Where we drive

From Hamilton, every day: typical distance and drive time, fixed fare before you book. All routes →

A New York City to Hamilton car service covers about 690 km and takes 7.5 to 9 hours through northern Pennsylvania and upstate New York, crossing at Buffalo or Lewiston. Planning fares for a business sedan are $2,375 to $2,875 one way, all-in plus HST. Many travellers instead fly to Toronto Pearson or Buffalo and ride the last leg with a chauffeur.

New York City to Hamilton car service: who books it

A New York City to Hamilton car service is a whole-day journey, and we are honest that it is not the cheapest way for one person to travel. It is the right answer for a particular set of trips: a family relocating with a car full of belongings and a pet, a traveller who cannot or will not fly, a patient heading to a Hamilton hospital who needs to lie back and rest, a musician or production crew carrying equipment, or a small group that would rather split one car door to door than juggle four airline tickets, checked bags and airport transfers. In those cases a single chauffeur and a single vehicle, door to door, one border crossing and no security lines, is simpler than any combination of planes, trains and transfers. This page sets out the fares, the route and the alternatives so you can decide.

Planning fares, distance and drive time

Planning figures to downtown Hamilton, one way. The reservation engine quotes the exact address, date and vehicle and shows a fixed all-in fare: chauffeur, vehicle, fuel, US and Canadian tolls, bridge toll and gratuity, with HST separate. On a trip this long the fare also covers the chauffeur's return, and for some dates an overnight stay; there are no add-ons for either.

The route north from New York

The usual road route leaves the city west through New Jersey on I-80, turns north on I-380 and I-81 through the Pocono and Scranton area to Binghamton, then runs west on I-86 (NY-17) across the Southern Tier before heading north on I-390 to the New York State Thruway near Rochester. From there the Thruway runs west to Buffalo, and the chauffeur crosses either on the Peace Bridge into Fort Erie or on the Lewiston-Queenston Bridge north of Niagara Falls. The QEW then carries you around the lakeshore to Hamilton. An alternative up the Thruway through Albany and Syracuse is longer in kilometres but sometimes faster when Pennsylvania roads are congested or snowbound. The chauffeur and dispatch choose on the day using live traffic and weather.

Flying instead: JFK, LaGuardia or Newark to Toronto or Buffalo

For most single travellers the fastest trip is a flight. From JFK, LaGuardia or Newark, the flight to Toronto Pearson is short, and the ride from Pearson to Hamilton is about 70 km and 45 to 65 minutes; our Hamilton to Pearson limo page covers that pickup. Flying to Buffalo Niagara International keeps you on a US domestic flight and leaves a 105 km drive with the land border in the middle; see Buffalo to Hamilton. Airlines, routes and schedules change, so check the carriers directly and compare total door-to-door time, including getting to the New York airport, security, the flight, bags and the final drive. With a family or heavy luggage, that total often comes surprisingly close to the car.

The Maple Leaf train to Aldershot

The Maple Leaf is the joint Amtrak and VIA Rail train between New York Penn Station and Toronto, and it stops at Aldershot station in Burlington, the closest stop to Hamilton, as well as Grimsby, St. Catharines and Niagara Falls. It is a long, scenic daytime ride up the Hudson Valley and across New York State, with a border inspection near Niagara Falls. Check the current timetable and fares on VIA Rail before planning around it. From Aldershot we track the train and meet you at the station; a sedan to downtown Hamilton is a short run of about 15 km at $75 to $100. Our Aldershot station page explains the pickup.

Rest stops and meals on a nine-hour drive

Nobody should sit for nine hours without a break, and we plan the day around two or three stops. Northern Pennsylvania and the Binghamton area have plenty of fuel and food at the interstate exits, and the New York State Thruway has service areas with washrooms and food between Rochester and Buffalo. A typical plan is a short coffee stop around two hours out, a lunch stop at roughly the halfway mark, and a comfort stop before the border so nobody is uncomfortable in a bridge queue. Short stops are included in the fixed fare; if you want a long sit-down meal, tell us at booking and we allow for it.

Overnight options: splitting the trip

Some travellers prefer two relaxed half-days to one long one. Common overnight points are the Finger Lakes, Rochester, or the Niagara region on either side of the river, which turns the trip into a small holiday. On the Canadian side, Niagara-on-the-Lake and Niagara Falls have plenty of hotels, and the next morning is just 70 km to Hamilton; see our Niagara Falls and Niagara-on-the-Lake pages for the local area. When the chauffeur stays with you overnight, the fare includes their accommodation; the engine quotes it as a two-day booking. Our travel desk can help arrange the hotel.

Documents for the border

Everyone in the car is inspected by the Canada Border Services Agency at Fort Erie or Queenston. Canadian citizens and permanent residents need a passport or other accepted document such as a NEXUS card. US citizens should carry a passport, passport card, NEXUS card or enhanced driver's licence. Other nationalities need the documents Canada requires for their passport; an eTA is required for visa-exempt travellers who fly into Canada but not for those arriving by car or train. The CBSA and Government of Canada eTA pages are authoritative. For any return to the United States, read US Customs and Border Protection guidance before you travel.

At the booth, and relocation paperwork

Each passenger answers questions for themselves. If you are moving to Canada, keep your immigration papers, work or study permit documents and a list of household goods you are bringing within reach, because the officer may need to process them and a relocation stop can take longer than a normal crossing. Declare everything you bought in the US. Cannabis cannot cross the border in either direction. Pets need vaccination records. If the car is sent to secondary inspection, the chauffeur parks and waits, and the fixed fare does not change. We schedule relocation trips to reach the border in daytime, when the inspection offices are fully staffed.

Choosing the vehicle for a long-distance trip

A business sedan takes three passengers and three large bags and is the most economical option. The business SUV, a black Tahoe or Yukon, takes five passengers and five bags for about $3,090–3,740, close to sedan money for a family of four or five. For a family, a move, or winter travel, the executive SUV with six seats and room for six bags is far more comfortable over 690 km. A first-class sedan gives an executive a quiet, reclining rear seat to work or sleep. The Sprinter carries up to 14 people with luggage, which suits bands, sports teams and production crews, while the Jet Sprinter is a VIP lounge for up to seven and five bags, about 4.65 times the sedan fare. Very large groups can travel by coach through vetted partner operators in the LimousineWorldwide.Directory network; a coordinator prices those in writing.

Timing: when to leave New York

Leaving Manhattan by about 7 a.m. gets you out of the city before the worst of the morning traffic and puts you in Hamilton in the late afternoon. Leaving at midday risks both the Lincoln or Holland tunnel queues and the Buffalo evening rush. Friday departures in summer and the start of holiday weekends are slow at every stage, including the Niagara bridges. In winter the Southern Tier, the Binghamton hills and the Buffalo area see heavy snow; we build in extra time, favour the SUV, and will suggest the Thruway route or a date change if the forecast is bad. Dispatch confirms the plan with you the evening before.

Hourly service once you are in Hamilton

After a long day in the car, most people want to get to their door. Others arrive with a list: collecting keys, a first visit to a new office, a hospital appointment, a quick grocery run. You can keep the same car and switch to hourly chauffeur service in Hamilton: a business sedan is $120 to $145 an hour with a three-hour minimum, and a four-hour block is $480 to $580 all-in plus HST. For a relocation week, a private chauffeur booked for a series of days is often easier than renting a car before you know the roads.

Hamilton to New York City

The trip works in reverse too, usually for families visiting, students heading home, or travellers joining a transatlantic flight from JFK or Newark. For a flight, we suggest planning to reach the airport with generous time, which may mean an overnight along the way; the chauffeur can drop you at an airport hotel the evening before. US inspection happens on the American side of the bridge. For shorter trips south, compare our cross-border limo service page, which covers Buffalo, Niagara Falls NY and Rochester.

How to book direct

Use the Book now button on any page or the booking page. Enter the pickup address, your Hamilton destination, the date and the number of passengers and bags, and add any planned overnight or stops in the notes. The engine shows the fixed all-in fare before you confirm, with no meter, no surge and no marketplace commission. Because this is a long booking, dispatch will call to confirm the route plan. Cancellation is measured from scheduled pickup: free more than 72 hours ahead, 10 % within 72 hours, 50 % within 48 hours and 100 % within 24 hours or for a no-show.

Children, accessibility and comfort

Infant, convertible and booster seats are available on request at a planning figure of $10 to $15 each; add them at booking. On a nine-hour day we also recommend blankets, a pillow and snacks, and the chauffeur carries water. Our own fleet has no ramp-equipped vehicles; for passengers who can transfer to a seat we fold and stow wheelchairs and walkers in the trunk, and for ramp vehicles we refer you to a specialist accessible provider. Pets travel in carriers by arrangement, with their papers ready for the border.

Plan on 7.5 to 9 hours for about 690 km, including short stops and the border crossing at Buffalo or Lewiston. Is it cheaper to fly from New York to Hamilton?

For one traveller, usually yes. Flying from JFK, LaGuardia or Newark to Toronto Pearson or Buffalo and then taking a chauffeur for the last 70 to 105 km is typically cheaper and faster. For a family, a relocation with luggage and pets, or someone who cannot fly, the private car can be similar in total cost and much simpler, with no airport security or connections.

Does the Amtrak Maple Leaf stop near Hamilton?

Yes. The Maple Leaf, run jointly by Amtrak and VIA Rail between New York Penn Station and Toronto, stops at Aldershot station in Burlington, the closest stop to Hamilton. It also stops at Grimsby. From Aldershot a sedan to downtown Hamilton is about 15 km, 15 to 25 minutes and $75 to $100. Check the current timetable on VIA Rail or Amtrak.

US citizens should carry a passport, passport card, NEXUS card or enhanced driver's licence. Canadians need a passport or other accepted document. Other nationalities need what Canada requires for their passport, but visa-exempt visitors entering by land or rail do not need an eTA. People relocating should also carry immigration and household goods paperwork. Check CBSA and US CBP before travelling.

Can we stop overnight on the way from New York to Hamilton?

Yes. We can plan the trip over two days with an overnight in the Finger Lakes, Rochester or the Niagara region. The engine quotes it as a two-day booking, and the fare includes the chauffeur's accommodation. Our travel desk can help book your hotel if you want it arranged at the same time.

Yes. Book with your flight number and we track it. For a flight from the US the fare includes 30 minutes of waiting from actual landing and curbside pickup at the commercial pickup area; meet and greet inside the terminal is a $25 to $35 add-on. A sedan from Pearson to downtown Hamilton is $245 to $300 about 70 km.

Which vehicle is best for moving from New York to Hamilton?

For a family or a relocation, the executive SUV is the usual choice: six seats, room for six large bags, and better comfort over 690 km and in winter. A small group with equipment may need the Sprinter. For furniture, book a moving company; our cars carry passengers, luggage and the essentials you need on day one.
