For most solo travellers, flying from New York to Toronto Pearson or Buffalo, then taking a car the last 70–105 km, is fastest: roughly 5.5–7 hours door to door. The Amtrak and VIA Maple Leaf takes most of a day to Aldershot. A private car covers about 690 km in 7.5–9 hours; a business sedan is $2,375–2,875 all-in plus HST, which suits families, relocations and people who cannot fly.
New York to Hamilton, Ontario: three ways, one decision
People travelling from New York to Hamilton, Ontario usually compare three things: a flight, the train and a car. The honest answer depends on who is travelling, how much luggage there is and what the day is for. Our New York City to Hamilton car service page covers the private-car booking itself: the route, the overnight option and the vehicles. This post is the decision guide. We lay out each option door to door, including the hours and costs the ticket price does not show, so you can choose the one that fits.
Door-to-door times compared
| Option | In the vehicle | Door-to-door, typical | Border | Luggage |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Fly to Toronto Pearson, then a car to Hamilton | About 1.5 h in the air, 45–65 min by car | 5.5–7 h | Canadian customs at the airport | Airline limits |
| Fly to Buffalo, then a car to Hamilton | About 1.25 h in the air, 80–110 min by car | 5.5–7 h | Land border in the car | Airline limits |
| Maple Leaf train to Aldershot, then a car | Most of a day on the train, 15–25 min by car | 12–13 h | Inspection on the train at Niagara Falls | Generous |
| Private car, Manhattan to Hamilton | 7.5–9 h including stops | 7.5–9 h | Land border in the car | Whatever fits the vehicle |
Flying times assume getting to the New York airport, arriving well before departure, the flight, bags and customs. They are planning estimates; your own trip will vary with the airport and the hour.
Flying: the fastest option for most people
From JFK, LaGuardia or Newark, flights to Toronto Pearson are short and frequent. After landing, Canadian customs happens in the terminal, and the drive to Hamilton is about 70 km and 45–65 minutes. A business sedan is $245–300 all-in plus HST; our Hamilton to Pearson limo page covers the pickup, flight tracking and the 30 minutes of included waiting on US flights.
The hidden costs of flying are time and friction: the trip to a New York airport at rush hour, security, and checked-bag fees on some fares. For one person with a carry-on, none of that outweighs the speed. Hamilton's own airport has seasonal and changing routes; check flyhamilton.ca for current service rather than assuming.
Flying to Buffalo instead of Toronto
Some New Yorkers prefer Buffalo Niagara International. The flight is domestic, so there is no international check-in, and fares and schedules sometimes suit better. The border comes later, in the car: about 105 km and 80–110 minutes to Hamilton, with a sedan at $375–465 all-in plus HST. Our Buffalo to Hamilton page explains the pickup.
Buffalo makes the most sense for travellers heading to Hamilton's east end, Stoney Creek or Grimsby, or for anyone who dislikes big-airport connections. The trade-off is a land crossing that can add time on summer weekends. Our post on Buffalo airport vs Pearson from Hamilton compares them in detail.

The train: the Maple Leaf to Aldershot
The Maple Leaf, run jointly by Amtrak and VIA Rail, leaves New York Penn Station in the morning and follows the Hudson Valley and the Empire Corridor through Albany, Syracuse, Rochester and Buffalo to Niagara Falls. Border inspection happens there, and the train continues to Grimsby and to Aldershot in Burlington before Toronto. The full New York to Toronto run takes around 12.5 hours in the current schedule.
It is a beautiful, restful ride, and it is slow. It suits travellers who enjoy trains, dislike flying, or have more luggage than an airline allows, and who treat the day itself as part of the trip. From Aldershot station, a sedan to downtown Hamilton is about 15 km, 15–25 minutes and $75–100; our Aldershot station pickup page shows where the car waits. Check times on VIA Rail or Amtrak.

Driving the whole way
By car, the usual route leaves the city west through New Jersey, runs north through the Poconos and Binghamton, then west across the Southern Tier to the Thruway near Rochester and on to Buffalo, crossing at the Peace Bridge or Lewiston-Queenston. It is about 690 km and 7.5–9 hours with short stops.
Driving yourself is realistic for two adults sharing the wheel. With a chauffeur, the day becomes working or resting time. Planning fares are $2,375–2,875 for a business sedan, $3,675–4,625 for an executive SUV and $6,505–7,875 for a Sprinter, one way, all-in plus HST, including tolls, fuel, gratuity and the chauffeur's return.
What each option really costs per person
Ticket prices change daily, so we will not quote airfares or rail fares. What we can show is how our fixed car fares divide:
| Party | Vehicle | Planning fare | Per person |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 traveller | Business sedan | $2,375–2,875 | $2,375–2,875 |
| 3 travellers | Business sedan | $2,375–2,875 | about $790–960 |
| 4 travellers | Business SUV | $3,090–3,740 | about $775–935 |
| 5 travellers | Executive SUV | $3,675–4,625 | about $735–925 |
| 12 travellers | Sprinter | $6,505–7,875 | about $540–655 |
| 7 travellers | Jet Sprinter | $11,045–13,370 | about $1,580–1,910 |
For one person, flying almost always costs less. For a family or a small team, compare these per-person figures with the real total of flights, bag fees, airport transfers at both ends and the car from Pearson. The gap is often smaller than expected.
Who should choose which
- Solo business traveller, carry-on only: fly to Pearson; book the car from the terminal.
- Couple with a flexible day who love trains: the Maple Leaf to Aldershot.
- Family of five with car seats and a stroller: a private SUV, or fly with a car booked at Pearson and child seats added ($10–15 each).
- Relocation with pets and a car's worth of essentials: a private car, often over two days.
- Traveller who cannot fly, or a patient heading to a Hamilton hospital: a private car, with rest stops planned.
- Band, crew or team with equipment: a Sprinter.
Splitting the trip into two easier days
Nine hours is a long day in any vehicle. Many of our New York clients break the journey with a night in the Finger Lakes, Rochester or Niagara, turning a transfer into a short holiday. On the Canadian side, Niagara Falls hotels and the inns in our Niagara-on-the-Lake hotels guide put you about 70 km from Hamilton for the final morning. The reservation engine quotes a two-day trip as one booking, and our travel desk can arrange the hotel.
Documents for each option
Whichever way you come, every traveller needs accepted documents for Canada. If you fly, you need a passport book: the passport card and enhanced licences are not valid for international air travel. By train or car, US citizens can also use a passport card, enhanced licence or NEXUS card; our post on what Americans need to enter Canada explains the differences. Visa-exempt visitors of other nationalities need an eTA to fly into Canada but not to arrive by land or rail; see the Government of Canada eTA page.
Arriving in Hamilton: what happens next
Most New York visitors come for a reason: family, a wedding, McMaster, a hospital, a job. If the first day has several stops, keep the car. Our hourly chauffeur service runs $120–145 an hour for a business sedan and $190–235 for an executive SUV, all-in plus HST, with a three-hour minimum; a four-hour sedan block is $480–580. For a relocation week, a private chauffeur booked across several days is easier than renting a car before you know the escarpment roads. Business visitors staying downtown will find where cars stop in our downtown Hamilton hotels guide.
Going back to New York
The return mirrors the outbound. Flights home leave from Pearson; allow for US preclearance at the airport as well as check-in. Our Hamilton to Pearson booking tracks your flight time and suggests a pickup. By train, the Maple Leaf southbound calls at Aldershot and Grimsby once a day; check the timetable. By car, US inspection happens on the far side of the Niagara bridges, and a mid-morning departure from Hamilton reaches Manhattan in the evening.
Seasons that change the answer
The best option shifts with the calendar. In winter, flights to Pearson carry the risk of de-icing delays and cancellations, the Maple Leaf can run late, and the car route through northern Pennsylvania and the Southern Tier can see heavy snow; we build in extra time and favour the executive SUV. In summer, the Niagara bridges slow on Friday and Sunday afternoons, which affects both the car and a Buffalo arrival.
Around US Thanksgiving, Canadian Thanksgiving in October and the December holidays, flights fill and fares rise, and a family in one car starts to look better value. March break brings the same effect for families. Whatever you choose, give yourself a buffer before anything that cannot move, such as a wedding or a hospital appointment.
Travelling with children, pets or mobility aids
Children under 16 can cross by land with a birth certificate, which makes the car or train simpler than an international flight for young families. Child seats are available at a planning figure of $10–15 each, added at booking. Pets travel in carriers by arrangement, with vaccination papers for the border. Our own fleet has no ramp-equipped vehicle: we fold and stow wheelchairs and walkers for passengers who can transfer to a seat, and refer ramp needs to a specialist accessible provider.
