McMaster convocation ceremonies in 2026 are held at FirstOntario Concert Hall, 1 Summers Lane in downtown Hamilton, about 5 km from campus. Doors open 90 minutes before each ceremony, graduands arrive an hour early, and ceremonies run about two hours. Parking is limited; the university points guests to nearby garages. A chauffeured sedan for 4 hours is $480–580.
Families planning the whole celebration, including relatives flying in and ceremonies at other schools, should also read our graduation and convocation car service page. This post focuses on one question: how a McMaster convocation day actually runs in 2026, and how to get everyone there, through it and on to lunch without a parking headache.
McMaster convocation: where it happens now
The most important fact for families: McMaster's 2026 ceremonies are downtown, not on campus. According to the McMaster convocation page, all faculty ceremonies take place at FirstOntario Concert Hall, 1 Summers Lane, next to Hamilton City Hall. The main public entrance is on Main Street West. The venue's own details are on the FirstOntario Concert Hall site.
That matters for planning. The campus in Westdale is about 5 km and 10–15 minutes away. Families who arrive at the university by habit lose half an hour. Photos on campus, at the Arts Quad or University Hall, are a separate trip before or after the ceremony.
Fall 2026 ceremony dates and times
The university lists these fall 2026 ceremonies:
- Wednesday, 18 November, 2:30 p.m. DeGroote School of Business, Humanities, Social Sciences.
- Thursday, 19 November, 9:30 a.m. Health Sciences.
- Thursday, 19 November, 2:30 p.m. Engineering and Science.
Spring ceremonies ran from late May to mid-June in 2026, faculty by faculty, with several on some days. Always confirm your graduand's own ceremony on the university page; times occasionally change.
Timing the day: doors, arrival and length
McMaster's published guidance for 2026: doors open 1.5 hours before a ceremony, graduands should arrive one hour before, and ceremonies last about two hours. For a 2:30 p.m. ceremony that means:
- 1:00 p.m. Doors open for guests.
- 1:30 p.m. Graduand arrival deadline.
- 2:30 p.m. Ceremony begins.
- About 4:30 p.m. Ceremony ends; photos and hugs in the lobby and outside.
- About 5:30 p.m. Regalia returned (the university asks for gowns back within an hour of the ceremony).
Plan the car around those times, not around "about lunchtime".
Tickets: two per graduate
Each graduate receives two guaranteed guest tickets, and guests without tickets are not admitted. Extra tickets may become available but are not guaranteed. For families with more than two people coming, decide early who goes in. Everyone else can watch the livestream, which McMaster provides for each ceremony, from a hotel room, a restaurant's private room or home, and meet the graduate afterwards.
This two-ticket rule is also why many families book a car: the two guests in the hall and the rest of the family arrive at different times and places, and one vehicle on an hourly booking can shuttle between them.
Parking at FirstOntario Concert Hall
McMaster notes that parking at the venue is limited and recommends university-designated areas nearby, including the 10 Bay underground lot and 100 Main Street West, with paid city parking also available at the concert hall. With a whole faculty of graduands and their guests arriving within the same hour, the closest spaces go early.
Downtown traffic around City Hall, Main Street and Bay Street also slows as each ceremony lets out. If you drive, arrive when the doors open, not at the start time.

Drop-off without the parking hunt
A chauffeured car simply drops the graduand and guests at the Main Street entrance area and moves on. The chauffeur then waits nearby and returns when you text. For families with grandparents, that means a door-to-door arrival instead of a walk from a garage in November weather. Our hourly chauffeur service is designed for exactly this kind of stop-start day.
The concert hall's accessibility services include attendant-propelled wheelchairs, infrared hearing devices, captioning and mobility assistance; McMaster asks for additional accommodation requests by email ahead of the ceremony (7 November for fall 2026). Our fleet has no ramp vehicles, but chauffeurs fold and stow walkers and transfer wheelchairs.
Gowns, pockets and what to carry
Bachelor's graduates receive a gown and hood; master's and PhD graduates also receive a cap. McMaster's note that gowns do not have pockets is worth taking seriously: phones, keys and wallets need a home. A guest can carry them, or they can stay locked in the car with the chauffeur. Flowers, balloons and gift bags are best left in the vehicle during the ceremony and handed over outside.
Photos: campus before, or downtown after?
Two good approaches:
- Campus first. Morning photos on campus in Westdale (University Hall, the Arts Quad, the sign at the main entrance), then the 10–15 minute drive downtown in time for the 1:30 p.m. arrival. Works well for afternoon ceremonies.
- Downtown after. Photos outside City Hall and in the nearby parks straight after the ceremony, while the gowns are still on. Remember the one-hour regalia return.
Many families do both: a quick campus stop the day before in casual clothes, and the formal shots on the day.
Where to eat after
The venue sits between James Street North, Hess Village and Locke Street, all within a few minutes' drive. Book a table for 30–45 minutes after the ceremony's expected end; convocation days fill restaurants near downtown fast, especially on Friday evenings in June. Westdale, near campus, is 10–15 minutes away.

A timeline for a 9:30 a.m. ceremony
- 7:15 a.m. Pickup at a hotel in Burlington or on the Mountain.
- 7:45 a.m. Drop at the concert hall; graduand heads in by 8:30.
- 8:00 a.m. Guests have coffee nearby; doors open.
- 9:30 a.m. Ceremony.
- About 11:30 a.m. Photos outside City Hall.
- 12:30 p.m. Gown returned; lunch on James Street North.
- 2:00 p.m. Campus photo stop in Westdale, 10–15 minutes away.
- 3:00 p.m. Back to the hotel.
That is about eight hours in an executive SUV, a planning range of $1,520–1,880.

November weather and early mornings
Fall convocation falls in mid-November, when Hamilton can see its first snow, and a 9:30 a.m. ceremony means leaving in the dark and in rush hour. Chauffeurs check Ontario 511 and leave early from the Mountain, where the Claremont Access and the Jolley Cut slow down first in bad weather.
Relatives flying or training in
Out-of-town family usually arrives the day before. Hamilton airport (YHM) is 15 km and 20–25 minutes from downtown; Toronto Pearson is about 70 km and 45–65 minutes. VIA and GO trains arrive at Aldershot or the Hamilton GO Centre, which is a few minutes from the concert hall. Our Pearson airport to McMaster University post and hotels near McMaster University cover the arrival and where to stay; for a downtown base, see downtown Hamilton hotels.
Booking and cancellation
Convocation weeks book up with the same families, so reserve once the ceremony time is confirmed. Cancellation is free more than 72 hours before pickup; 10 % at 72 hours or less, 50 % at 48 hours or less, and 100 % at 24 hours or less. Book on HamiltonLimo.net's own reservation engine and you see the fixed all-in fare before you confirm, with no app and no aggregator. Mohawk College families should check our university and campus visits page too.
If you are the graduate, not the family
Graduates juggle their own logistics: collecting and returning regalia, arriving an hour early, and finding the family afterwards in a crowded lobby. Two tips from chauffeurs who have waited outside many ceremonies. First, agree one meeting landmark outside the hall before you go in, because phones are hard to reach in a pocketless gown. Second, give the chauffeur your number as well as your parents'; if the family is stuck in the crowd, the chauffeur can collect you first.
Watching the livestream together
With two tickets per graduate, many families split: parents in the hall, grandparents and siblings watching the livestream. A hotel meeting room, a restaurant's private room or a relative's living room works. The car then collects the two ticket-holders and the graduate at the end and brings them to the watchers for the celebration. Plan the livestream location close to downtown to keep that final drive short.
Graduation weeks and downtown events
Convocation days share downtown Hamilton with everything else: TD Coliseum events a few blocks away on York Boulevard, conventions at the Hamilton Convention Centre beside the concert hall, and ordinary rush hour. On a weekday, the 9:30 a.m. ceremonies meet morning traffic and the 4:00 p.m. ceremonies in spring meet the evening rush. Leave earlier than you think.
Gifts, flowers and a car that waits
Flowers wilt in a hot car and balloons do not fit well in a sedan. Keep gifts simple and let the chauffeur hold them. If a celebration dinner is planned for the evening, a single hourly booking from the morning pickup to the end of dinner often costs less than a morning drop-off, an afternoon pickup and a separate evening ride, and nobody drives after the toast.
Accessibility on the day
If a guest uses a wheelchair or needs help with a long walk, contact McMaster about accommodations before its deadline, and tell dispatch when you book. The chauffeur will drop the guest as close to an accessible entrance as traffic staff allow and wait until they are inside.
A quick checklist for convocation day
- Confirm the ceremony time and your two tickets.
- Agree the meeting landmark outside the concert hall.
- Plan where phones and wallets will live during the ceremony.
- Book lunch or dinner for after, with 30–45 minutes of slack.
- Leave extra time on a November or rush-hour morning.
