To get from Hamilton to Buffalo airport, most travellers go by car: about 105 km and 80–110 minutes via the QEW and the Peace Bridge or Lewiston-Queenston Bridge, with passports for everyone. A pre-booked Buffalo airport car is $375–465 by business sedan, all-in plus HST, door to terminal. Alternatives are driving and parking yourself, or train and bus connections with transfers. Book the car for the time dispatch sets from your flight.
Hamilton to Buffalo: the four ways to reach BUF
There is no direct public shuttle that we know of from Hamilton to Buffalo Niagara International, so the options come down to four. The table compares them honestly; our parent page on the Buffalo airport limo covers the terminal and the border in depth.
| Option | Time | Cost basis | Luggage | Border |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Pre-booked private car | 80–110 min, about 105 km | $375–465 sedan, $620–765 SUV, all-in + HST | Vehicle chosen for bags | In the car, chauffeur experienced |
| Drive yourself, park at BUF | 80–110 min plus parking shuttle | Fuel, bridge toll, BUF parking for the trip | Your own car | You drive through |
| Friend or family drops you | 80–110 min each way for them | Their time, fuel, two border crossings | Their car | Twice for them |
| Train or coach plus local transport | Several hours with transfers | Tickets plus local connection | Carry what you can | At the border on board |
The Amtrak and VIA Maple Leaf between Toronto and New York calls at Aldershot and Grimsby and crosses into New York State; check Amtrak for current stops and times. Intercity coaches such as Megabus and FlixBus run cross-border services; confirm stops before you plan around them. For an early flight with luggage, neither is practical.
Step 1: the night before
- Documents in hand. Every traveller needs their own document for a US land entry and one the airline accepts. For Canadian citizens, a passport covers both. Children need their own; a child travelling with one parent should carry a consent letter from the other.
- Check the flight and terminal details on the Buffalo airport site.
- Confirm your pickup time. Dispatch sets it from your flight and the day's border pattern and messages you the evening before.
- Pack declarations sensibly. Receipts in one pocket for the trip home; no fresh fruit or meat in the car.
Step 2: pickup in Hamilton
The chauffeur arrives about 10 minutes before the booked time, loads the bags and checks the passenger count against the booking, because the officer will count too. Child seats, if added at booking (planning figure $10–15 each), are already installed. From downtown the car reaches the QEW via Burlington Street and the Red Hill Valley Parkway, or at Centennial Parkway in Stoney Creek; from the Mountain it comes down the Linc and the Red Hill.

Step 3: the QEW through Niagara
The QEW runs east along the lake through Grimsby, Beamsville and Vineland, then over the Welland Canal at St. Catharines. Around there the chauffeur checks posted waits on the Peace Bridge and the Niagara Falls Bridge Commission sites and the CBP wait times, then decides. The Peace Bridge at Fort Erie is the shorter line to the airport; the Lewiston-Queenston Bridge via Highway 405 is often faster when the Peace Bridge is busy. You do not choose, and the fare does not change with the bridge.
Step 4: the US booth
Have passports out, not in a bag in the trunk. The officer usually speaks to everyone through the windows, asks where you are going and for how long, and may ask about anything you are carrying. Answer for yourself; the chauffeur answers for the vehicle. Occasionally a car is sent to secondary inspection, and our timing includes a buffer for it. Our guide to crossing the border by limo covers the procedure in detail, and using NEXUS in a chauffeured car explains when a NEXUS lane can and cannot be used.
Step 5: the last 20–30 minutes
After the Peace Bridge the route runs onto I-190 and the Kensington Expressway toward Cheektowaga, where the airport sits. After Lewiston it is I-190 south over Grand Island, then east. Both end at BUF's upper-level departures curb in front of your airline. The chauffeur unloads; you walk straight to check-in and TSA security. Because you have already cleared US customs at the bridge, a US domestic flight has no customs at the other end.
Step 6: the ride home
Book the return with the outbound, using the return flight number. The flight is tracked from departure, so a delay in Florida simply moves the chauffeur. Included waiting starts at actual landing: 30 minutes on US domestic flights, then 15-minute blocks. The fare includes curbside pickup at the commercial pickup area on BUF's baggage-claim level; message the chauffeur when you have your bags. Meet & greet inside baggage claim with a name board is an add-on at a planning figure of $25–35. At the Canadian booth, declare what you bought; CBSA sets the limits.
Timing: when to leave Hamilton
Our rule for a US domestic departure on a normal weekday is to leave about 2 hours 15 minutes before your airline's recommended arrival time at BUF. Add 45–60 minutes on summer Friday afternoons, over Canadian and US long weekends, at March Break and around American Thanksgiving. For a 7:00 a.m. flight, that usually means a pickup between 3:15 and 3:30 a.m. from downtown. It is early, which is exactly why a booked car confirmed the evening before is worth more than an app request at 3 a.m.

Families, snowbirds and sports teams
Most BUF trips from Hamilton are holidays. A family of five with car seats fits an executive SUV; grandparents find the luxury van easier to step into; a minor hockey team heading to a US tournament travels in one Sprinter with one set of border questions, helped by a manager with a printed list of names and dates of birth. Our own fleet has no ramp vehicles; we fold and stow manual chairs and walkers for passengers who can transfer to a seat.
Hamilton to Buffalo for the day, not the airport
The same search often means Buffalo itself: a Bills game in Orchard Park, shopping, a hospital appointment, or meetings in Amherst. An hourly chauffeur keeps one car and chauffeur with you across the border for the day: a business sedan is $120–145 per hour, 3-hour minimum, all-in plus HST, with bridge tolls added to the quote. A 4-hour booking is $480–580 before tolls. Our cross-border limo service page covers longer US days.
Driving yourself: what to plan
Some travellers prefer to drive their own car and park at BUF. It works, but add up the whole trip: fuel for about 210 km round trip, the bridge toll (the Peace Bridge collects tolls Canada-bound only, according to its website), airport parking for the length of your stay at the rates on the Buffalo airport site, and the drive home after the return flight, often late in the evening and after a long travel day. You also cross the border twice with your own vehicle, so make sure your insurance covers driving in the US. For a couple on a two-week trip, driving yourself usually costs less than a booked car both ways even once parking is counted; what the car buys is that nobody has to drive at midnight.
Documents for other nationalities and permanent residents
Canadian citizens have the simplest path: a passport covers the land entry and the flight. Permanent residents of Canada, visitors and dual nationals should check the US rules for a land entry with their own documents on the CBP website well before the trip, and the rules for returning to Canada on CBSA's site. Visitors from outside North America who flew into Canada should also check whether they need anything extra to re-enter Canada by land. Our chauffeurs cannot vouch for anyone at the booth; each person answers for themselves, which is why this check happens at home, not on the bridge.
Mistakes we see on BUF runs
- One passenger without a document. The whole car waits or turns back.
- Passports in the checked bag. Open the trunk on the bridge and the queue behind you notices.
- Forgetting the return booking. A midnight landing in Buffalo is a poor time to arrange a 105 km ride.
- Planning a holiday Friday like a Tuesday. Trust the earlier pickup time on your confirmation.
Hamilton to Buffalo checklist
- Passport or accepted document for every traveller, in hand, not in the trunk.
- Consent letter for any child travelling without both parents.
- Flight numbers for both legs on the booking, and the passenger count.
- Child seats added at booking; bag count and any golf bags or sports gear listed.
- Pickup time from your confirmation, earlier on holiday weekends.
- No fresh fruit, meat or plants in the car for the crossing.
- Receipts together for the Canadian booth on the way home.
- Return pickup booked with the outbound, so the flight is tracked from departure.
Tick those off the evening before and the trip itself is simply a long, quiet drive.
