Check Peace Bridge wait times live on peacebridge.com (lane status and cameras) and on the US CBP border wait times page, which lists Peace Bridge, Lewiston-Queenston and Rainbow Bridge together. Waits spike on summer Fridays, Sunday evenings, long weekends on either side of the border and March Break. From Hamilton, the Peace Bridge is the shorter route to Buffalo airport; Lewiston-Queenston wins when the Peace Bridge queue is longer. A Buffalo airport car is $375–465 by sedan.
Peace Bridge wait times: where to check them
Three official sources cover the crossings between Niagara and Buffalo:
- The Peace Bridge site, run by the bridge authority, shows current traffic conditions for its own crossing, including lanes open, and links to traffic cameras and mobile wait times. When we looked on 30 September 2026 it was showing "No Delay" with lanes open counts for cars.
- US Customs and Border Protection wait times list US-bound waits at each port of entry, including the Peace Bridge, Lewiston Bridge and Rainbow Bridge, for passenger, NEXUS/SENTRI-type and commercial lanes.
- CBSA's border wait times list Canada-bound waits, which matter on the way home.
The Niagara Falls Bridge Commission posts information for the Lewiston-Queenston, Rainbow and Whirlpool bridges. Wait figures are estimates that change quickly, so check shortly before the crossing, not the night before. For a Buffalo airport run, that is exactly what our chauffeur does from the QEW; our parent page on Buffalo airport explains the rest of the trip.
The two sensible crossings for BUF
| Peace Bridge (Fort Erie – Buffalo) | Lewiston-Queenston Bridge | |
|---|---|---|
| Reached from Hamilton via | QEW south past Niagara Falls to Fort Erie | QEW, then Highway 405 at Queenston |
| US side to BUF | I-190 and the Kensington Expressway area east | I-190 south across Grand Island, then east |
| Best when | Its queue is short; shortest line to the airport | Peace Bridge is backed up |
| Hamilton to BUF overall | about 105 km, 80–110 min with a normal wait | similar, often quicker on busy days |
The Rainbow Bridge, in the centre of Niagara Falls, mainly serves traffic heading into Niagara Falls itself and is rarely the best choice for the airport. Our sibling post comparing the Peace Bridge and Lewiston-Queenston Bridge looks at the two for general travel; here we stay with airport timing.
When Peace Bridge wait times spike
The pattern is predictable even if the exact minutes are not:
- Summer Friday afternoons, US-bound, and Sunday evenings, Canada-bound.
- Long weekends on either side: Victoria Day, Canada Day, Memorial Day, Independence Day, Labour Day and both Thanksgivings. US Thanksgiving in late November is heavy.
- March Break, when Ontario families head for US airports and Florida.
- Buffalo event days: Bills home games load the highways around Buffalo.
- Construction on either approach, which both bridge operators announce on their sites.
Weekday early mornings are usually the quietest window, which is one reason early flights from Buffalo appeal to Hamilton travellers.

How our chauffeur chooses the bridge
Nothing is fixed at booking. The chauffeur leaves Hamilton on the QEW, and somewhere around St. Catharines checks the live figures for both crossings. The Peace Bridge is the shorter route to the airport, so it wins when queues are similar. A clear gap flips the choice: a 40-minute wait at Fort Erie against 10 minutes at Lewiston makes Lewiston faster door to door. Construction, an accident on the QEW toward Fort Erie or a Bills game near Orchard Park can also tip it. You do not have to decide anything, and the fare stays the same whichever bridge is used.
Tolls: which way you pay
The Peace Bridge site states that tolls are collected Canada-bound only, and that E-ZPass holders save on the toll. For HamiltonLimo.net passengers, bridge tolls are inside the fixed all-in fare, so there is nothing to pay at the booth in either direction. If you drive yourself, check each bridge operator's site for current toll rates and payment methods.
NEXUS lanes and wait times
NEXUS lanes can be much shorter than general lanes at busy times, and both the CBP and CBSA wait pages show them separately. The rule that matters in a car is simple: every person in the vehicle, including the chauffeur, must be a NEXUS member for the car to use the NEXUS lane. Our post on using NEXUS in a chauffeured car explains how that works on a booking. Information on the program itself is on the NEXUS page.
Reading the wait numbers sensibly
A posted wait is an estimate of how long a car joining the queue now will take to reach the booth. It is not a promise, and it lags behind reality when traffic changes quickly. Three habits help. First, look at the trend: a wait that has grown in the last half hour will probably keep growing. Second, compare both bridges at the same moment, because a queue that looks long may still be shorter than the alternative. Third, remember the drive to each bridge: from St. Catharines, Lewiston-Queenston is closer than the Peace Bridge, so a similar wait usually favours Lewiston on distance, while the Peace Bridge is closer to the airport once you are across. The chauffeur weighs all three.
Traffic cameras and the view from the QEW
Both bridge operators provide traffic camera views, and the Peace Bridge site links to cameras and mobile wait times from its home page. Cameras are useful for a quick sanity check: a queue backed up onto the approach roads is obvious at a glance. On the Ontario side, Ontario 511 shows incidents and closures on the QEW toward Fort Erie and Highway 405 toward Queenston. For our chauffeurs, the combination of posted waits, cameras and 511 incidents is enough to choose confidently. For a traveller at home, it is enough to know whether to expect an earlier pickup message from dispatch.
Returning visitors: Canada-bound from Buffalo to Hamilton
American visitors and Canadians flying home into Buffalo face the Canada-bound queue, which is where the Peace Bridge collects its toll and where CBSA officers ask about purchases. Sunday afternoons and the last day of any long weekend are the busiest. If you are landing in Buffalo on a Sunday evening in summer, expect the chauffeur to pick the crossing on the US side using the same live figures. Our page on Buffalo to Hamilton covers the inbound trip for visitors.
Planning the pickup around the queue
Dispatch sets your pickup time from your flight and the calendar:
| Day and time | Typical approach | Extra buffer we add |
|---|---|---|
| Weekday before 7 a.m. | Queues usually short | Standard timing |
| Weekday midday | Moderate | Standard timing |
| Summer Friday afternoon | US-bound queues build | 45–60 min |
| Canadian or US long weekend | Heavy both ways | 45–60 min |
| March Break week | Heavy US-bound on departure days | 45–60 min |
| Storm day on the Niagara Frontier | Slow roads either side | Pickup moved earlier, message the evening before |
For a normal weekday flight we plan to leave about 2 hours 15 minutes before your airline's recommended arrival time at BUF.
Coming home: Canada-bound waits
Canada-bound queues peak on Sunday afternoons and evenings and at the end of long weekends. That is the direction where tolls are collected at the Peace Bridge, and where you declare purchases to CBSA. Keep passports and receipts in hand. With a booked car, the waiting clock for your arrival at BUF starts at actual landing and includes 30 minutes on US domestic flights; the time spent at the bridge afterwards is inside the fixed fare. Our post on duty-free limits after a Niagara wine trip covers declaration habits.

What the wait means for the whole trip
A normal border wait is already inside our 80–110 minute estimate from downtown Hamilton to BUF, and inside the fare. What a spike changes is the pickup time. That is why the confirmation for a Friday in July shows an earlier time than the same flight on a Tuesday in October. Trust it; the minutes get used at the booth. For a visual on which days are busiest, the CBP page lets you see the current picture at each crossing.
Three examples from the QEW
A Tuesday in October, 6 a.m. Both bridges show little or no delay. The chauffeur stays on the QEW to Fort Erie and the Peace Bridge, the shortest line to the airport, and the family is at the BUF curb well inside the 80–110 minute estimate.
A Friday in July, 2 p.m. The Peace Bridge shows a long US-bound queue; Lewiston-Queenston is shorter. At St. Catharines the chauffeur turns onto Highway 405 toward Queenston instead. The pickup had already been set 45 minutes earlier on the confirmation because of the date.
The Sunday of a long weekend, coming home. Canada-bound queues build everywhere. The chauffeur checks the CBSA figures from the US side after collecting you at BUF and chooses the crossing with the shorter wait; you keep passports and receipts ready for the booth.
In each case the fixed fare does not change. The only thing that moves is the pickup time on your confirmation, which dispatch sets from the date, the flight and what the bridges usually do that day, and adjusts with a message the evening before if the forecast or a construction notice changes the picture.
Also heading to Niagara Falls NY airport?
For Niagara Falls International (IAG), the Lewiston-Queenston Bridge is usually the most direct crossing, with the Rainbow Bridge as the alternative when Queenston is backed up. See our post on Niagara Falls NY airport from Hamilton. Travellers staying overnight in Niagara before an early flight can compare lobbies on our Niagara Falls hotels page, and pickups from Fort Erie are only minutes from the Peace Bridge.
Hourly: when the day includes the US side
If your cross-border day has several stops, such as an outlet trip, lunch and a Buffalo appointment, an hourly chauffeur keeps one car and chauffeur with you: $120–145 per hour by business sedan, 3-hour minimum, all-in plus HST, with bridge tolls added to the quote. The chauffeur handles the bridge choice both ways.
Book direct
On the booking page, choose BUF or IAG, add your flight number and passenger count, and see the fixed all-in fare with tolls included and HST shown separately. No app, no aggregator commission. Cancellation is free more than 72 hours before pickup; 10 % inside 72 hours, 50 % inside 48 and 100 % inside 24 hours or for a no-show.
