Pearson to McMaster University is about 70 km, mostly on Highway 403, and takes 45-65 minutes by car. Transit is cheaper but needs a GO bus plus a transfer, and takes considerably longer with luggage. A pre-booked HamiltonLimo.net sedan is $245-300 all-in plus HST for up to three students, door to residence, with the flight tracked.
Pearson to McMaster University: your three real options
Most new students search "Pearson to McMaster" a few weeks before term, usually with an arrival time already booked. You have three sensible choices: GO Transit with a transfer, a taxi or rideshare from the airport rank, or a pre-booked private car. Our page on university and campus visit transportation covers family tour days and move-in logistics; this guide is written for the student travelling alone or with a friend, often on a budget, often for the first time in Canada.
The short answer: transit wins on price if you travel light and land in daylight. A pre-booked car wins if you land late, carry more than two cases, or share with other students.
The route by car: 403 all the way to Westdale
McMaster sits in Westdale in west Hamilton, on Main Street West near Cootes Drive. From Pearson, a car takes Highway 427 or 401 to the 403, follows the 403 through Mississauga, Oakville and Burlington, and leaves it at the Main Street West exit near campus. The 407 ETR is sometimes faster at rush hour; if the chauffeur uses it, the toll is inside the fare.
Typical door-to-door times from Pearson to a McMaster residence:
- Late evening or early morning: about 45 minutes.
- Midday weekday: 50-55 minutes.
- Weekday afternoon rush: 60-75 minutes, with the 403 at Oakville and Burlington the slow section.
Getting there by GO Transit
GO route 40 runs between Pearson Terminal 1 and Hamilton GO Centre downtown, and our GO bus vs limo guide lists its stops. McMaster also has an on-campus GO bus terminal, served by other GO routes. There is no single route we can recommend as "the" direct bus from Pearson to campus, because connections change with the timetable. The dependable approach is to enter your flight's arrival time and "McMaster University" into the trip planner on GO Transit a few days before you fly and again on the day.
Whatever the planner shows, expect at least one transfer, time spent waiting, and every bag handled by you. If your connection lands you downtown, the Hamilton Street Railway runs frequent buses west along Main Street to the university.
Costs compared for a student
| Option | Distance and time | Cost | Luggage |
|---|---|---|---|
| GO bus plus transfer | about 70 km; allow well over an hour plus waits | Per-person transit fares; check gotransit.com | You carry everything |
| Taxi or rideshare from the rank | about 70 km, 45-65 min | Varies with demand and traffic | Driver may help; no fixed price |
| HamiltonLimo.net business sedan | about 70 km, 45-65 min | $245-300 all-in + HST per car | 3 passengers, 3 large bags |
| HamiltonLimo.net business SUV | about 70 km, 45-65 min | about $320-390 all-in + HST | 5 passengers, 5 bags |
| HamiltonLimo.net executive SUV | about 70 km, 45-65 min | about $405-495 all-in + HST | 6 passengers, 6 bags |
The car fare is per vehicle, not per student. Three students sharing a sedan pay about $80-100 each, which is why group chats in September fill with "anyone landing at Pearson on Tuesday?"
Sharing a car with other McMaster students
If you find two classmates on the same arrival day, one sedan carries three of you and three large bags. Four or five students with luggage need an executive SUV or luxury van. The engine takes one pickup and can add a second drop-off if not everyone lives in the same residence; each extra stop is priced before you confirm. Agree who books and pays, and share the confirmation so everyone has the chauffeur's details. Flights must land close together for this to work: the included waiting covers one flight, and a long gap between two arrivals is better handled as two cars or an hourly booking.

Your arrival, step by step
- Land and clear the border. International students go through Canadian immigration first. IRCC explains which documents to carry for a study permit; keep them in your hand luggage, not in a checked bag.
- Collect your bags. International arrivals include 60 minutes of free waiting from actual landing, counted automatically because we track your flight.
- Connect to Wi-Fi. Pearson has free Wi-Fi; send the chauffeur a message once you have your bags.
- Walk to the curb. Pickup is at the terminal's commercial pickup area; the chauffeur texts the car's colour, plate and position.
- Drive to campus. 45-65 minutes to Westdale, with the chauffeur carrying bags to the residence entrance.
Meet and greet inside arrivals, with a name board, is a $25-35 add-on for students who would rather be met in the hall.
Landing late at night
A lot of international flights reach Pearson in the evening, and residence front desks keep their own hours. Before you fly, check with McMaster's housing office when and where you can collect keys, and what happens if you arrive after hours. If you cannot check in until morning, book a room for the first night. Our post on hotels near McMaster University and the downtown Hamilton hotels page list options within a few minutes of campus. The fixed fare is the same at midnight as at noon, and the chauffeur can drop you at the hotel one night and take you to residence the next morning.
What to pack in the car bag
Keep these with you, not in the trunk: passport and study documents, your offer or admission letter, phone and charger, a pen, some Canadian cash or a card that works here, medication, and one change of clothes. If a checked bag goes missing at Pearson, report it to your airline before you leave the baggage hall; the chauffeur will wait while you file the report, and your included waiting time helps cover it.
First week errands with a car
The first week has errands a bus does badly: a bank appointment, a phone store, bedding and a kettle from a big-box store, groceries for a shared kitchen. Some parents book an hourly chauffeur for their student's first Saturday. A business sedan is $120-145 per hour with a 3-hour minimum, all-in plus HST, so three hours is about $360-435. The car waits outside each store, and heavy bags ride back to residence in the trunk.
Parents booking from overseas
Many arrivals are booked by a parent in another time zone. That works well on our own reservation engine: the parent enters the student's flight number and mobile number, pays, and receives the confirmation. Tell us in the notes if the student speaks limited English, and dispatch will keep messages short and clear. After drop-off, dispatch can confirm by message that the student reached the residence door. For whole-family visits later in the year, see graduation and convocation transportation.
Flying into Hamilton airport instead
Some students can fly into John C. Munro Hamilton International Airport (YHM), which puts McMaster about 20-30 minutes away and roughly $90-115 by sedan. Check current routes on flyhamilton.ca, since airlines and destinations change by season. For most international students, Pearson is still the arrival airport, and a domestic connection into Hamilton only makes sense if the airline offers it at a sensible time.
Mohawk, Redeemer and Brock students
The same planning applies to other campuses near Hamilton. Mohawk College's Fennell Campus is on the Mountain, a few minutes further from Pearson than McMaster. Redeemer University is in Ancaster, reached from the 403 at the Ancaster exits. Brock University students often land at Pearson too; St. Catharines is further along the QEW, and our St. Catharines page lists that fare. Tell the engine the exact residence or building name, not only the institution.
Going home at the end of term
In April and December the direction flips. Exams end, residences close, and everyone heads to Pearson at once. Book as soon as the exam schedule is out, and share with friends on the same flight day. Our Hamilton to Pearson limo page explains how early to leave for a morning departure, and the GO bus luggage post covers the transit option with heavy bags.

Arriving in September: move-in week traffic
The Labour Day weekend and the days around it are the busiest of the year on the 403 into west Hamilton. Families from across Ontario drive in at the same time, residence move-in slots bunch arrivals together, and Main Street West near Cootes Drive slows to a crawl by late morning. If your flight lands on a move-in day, give the engine your residence name and your time slot in the notes. The chauffeur will plan for the congestion near campus and use the closest drop-off point that residence staff are directing cars to. Allow an extra 15-20 minutes on the final few kilometres.
Winter-term arrivals in January
Students starting in January face a different road. Lake-effect snow can slow the QEW and 403 between Oakville and Burlington, and an evening landing in a storm is a poor time to learn Canadian winter at a bus stop. Pack a warm coat in your hand luggage, not in the checked bag. Our cars run winter tires, the chauffeur checks Ontario 511 before leaving for the airport, and the included 60 minutes of waiting on international flights still starts only at actual landing.
Mistakes new students make
- Booking a car for the scheduled time, not the flight. Always give the flight number so the pickup follows the aircraft.
- Packing documents in checked bags. Immigration needs them before baggage claim.
- Assuming the residence is open at midnight. Check first.
- Underestimating luggage. Two cases plus a large backpack is already a full sedan for one student sharing with two others.
- Forgetting the return trip. End-of-term Pearson mornings are busy; book early.
How to book direct
Open the reservation engine from any page or our booking page. Enter Pearson and your flight number as the pickup, the residence or hotel as the drop-off, the number of students and bags, and any add-ons. You see the fixed all-in fare with HST shown separately before you pay. No app, no marketplace commission, one dispatch desk. Visit McMaster University for campus maps and residence information before you travel.
