and taxis and ride-hail cars are scarce right at closing time on a festival night. Book by the hour and your car is parked round the corner the whole evening. Agree a final pickup time and corner with the chauffeur, and message if the evening runs long; extra time is billed in 30-minute blocks at the same hourly rate.
Coming from Toronto or the airport
Visitors staying in Toronto can ride GO to Hamilton and have us take them home late, when trains thin out, or book the car both ways. Union Station to Hamilton is about 68 km, 50–75 minutes, at a planning figure of $270–330 one way in a sedan. From Toronto Pearson, flight tracking and curbside pickup at the commercial pickup area are standard, with meet and greet available as an add-on.
Supercrawl weekend on James North
Supercrawl is the big one: a free weekend of music, art installations and food across a long closed stretch of James Street North, usually in September. The Supercrawl organisers' site posts the dates, stages and closure map each year. Traffic around the core, the GO stations and the waterfront slows sharply, and drop-offs move to the outer edges of the closure. We recommend booking the car early, agreeing a fixed meeting corner away from the main stages, and allowing an extra 15–20 minutes on every pickup.
Daytime on the two streets
The streets are not only an evening outing. Saturday mornings are a good time to combine a coffee on Locke Street with the Hamilton Farmers' Market downtown, one of the oldest markets in the province, a few minutes from James North. Afternoons suit gallery visits before the evening crowd arrives, when the studios are quieter and there is room to talk with the artists. Shoppers can leave bags in the trunk between stops on an hourly booking, which is much easier than carrying them from store to store along the street. Visiting business travellers staying downtown often book a three-hour block: a client lunch on Locke Street, an hour of browsing on James North and the ride back to the hotel or the station.
Getting to James North from elsewhere in Hamilton
From the mountain, the chauffeur usually comes down the James Mountain Road or Jolley Cut access into the core; from the east end, along King or Main; from Dundas and Ancaster, in on the 403 and Main Street West, which also passes the top of Locke Street. On Art Crawl Fridays these routes load up after 5 p.m., so we build in a margin for any dinner reservation. Families from Stoney Creek, Waterdown and Binbrook often book a one-way drop on James North and a separate pickup at a fixed time from Locke Street, which works well when the evening is predictable.
Why book direct with HamiltonLimo.net
One booking on our own reservation engine, a fixed all-in fare before you confirm, no surge on Art Crawl nights, no meter running while you browse. One dispatch desk plans every stop and knows where the closures fall. Cancellations more than 72 hours before pickup cost nothing; a sliding charge applies closer in, as set out in our terms. We have no connection to the galleries, restaurants or festival organisers; we simply get you there and home.
