To find things to do in Hamilton this weekend, check four sources: Tourism Hamilton's events calendar, the City of Hamilton site, the TD Coliseum and Tiger-Cats or Forge FC schedules, and the Hamilton Conservation Authority for trail and waterfall access. Then plan one anchor per day, book dinner early and arrange the ride home; a sedan within Hamilton is a planning $75–100.
Any list of "this weekend's events" is out of date by Monday, so this post does something more useful: it shows you where Hamilton's current listings live, what the city's calendar usually looks like month by month, and a simple template for turning that into a relaxed Friday-to-Sunday. For the venues and festivals we cover in depth, our Hamilton events section has a page for each.
Things to do in Hamilton this weekend: where to check
Start with the official sources; they are the ones that are actually updated.
- Tourism Hamilton: the city's visitor calendar, festivals, exhibitions and seasonal events.
- City of Hamilton: city-run events, recreation, road closures and the civic museums.
- TD Coliseum: concerts, hockey and big shows at 101 York Boulevard.
- Tiger-Cats and Forge FC: home games at Hamilton Stadium (the former Tim Hortons Field).
- Hamilton Conservation Authority: waterfalls, Dundas Peak and trail access rules, which change by season.
Then check 511 Ontario on Friday for highway closures; weekend construction on the QEW and 403 is common.
The usual Hamilton calendar, month by month
Dates move every year, so treat this as a guide to what to look for, not a schedule. Always confirm on the organiser's site.
| Month | What usually happens |
|---|---|
| January–February | Winterfest events across the city (usually February); indoor museums; frozen falls |
| March–April | Around the Bay Road Race (usually late March or early April); falls at spring flow |
| May–June | Art Crawl street closures begin; Forge FC season under way; Ticats season opens in June |
| July–August | Festival of Friends (usually August); patio season; Ticats home games; waterfront events |
| September | Supercrawl on James Street North; the Labour Day Ticats game; wine harvest in Niagara |
| October | Escarpment colour peak; Road2Hope marathon (usually autumn); Ticats late season |
| November–December | Holiday markets and lights; TD Coliseum shows; New Year's Eve plans |
Every second Friday of the month is Art Crawl on James Street North. See our Art Crawl guide.
A Friday-to-Sunday template that works
- Friday evening: dinner on James Street North or Locke Street, or a show at TD Coliseum.
- Saturday morning: the Hamilton Farmers' Market, then a morning at the Art Gallery of Hamilton or Dundurn.
- Saturday afternoon: one outdoor anchor: the waterfalls, the Royal Botanical Gardens or the waterfront.
- Saturday night: a game, a festival or a long dinner in Hess Village.
- Sunday: a slow brunch, then something close to home, or a side trip to Niagara wine country.
One anchor per half-day is the rule. Hamilton's sights are spread across 30 km and the Mountain, and the weekends that feel rushed are the ones with five stops in an afternoon.

If there's a game or a big show this weekend
A Ticats game, a Forge FC match or a sold-out TD Coliseum show changes the whole weekend in the core and the east end. Traffic slows for an hour either side, parking disappears near the venue, and restaurants nearby fill. Book dinner earlier than usual and plan your ride home before you go in. Our posts on Tim Hortons Field parking and game day and TD Coliseum parking and pickup cover each venue.
If it's a festival weekend
Festival weekends mean road closures. Supercrawl closes a long stretch of James Street North; the Around the Bay and Road2Hope races close roads across the lower city and into Burlington on race morning. On those weekends, check the organiser's closure map, avoid driving into the core yourself, and give any car booking an extra 15–20 minutes. The Supercrawl site posts its map each year.
If it's raining
Rainy weekends in Hamilton are better than people expect: the Art Gallery of Hamilton, Dundurn, the Canadian Warplane Heritage Museum and the Farmers' Market are all indoors, and the falls are at their most dramatic after heavy rain (view them from the lookouts; trails get slippery). Keep one car for the day so every hop stays dry: a five-hour sedan block is $600–725 all-in plus HST.
If it's a long weekend
Victoria Day, Canada Day, Civic Holiday, Labour Day and Thanksgiving weekends bring out-of-town visitors, busier trails and heavier highway traffic, especially on the QEW toward Niagara on Friday afternoon and back on Monday. Book restaurants and cars earlier, and check holiday hours for the market and museums.
Weekend plans by who's coming
- Couple: Friday dinner on Locke, Saturday gardens and Dundas, Saturday night on James North. See romantic things to do in Hamilton.
- Family: Saturday at the warplane museum and Bayfront Park, Sunday a Forge match or the waterfront trail.
- Friends' group: Hess Village on Saturday night in a Sprinter for up to fourteen ($330–385 per hour).
- Visiting parents: a slow Saturday with lunch in Ancaster and a short scenic drive along the brow.
- Business traveller with a free Saturday: a three-hour chauffeured city highlights loop from the hotel.

A sample Saturday, hour by hour
A realistic Saturday for two visitors staying downtown, using a five-hour sedan block in the middle of the day:
- 9:00 a.m. Walk to the Hamilton Farmers' Market for breakfast.
- 10:30 a.m. Art Gallery of Hamilton on foot, a few minutes away.
- 12:30 p.m. Car pickup at the hotel; about 7 km, 10–15 minutes, to the Royal Botanical Gardens.
- 2:30 p.m. About 12 km, 15–20 minutes, to Webster's Falls and the Spencer Gorge area; check access rules first.
- 4:00 p.m. Coffee in Dundas, then back to the hotel by 5:30 to change.
- 7:30 p.m. Walk or take a short $75–100 hop to dinner on James North or Locke.
The five-hour block is $600–725 all-in plus HST; the morning and evening cost nothing but the walk.
Summer weekends: water, patios and games
From June to August the city moves outdoors. The waterfront trail, Bayfront Park and Pier 4 fill on sunny afternoons, patios on Locke and in Hess Village are full by early evening, and Ticats games bring the east end to life. Arrive at trails and waterfalls before 10 a.m., book patio tables, and expect Friday afternoon traffic on the QEW heading toward Niagara. Evenings stay light late, so a Saturday that starts slowly can still end at a lookout on the brow at sunset.
Winter weekends: indoor plans and Mountain roads
Winter weekends suit galleries, museums, TD Coliseum shows, long dinners and the frozen falls viewed from the lookouts. February usually brings Winterfest events; check the city's listings for dates. The one practical difference is the escarpment: after snow or freezing rain, the Jolley Cut, Sherman and Claremont accesses can be slow, so allow extra time for anything that crosses the Mountain, and let a professional driver handle it. Check Environment Canada on Friday.
Coming in from Toronto, Burlington or Niagara for the weekend
- From downtown Toronto: about 68 km, 50–75 minutes, $270–330 in a sedan; many visitors ride GO in and book the car for the evening. See Toronto to Hamilton: the best way.
- From Burlington: about 15 km, 15–25 minutes, $90–115; the easiest weekend trip.
- From Niagara Falls: about 70 km, 50–60 minutes, $230–280 one way.
- From Grimsby or Beamsville: about 35 km, 25–35 minutes, $125–155.
Weekends with kids: three easy wins
- The warplane museum at the airport: big aircraft, indoors, about 15 km from downtown.
- Bayfront Park and Pier 4: open space, the water and flat paths for strollers and scooters.
- A Forge FC afternoon match: a family crowd, a predictable finish time and a short ride home.
Add child seats at booking for a planning $10–15 each, and tell us the children's ages.
A Friday checklist before the weekend
- Check Tourism Hamilton and the venue sites for what is actually on.
- Book dinner reservations for Friday and Saturday.
- Check the Hamilton Conservation Authority for waterfall and trail rules.
- Look at 511 Ontario for weekend highway closures.
- Check the forecast and pick an indoor backup.
- Book the car once dinner and tickets are fixed.
Last-minute weekend bookings
Plans made on a Thursday are normal. For Friday and Saturday evenings, book the car as soon as you have the dinner reservation or the tickets; game nights, Supercrawl weekend, graduation weeks in June and the December party season fill first. The reservation engine shows live availability and the fixed fare; if a slot is gone, it says so rather than overbooking.

Visitors staying for the weekend
If you are coming in for the weekend, a downtown hotel keeps Friday and Saturday nights walkable; Burlington and Ancaster suit visitors with a car-based plan. The hotels section explains where cars stop at each lobby, and arrivals from Pearson (about 70 km, 45–65 minutes, $245–300) or Hamilton airport (about 15 km, $90–115) include flight tracking.
