From Hamilton, the Lewiston-Queenston Bridge is usually the better choice for Buffalo airport, the northern suburbs, Niagara Falls NY and anything east toward Rochester; the Peace Bridge suits downtown Buffalo, the West Side, the Southtowns and I-90 west. The two are about 30 km apart. Queenston is roughly 70 km from downtown Hamilton, the Peace Bridge about 85 km. Live wait times decide close calls.
Lewiston-Queenston Bridge or Peace Bridge: the short answer
Choose by destination first, then by queue. The Lewiston-Queenston Bridge sits just south of Niagara-on-the-Lake and lands on I-190 in Lewiston, New York, north of Niagara Falls. The Peace Bridge joins Fort Erie to Buffalo's West Side, a few minutes from downtown. Everything else follows from those two landing points.
Our general crossing the border by limo guide covers documents, declarations and what happens at the booth. This post is narrower: a head-to-head of the two crossings Hamilton travellers use most, with the approach roads, the tolls, the duty-free stops and the judgement calls our chauffeurs make on the QEW.
How far each bridge is from Hamilton
Both bridges start from the same road: the QEW east from Hamilton through Stoney Creek, Grimsby, Beamsville and St. Catharines. The split comes after St. Catharines.
- To Lewiston-Queenston: leave the QEW for Highway 405 toward Queenston. About 70 km from downtown Hamilton, typically 45–55 minutes in normal traffic.
- To the Peace Bridge: stay on the QEW past Niagara Falls to its end at Fort Erie. About 85 km, typically 55–70 minutes.
So Queenston is the nearer bridge by roughly 15 km and a quarter of an hour. Whether that head start survives depends entirely on where you are going on the other side and how long each queue is.
Comparison table: the two crossings side by side
| Lewiston-Queenston Bridge | Peace Bridge | |
|---|---|---|
| Canadian side | Queenston, via Highway 405 | Fort Erie, at the end of the QEW |
| US side | Lewiston, joins I-190 | Buffalo West Side, joins I-190 and the Niagara Thruway |
| From downtown Hamilton | about 70 km, 45–55 min | about 85 km, 55–70 min |
| Operator | Niagara Falls Bridge Commission | Buffalo and Fort Erie Public Bridge Authority |
| Best for | BUF airport, Amherst, Niagara Falls NY, Lockport, Rochester | Downtown Buffalo, Elmwood, Southtowns, I-90 west |
| Duty-free | Tax & Duty Free Queenston Lewiston; Duty Free Americas | Peace Bridge Duty Free Canada; Duty Free Americas |
| Character | Heavy truck traffic, fewer tourists | Busiest crossing for cars on summer weekends |
Both are run by public bridge authorities that post current waits: the Niagara Falls Bridge Commission and the Peace Bridge authority.
Destination decides first
The quickest bridge on paper is the one that lands you nearest your destination. From the chauffeur's seat:
- Buffalo Niagara International Airport: usually Lewiston-Queenston, then I-190 south and I-290 east. The Peace Bridge route through the city is similar in distance but has more urban traffic.
- Downtown Buffalo, Canalside, the medical campus, KeyBank Center: the Peace Bridge, which lands a few minutes away.
- Elmwood Village and the West Side: the Peace Bridge.
- Amherst, Williamsville, the University at Buffalo north campus: Lewiston-Queenston.
- Orchard Park, Hamburg and the Southtowns: the Peace Bridge, then the Skyway or I-190 to I-90.
- Niagara Falls NY hotels and the State Park: the Rainbow Bridge, or Lewiston-Queenston when the Rainbow is busy.
- Rochester and the Thruway east: Lewiston-Queenston, then I-190 and I-290 to I-90.
When destinations are equidistant, as the airport nearly is, the queue wins.

Queue decides second: reading the wait times
Our chauffeurs check waits twice: once at dispatch before pickup and again on the QEW near St. Catharines, where the roads split. The sources are the CBSA border wait times for the Canadian side and the bridge operators' own boards, which show both directions.
A useful rule of thumb from the desk: a 15-minute difference in posted wait is worth switching bridges for an airport run; a 30-minute difference is worth it for almost anything. Anything smaller is noise, because posted waits lag reality by a few minutes. Southbound, the US booths set the pace; northbound, the Canadian booths do. The two directions can behave completely differently on the same afternoon.
Tolls: who pays, and in which direction
The Peace Bridge authority says its tolls are collected Canada-bound only, with cashless card payment at all toll lanes and a discount for E-ZPass users. The Niagara Falls Bridge Commission posts its own rates for Lewiston-Queenston and the Rainbow Bridge. Toll amounts change, so we do not print them here.
For our passengers the question does not arise: the bridge toll is inside the fixed, all-in fare, whichever crossing the chauffeur picks on the day. If you are driving yourself, check each operator's site before you leave, and keep a card that works for contactless payment handy for the Peace Bridge lanes.
Trucks, tourists and the time of day
The two bridges have different personalities. Lewiston-Queenston carries a large share of the region's commercial trucks, which use separate lanes and booths but share the approach roads. Weekday mornings see truck traffic build on Highway 405. Cars still usually move well because the passenger lanes are separate.
The Peace Bridge is the natural route for Buffalo day-trippers and Ontario shoppers, so it suffers most on summer Saturdays, long weekends and the Friday afternoon rush southbound. Sunday afternoons northbound are the slowest of the week on both bridges from May to September. Bills home games and big nights downtown bring extra US-side traffic that affects the Peace Bridge landing more than Lewiston.
Duty-free stops on each route
Both crossings have duty-free shops on the approach. Heading south, our chauffeurs can pause at the Canadian-side shop on the way to the bridge; tell them at pickup. On a one-way fare, a short stop fits within normal flexibility. On an hourly booking it is simply part of your time.
Remember that duty-free purchases still count when you come home: returning residents' personal exemptions depend on time away, and the CBSA "I Declare" page sets out the current thresholds. Keep receipts together in your hand luggage, not in the trunk.
The return trip: northbound choices
Coming home, the logic is the same in reverse, with two extra considerations. First, the Canadian booths decide the pace, and CBSA posts those waits. Second, the Ontario side of each bridge feeds different roads: the Peace Bridge returns you to the QEW at Fort Erie with nothing in the way, while Lewiston-Queenston lands at Highway 405 for a quicker run back to St. Catharines and Hamilton.
For an evening return after a Buffalo event, Lewiston-Queenston often wins even from downtown Buffalo, because the Peace Bridge northbound fills with day-trippers heading home. Your chauffeur makes that call on I-190 with live information.

The other two Niagara options
Two more bridges sit between Queenston and Fort Erie. The Rainbow Bridge lands in the middle of Niagara Falls, New York and suits hotels and sights there; our post on the Rainbow Bridge from Niagara Falls NY covers it in detail. The Whirlpool Rapids Bridge is NEXUS-only for passenger vehicles, so it helps only when every person in the car, chauffeur included, holds a card; see NEXUS in a chauffeured car.
Planning fares whichever bridge we use
Fares do not change with the bridge. These are planning figures for a business sedan from downtown Hamilton, one way, all-in with HST shown separately:
| Destination | Usual bridge | Distance | Drive time | Business sedan |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Niagara Falls NY airport (IAG) | Lewiston-Queenston or Rainbow | about 80 km | 65–90 min | $325–400 |
| Buffalo airport (BUF) | Lewiston-Queenston | about 105 km | 80–110 min | $375–465 |
| Rochester NY | Lewiston-Queenston | about 210 km | 2.5–3.25 h | $650–800 |
A Business SUV is about 30 % more, an executive SUV about 65 % more, a Sprinter about 2.75 times and a Jet Sprinter lounge for up to seven about 4.65 times. The Hamilton to Buffalo airport route has the airport detail, and Buffalo airport vs Pearson from Hamilton compares the two airports honestly.
Starting from Niagara or Burlington instead of Hamilton
The bridge maths shifts with the pickup. From Niagara-on-the-Lake, Queenston is a few minutes away and nearly always the first choice. From Fort Erie, the Peace Bridge is at the end of the street. From Burlington or Oakville, add 15–40 minutes to the Hamilton figures and the choice is the same as from Hamilton. Guests staying at the lobbies in our Niagara-on-the-Lake hotels guide often cross to Buffalo airport in under an hour on a quiet morning.
When an hourly booking beats choosing a bridge
Some days use both bridges. A Buffalo shopping trip might cross south at Queenston for the northern malls, then return from downtown Buffalo over the Peace Bridge after dinner. On a one-way fare that is two bookings; on an hourly chauffeur booking it is one car and one chauffeur all day.
Planning figures are $120–145 an hour for a business sedan and $190–235 for an executive SUV, all-in plus HST, three-hour minimum. A six-hour cross-border day in a sedan comes to about $720–870, with the chauffeur choosing each crossing live.
Winter on the two approaches
Snow changes the calculation. The QEW through Grimsby and the Niagara escarpment near St. Catharines catch lake-effect squalls, and the Fort Erie end of the QEW sits close to Lake Erie, where bands of snow can hit the Peace Bridge approach and Buffalo's Southtowns while Queenston stays clear. On the US side, I-190 north toward Lewiston is often in better shape than the Skyway and the roads south of the city.
From December to March our chauffeurs check Ontario 511 before leaving Hamilton, default to the executive SUV for larger parties and lean toward Lewiston-Queenston when storms sit over the lake. If a closure makes the trip unsafe, dispatch calls you to move the time rather than send the car into it.
How to book direct
Book on HamiltonLimo.net's own reservation engine through the floating "Book now" button or the booking page. Enter the pickup, the US address or airport, passengers and bags; add a note if you want a duty-free stop or a particular bridge. The engine shows the fixed all-in fare before you confirm. Cancellation is free more than 72 hours before pickup, 10 % within 72 hours, 50 % within 48 hours and 100 % within 24 hours or for a no-show. Fares and vehicle choices for every US destination are on our cross-border limo page.
