Toronto to Hamilton is about 68 km, 50 to 75 minutes by car via the Gardiner, QEW and Highway 403. For one person with light bags, the GO Lakeshore West train from Union Station is usually the best value. For luggage, groups, fixed appointments or late nights, a HamiltonLimo.net business sedan from downtown Toronto is a planning $270–330 one way, all-in plus HST.
Toronto to Hamilton: which way is best for your trip?
"Best" depends on who is travelling, what they carry and what time they need to arrive. We run a Hamilton dispatch desk, so we see every version of this trip: the commuter who should obviously take the train, the family who should obviously not, and the many cases in between. Our Toronto limo service page lists pickup points across the city and the fares to Hamilton, the airport and Niagara; this post matches the trip to the right way of making it.
The options in one table

Car times are from downtown Toronto to downtown Hamilton. Transit times depend on the departure; confirm schedules with GO Transit before you travel.
Trip type 1: the solo commuter or day visitor
Take the train. Lakeshore West trains leave Union Station and run along the lake through Mississauga, Oakville and Burlington; many continue to West Harbour GO on James Street North or to the Hamilton GO Centre on Hunter Street, while at some times of day the rail trip ends at Aldershot with a connection. For one person with a laptop bag, nothing beats the price, and you can work on board. Our post on Hamilton GO Centre versus West Harbour explains which station is closer to where you are going.
Trip type 2: two people with suitcases, arriving by VIA or from Pearson
This is where the calculation turns. VIA Rail does not run into central Hamilton; its nearest stop is Aldershot in Burlington. If you arrive at Union on a VIA train with two large cases and need to be in Ancaster by dinner, the GO train plus a local ride at the Hamilton end works, but the cases go up and down stairs twice. A car collected at Union with train tracking takes you door to door. Our Union Station pickup page shows where chauffeurs meet VIA and GO passengers.
Trip type 3: a family weekend in Hamilton
Two adults, three children, bags, a stroller and a Sunday return. Five GO fares each way add up, and managing children on platforms and in the Union concourse is its own cost. A luxury van or executive SUV takes six people and six bags, with child seats fitted at booking for a planning $10–15 each. The fare is per vehicle, not per person, so the more people travel, the better the car compares.

Trip type 4: a hospital appointment or procedure
If the appointment is at a Hamilton Health Sciences hospital or St. Joseph's Healthcare, the fixed time matters more than the fare, and after sedation you cannot drive or ride transit alone. Book the hourly chauffeur service: the car collects you in Toronto, waits in Hamilton, and brings you home. Planning figures, all-in plus HST: business sedan $120–145 an hour, three hours minimum; a Toronto to Hamilton round trip with a two-hour appointment usually lands at five to six hours.
Trip type 5: game day or a concert
Tiger-Cats games at Hamilton Stadium (the former Tim Hortons Field) and shows at TD Coliseum draw Toronto fans west. The train is fine going there if a Lakeshore West departure lines up; the problem is coming home after 10:30 p.m. For a group, a Sprinter or SUV booked by the hour drops everyone near the gate and waits at an agreed pickup point. See our guide to Tim Hortons Field parking and game day for where cars can stop, and check the schedule on the Tiger-Cats site.
Trip type 6: a business day in Hamilton
A Toronto executive visiting a plant on the Hamilton harbour, a meeting at McMaster Innovation Park and a client lunch on James Street North has three stops and no time to find parking. An hourly first-class sedan ($285–350 an hour, all-in plus HST) or business sedan turns the back seat into an office for the 50 to 75 minutes each way. For regular trips, a corporate car service account keeps invoicing simple.
Trip type 7: a flight from Hamilton airport
Some Toronto travellers fly from John C. Munro Hamilton International Airport in Mount Hope when a route or fare suits them. It is about 80 km from downtown Toronto, 60 to 85 minutes by car, a planning $295–365 by sedan. Airlines and routes change, so check flyhamilton.ca for current service; the Hamilton airport limo page shows the terminal curb and what is included on flight-tracked pickups.
Trip type 8: a wedding weekend
Toronto wedding parties often marry at Hamilton-area venues: the Royal Botanical Gardens, Dundurn, estates in Ancaster and Flamborough, or wineries towards Niagara. The usual plan is a Sprinter for the wedding party, a first-class sedan for the couple and one-way sedans for guests without cars. Multi-vehicle plans and partner vehicles such as stretch limousines are priced in writing by a coordinator; the wedding limo page covers timelines.
The drive west, explained
From downtown, the chauffeur takes the Gardiner Expressway to the QEW, then either stays on the QEW across the Burlington Bay James N. Allan Skyway for Hamilton's east end and Stoney Creek, or switches to Highway 403 through Burlington for downtown, Westdale, McMaster and Ancaster. From North York or Vaughan, the 401 to the 403, or the tolled 407 ETR, is often better. When the 407 is used on a booked trip, the toll is inside the fixed fare.
Time of day on the Toronto to Hamilton run
- Before 6:30 a.m.: about 50 minutes.
- 7:00–9:30 a.m.: the westbound direction is usually lighter than the eastbound commuter flow, but the Gardiner and the 427 interchange can slow you; 60 to 75 minutes.
- Midday: 55 to 65 minutes.
- 3:00–7:00 p.m.: 70 minutes or more leaving downtown.
- Summer Fridays: Niagara-bound traffic on the QEW; the 403 is usually the better choice for central Hamilton.
Chauffeurs check Ontario 511 before each run.

Toronto hotels and Hamilton hotels
Visitors often split a trip between the two cities. Our downtown Toronto hotels page describes lobby pickups near Union and the Financial District, and our downtown Hamilton hotels page covers stays near the convention centre, TD Coliseum and James Street North. A car can move you and your luggage between the two in about an hour.
When the GO bus beats the GO train
The GO bus from Union Station Bus Terminal can be the better choice when your destination is near a bus stop rather than a rail station, or when the train pattern at your hour ends at Aldershot. Traffic makes the bus less predictable than the train at rush hour. Either way, check the trip planner for the departure you want.
What people get wrong about this trip
- Assuming VIA goes to downtown Hamilton. It stops at Aldershot in Burlington.
- Assuming every Lakeshore West train reaches Hamilton. Some end at Aldershot.
- Pricing the car per person. The fare is per vehicle; four people share one fare.
- Forgetting the return. Late-evening trains are fewer; plan the ride home before you go.
- Saying "Hamilton" without the address. The city covers the lower city, the Mountain, Stoney Creek, Ancaster, Dundas and more.
Choosing a vehicle
- Business sedan (3/3): most trips. Business sedan.
- First-class sedan (3/3): executives and special occasions. First-class sedan.
- Executive SUV / luxury van (6/6): families and small groups.
- Sprinter (14/14): wedding parties, fans, corporate teams.
- Jet Sprinter (7/5): captain's chairs and work tables for a leadership team or VIP guests; $650–750 an hour.
Our fleet has no ramp-equipped wheelchair-accessible vehicles; passengers who can transfer are welcome, and chauffeurs fold and stow wheelchairs and walkers.
Trip type 9: a night out on James Street North
Hamilton's restaurants, galleries and live-music rooms draw Toronto groups for birthdays and anniversaries, and the monthly gallery nights on James Street North are busy. The train gets you there; the last convenient train back may not suit a late dinner. An hourly SUV or sedan waits while you eat and takes everyone home, and nobody has to stay sober to drive 68 km. Our Hamilton night out post has ideas and timings.
Winter and the lakeshore
Lake-effect snow and wind on the QEW, especially over the Skyway, can slow the lakeshore route in winter, and freezing rain on the 403 descent into Hamilton needs care. After an overnight snowfall, dispatch sends early cars sooner at no extra charge, and a closure that forces a longer route never changes the confirmed fare. Train riders should check GO service alerts on bad-weather mornings; road and rail delays rarely hit at the same time, which is one reason a flexible plan helps.
