Convocation car service in Hamilton is usually an hourly booking: an executive SUV or luxury van with a chauffeur for 4 to 8 hours, collecting relatives, waiting through the McMaster or Mohawk ceremony and taking everyone to lunch or dinner. HamiltonLimo.net planning figures are about $190–235 per hour for an SUV and $330–385 for a Sprinter, all-in plus HST, 3-hour minimum. Family airport pickups can be added.
Convocation car service in Hamilton: what families actually book
Convocation is not prom. The passengers are parents, grandparents, a partner, sometimes a sibling who flew in that morning, and the graduate in a gown who needs to be in the robing room at a set time while everyone else finds seats. The day has fixed moments and long gaps, and parking on campus is the part everyone dreads.
That is why most families book our hourly chauffeur service in Hamilton rather than a string of one-way rides. The same vehicle drops the graduate early, returns for the family, waits through the ceremony, carries flowers and gifts, and moves everyone to the restaurant. If the family is large, a Sprinter keeps everyone together; if it is two parents and a grandmother, a business sedan is enough.
High school proms and formals are a different kind of booking, with student rules and group splits; those are on our prom limo page.

Why hourly suits a convocation day
Ceremony start times are fixed; ceremony end times are not. A large faculty can take a long time to walk every graduate across the stage, and then there are photographs in the lobby, on the lawn and with the one professor everyone wants in the picture. A one-way pickup booked for 1:30 p.m. becomes a problem at 1:25 p.m. when the family has not yet found the graduate.
With an hourly booking the chauffeur stays in touch by text, moves the car when the family is ready, and deals with the campus traffic on your behalf. It is also the only way to handle the day's other errands without a second car: collecting the grandparents, stopping at a florist, picking up the cake, dropping luggage at a hotel. Our hourly versus point-to-point guide walks through the maths.
McMaster University: getting on and off campus
McMaster University sits in Westdale in the west end, between Main Street West, Sterling Street and Cootes Drive, about 5 km and 10–15 minutes from downtown Hamilton and just off Highway 403. The campus is compact and largely pedestrian at its core; on convocation days visitor parking fills early and the roads around the edges slow to a crawl as hundreds of families arrive at once.
McMaster holds convocation ceremonies in spring and again in the fall, faculty by faculty over several days - and in 2026 every ceremony is downtown at FirstOntario Concert Hall (1 Summers Lane), not on the Westdale campus. Venues, times and arrival instructions are published by the university and can change year to year, so check the registrar's convocation page for your graduate's ceremony and send the details to dispatch. The chauffeur then plans the approach, the drop-off point closest to the venue that campus traffic staff allow, and a pickup spot that the family can find again after the crowd disperses. Pick one landmark, not "the front door", and share it with everyone before the ceremony.
Mohawk College: the Fennell campus on the Mountain
Mohawk College has its main Fennell campus on the Mountain at Fennell Avenue West and West 5th Street, about 8 km and 15–20 minutes from downtown via the James Mountain Road or the Jolley Cut, and a few minutes from the Linc. Mohawk also teaches at other sites, including its Stoney Creek campus and programs delivered with McMaster, so confirm where your graduate's ceremony actually takes place.
Mohawk convocations are typically held in late spring and at other points in the year for some programs; the college publishes the schedule and location. From the Mountain, the chauffeur can take the family to lunch in the upper city, on Concession Street, or down to the lower city and the lake. On a snowy fall ceremony day the escarpment accesses need extra time; the chauffeur will leave early.
Other ceremonies and out-of-town convocations
Families in Hamilton also celebrate graduations from Redeemer University in Ancaster, from high schools across the city and from universities further away. When the ceremony is out of town, the booking becomes a round trip with waiting, which is where hourly shines:
- Guelph: about 60 km, 45–55 minutes each way.
- Kitchener-Waterloo: about 70 km, 50–65 minutes via the 403 and Highway 6 or the 401.
- St. Catharines: about 55 km, 35–45 minutes along the QEW.
- London: about 130 km, 85–105 minutes; see Hamilton to London.
- Toronto: about 68 km, 50–75 minutes to downtown depending on the QEW and the Gardiner; see Hamilton to downtown Toronto.
For a Toronto or Waterloo ceremony, an 8-hour booking in an executive SUV is a planning figure of about $1,520–1,880, and nobody has to drive the 403 home after a celebration dinner.

Grandparents and relatives flying in
Many convocation families include someone arriving by air, often from abroad. The chauffeur tracks the flight and waits at the terminal's commercial pickup area; the fare includes 30 minutes of waiting after domestic and US flights and 60 minutes after other international arrivals, counted from actual landing. Meeting inside arrivals with a name board is an optional add-on, planning figure $25–35, and worth it for grandparents travelling alone.
Toronto Pearson is about 70 km and 45–65 minutes from downtown Hamilton; Hamilton airport YHM in Mount Hope is about 15 km and 20–25 minutes. For the full arrival plan, including car seats and multi-stop days, read our family arrivals and reunions page. Flights and hotels for the visiting family can be arranged through the travel desk.
Walkers, long walks and older relatives
Convocation venues often involve long corridors, stairs and crowds. The chauffeur drops older relatives as close to the entrance as campus rules allow, folds and stows a walker or transport wheelchair in the trunk, and helps passengers in and out of the vehicle. Our own vehicles are not ramp-equipped; passengers who cannot transfer to a seat need a specialist accessible transportation provider, and dispatch will say so honestly when you ask. Universities usually publish accessibility contacts for convocation; request accessible seating directly with the institution.
Gowns, flowers and the photo list
Gowns and hoods are usually rented or collected on campus on the day, which means the graduate may need to arrive well before the family. A two-stage morning (graduate first, family second) is easy with an hourly booking and awkward with any other kind.
Pack the car with what the day needs: flowers in water, a small umbrella, comfortable shoes to change into after the photographs, snacks for the long ceremony, and a phone charger. Write the photo list before the day: graduate alone, with parents, with grandparents, with friends, with the diploma. Families who do this leave campus 30 minutes earlier and are relaxed at lunch.
Photo stops after the ceremony
Popular backdrops within a short drive of McMaster are the campus itself, the Royal Botanical Gardens and its trails around Cootes Paradise, Gage Park in the east end, and the Mountain brow lookouts with the lower city behind. Dundas Peak is spectacular but involves a walk and seasonal parking controls from the Conservation Authority, which is not ideal for grandparents in dress shoes.
Keep the photo stop to 30–45 minutes if lunch is booked; restaurants hold tables for a large family only so long on a convocation weekend.
Lunch and dinner after the ceremony
Book the restaurant as soon as the ceremony date is published; places in Westdale Village, on Locke Street, on James Street North and in Ancaster and Dundas fill up with graduating families on the same days. Tell the restaurant you are coming by car service so they know you will not be late looking for parking.
The chauffeur waits during the meal and takes everyone on afterwards: back to a hotel, to a family home in Stoney Creek or Waterdown, or to the airport for a relative's evening flight. See James Street North and Locke Street for the lower-city dining streets.
A sample convocation day, with distances and times
- 9:30 a.m. Chauffeur collects the graduate in Westdale for gown pickup on campus (under 5 km, 10 minutes).
- 10:00 a.m. Collect parents and grandmother at a downtown hotel (about 5 km, 15 minutes with campus traffic).
- 10:30 a.m. Drop at the ceremony venue; chauffeur holds the car nearby.
- 1:15 p.m. Ceremony ends; photographs on campus.
- 2:00 p.m. Drive to lunch in Ancaster (about 10 km, 15–20 minutes via the 403 and Mohawk Road).
- 4:00 p.m. Grandmother to Pearson for an evening flight (about 65 km from Ancaster, 45–60 minutes), family back to the hotel.
That is about 8 hours in an executive SUV, a planning figure of roughly $1,520–1,880 all-in plus HST; the Pearson leg is inside the hourly booking, so there is no separate transfer fare.
Two graduates, two ceremonies
Twins, siblings a year apart, or a parent and child graduating in the same season: families sometimes have two ceremonies on the same day or weekend, at different institutions. Two vehicles booked by the hour, one per ceremony, keep both halves of the family on time, and dispatch coordinates them so the groups meet for dinner. Book both on the same reservation so one confirmation shows the whole day.
Moving out after graduation
Graduation is often also moving day. A business sedan carries 3 passengers and about 3 suitcases; a luxury van or executive SUV about 6 and 6; a Sprinter 14 passengers and 14 bags. We carry luggage, boxes and a desk lamp; we are not a moving company and cannot take furniture. A Sprinter booked for three hours, with the family riding along, often replaces a rented van and a stressful drive to Toronto, Ottawa or the airport.

International students' families
International students often have family arriving for convocation after a long flight, sometimes their first visit to Canada. The chauffeur meets them, carries bags, and drives the airport-hotel-campus-restaurant loop so the graduate can concentrate on the day. For documents, visitors should check the Government of Canada eTA page and their own visa requirements before booking flights. Families who fly home from Buffalo or Toronto can book the return transfer in the same reservation.
Booking lead time and cancellation
Book as soon as ceremony dates and times are published, and no later than three to four weeks before; SUVs, vans and Sprinters are the first to go on McMaster's busiest convocation days. Add the ceremony time, the graduate's name, the pickup addresses and any flight numbers in the booking notes. The engine shows the fixed all-in price with HST separate before you confirm, and you book direct on HamiltonLimo.net with no app and no marketplace commission.
Cancellation is measured from scheduled pickup: more than 72 hours before, no charge; 72 hours or less, 10 %; 48 hours or less, 50 %; 24 hours or less or a no-show, 100 %. If the university changes a ceremony time, tell dispatch at once and the booking will be moved to fit.
