Rochester to Hamilton, Ontario is about 210 km and 2.5 to 3.25 hours by car: I-490 and the Thruway west, I-290 and I-190 around Buffalo, the Lewiston-Queenston Bridge, then Highway 405 and the QEW. The Amtrak Maple Leaf also runs from Rochester and stops at Grimsby and Aldershot. A chauffeured business sedan is $650–800 one way, all-in plus HST.
Rochester to Hamilton: the four realistic options
People travelling from Rochester to Hamilton have four sensible choices: drive their own car, rent one, take the train, or book a chauffeur. Each wins in some situations. Our Rochester NY to Hamilton car service page covers the private-car booking in detail, from ROC airport pickups to winter planning. This post steps back and compares the options, with the roads, the train and the typical day for each, so you can pick the one that fits your trip rather than the one we sell.
The shared facts: about 210 km, one international bridge, and a highway that runs through the lake-effect snow belt in winter.
Driving yourself: the main route, kilometre by kilometre
From downtown Rochester, I-490 west joins the New York State Thruway (I-90), which runs past Batavia toward Buffalo; the Thruway uses cashless tolling. East of Buffalo, most Hamilton-bound drivers take I-290 and then I-190 north past Niagara Falls to Lewiston, about 130 km from Rochester in total.
The Lewiston-Queenston Bridge crosses the Niagara River into Queenston. Highway 405 then meets the QEW near St. Catharines, and the QEW runs through Grimsby and Stoney Creek into Hamilton, about 70 km more. Door to door, allow 2.5–3.25 hours with a normal border wait. The Peace Bridge through downtown Buffalo is a reasonable alternative when its queue is shorter; see our bridge comparison.
The slower lakeshore alternative
Drivers with time sometimes skip the Thruway and follow Lake Ontario instead, west from Rochester on NY-104 or the Lake Ontario State Parkway through orchard country to Lewiston. It is quieter, prettier and slower, with small towns, farm stands in autumn and lake views, and it lands at the same Lewiston-Queenston Bridge.
It suits a leisurely couple on a summer weekend, not someone meeting a dinner reservation. In winter it can be worse than the Thruway, because the lakeshore catches its own snow. Our chauffeurs use the Thruway by default and take the lakeshore only when a client asks for the scenic version on an hourly booking.
The train: the Maple Leaf from Rochester
The Maple Leaf, run jointly by Amtrak and VIA Rail between New York Penn Station and Toronto, calls at Rochester and continues through Buffalo and Niagara Falls into Ontario, stopping at Grimsby and Aldershot in Burlington before Toronto. Northbound, it leaves Rochester in the early afternoon in the current timetable, with a border inspection in Niagara Falls.
For some travellers it is ideal: no driving, room to work, and a station a short hop from Hamilton. The trade-offs are one departure a day in each direction, a long stop at the border, and the last leg from the station. Check current times and fares on VIA Rail or Amtrak before planning around it.

The last mile from Aldershot or Grimsby
Aldershot station in Burlington is the Maple Leaf stop closest to Hamilton, about 15 km from downtown. Grimsby is about 35 km east. From either, a chauffeur saves you the taxi-rank scramble with luggage.
| From | Distance to downtown Hamilton | Drive time | Business sedan |
|---|---|---|---|
| Aldershot station, Burlington | about 15 km | 15–25 min | $75–100 |
| Grimsby | about 35 km | 25–35 min | $125–155 |
| Hamilton GO Centre (if you continue by GO) | in town | 5–15 min | $75–100 |
We track the train, so a late arrival moves the pickup with it. Our Aldershot station pickup page shows exactly where the car waits.
Renting a car one way
A rental looks simple until the drop-off. Many rental agreements allow trips into Canada, but a one-way rental from Rochester returned in Ontario usually carries a cross-border drop charge, and not every branch offers it. Add fuel, Thruway tolls, the bridge toll and parking in Hamilton, which is easy at a relative's house and less so at a downtown hotel or a hospital campus.
Where a rental makes sense: a long stay in Ontario with many local trips of your own, and a round trip back to Rochester. Where it does not: a short visit, a senior who dislikes highway driving, or anyone who will not want to drive home after a wedding or a long day at a hospital.
A chauffeur: what the day looks like
A typical weekday from Rochester, three passengers in a sedan:
- 8:30 pickup in Pittsford; bags in the trunk, documents in hand.
- 8:40–9:55 I-490 and the Thruway west, coffee in the car.
- 9:55–10:15 I-290 and I-190 north; the chauffeur checks the bridge waits.
- 10:20–10:35 Lewiston-Queenston Bridge; each passenger answers the CBSA officer.
- 10:35–11:30 Highway 405 and the QEW through Niagara.
- 11:30 arrival at a Westdale address near McMaster.
Three hours, one fixed fare of $650–800 all-in plus HST as a planning range, and nobody drove.
Comparison: which option wins for whom
| Traveller | Best option | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Solo commuter who crosses monthly with their own car | Drive yourself | Cheapest; knows the route |
| Couple with time on a summer weekend | Drive the lakeshore | The scenery is the point |
| Student or researcher, light bags, flexible day | Maple Leaf to Aldershot, then a car | No driving, fixed departure |
| Family of four with luggage | Chauffeur, SUV | One vehicle, one bridge, door to door |
| Patient heading to a Hamilton hospital | Chauffeur, sedan or van | Rest both ways; no parking |
| Business visitor with a day of meetings | Chauffeur, hourly | The car stays through every stop |
Documents for the Rochester to Hamilton crossing
Every passenger needs their own accepted document at the Canadian booth and again when returning to the US. US citizens should carry a passport book, passport card, enhanced driver's licence or NEXUS card; see what Americans need to enter Canada. International students and scholars at Rochester's universities should check both countries' rules well before the date, because leaving the United States can affect their own status. The official sources are CBSA for entering Canada and CBP for returning to the US.
Who travels Rochester to Hamilton, and why
We see a steady mix on this route. Academics and examiners move between Rochester's universities and McMaster University. Families from western New York attend weddings in Ancaster, Burlington and wine country. Patients and their relatives travel to Hamilton Health Sciences and St. Joseph's Healthcare. Canadians fly home through ROC when the fare or schedule suits. Visiting teams and parents cross for tournaments.
For campus visitors, our university and campus visits page explains how a car can wait during tours and meetings.

Winter: the snow belt between Rochester and Buffalo
From December to March, the Thruway between Rochester and Buffalo and the areas south of Buffalo can sit under narrow bands of heavy lake-effect snow, while a few kilometres away the road is clear. Driving yourself, that means watching two countries' forecasts and road reports. With a chauffeur, dispatch does it: an executive SUV by default, winter tires on every car, a pickup moved earlier or later when a band is forecast, and the northern route around Buffalo when it is better. On the Ontario side, the chauffeur checks Ontario 511 before crossing.
Staying over in Hamilton or nearby
Rochester visitors often stay two or three nights. Our downtown Hamilton hotels guide covers the lobbies near the convention centre, TD Coliseum and the GO Centre, and the Ancaster and Mountain hotels page covers the upper city near the Linc and the airport. If your plans include the falls, add a night in Niagara-on-the-Lake, which sits minutes from the Queenston end of the bridge on the way home.
Keeping the car for the day
Many Rochester visitors come for one purpose and a few errands: a morning meeting, lunch with family, a hospital appointment in the afternoon. Our hourly chauffeur service keeps one car and one chauffeur for the whole day. A same-day round trip with four hours of meetings in Hamilton typically runs 10–11 hours; at $120–145 an hour for a sedan, that is roughly $1,200–1,595 all-in plus HST. For a shorter visit, a one-way booking in and a separate one back is usually cheaper.
Timing the trip: when to leave Rochester
Leave mid-morning and you usually miss both the Rochester rush and Buffalo's afternoon peak, reaching Hamilton in time for lunch or an early meeting. Friday afternoons northbound are busier at the bridges from May to September, and Sunday afternoons are the slowest time to come back south. Long weekends on either side of the border, including Victoria Day, Memorial Day, Canada Day, the Fourth of July and both Thanksgivings, add 30–60 minutes.
For a hard start in Hamilton, such as a hospital appointment, a thesis defence or a wedding ceremony, we plan to arrive early rather than on the minute. Twenty spare minutes at a café near McMaster is a better outcome than a queue at Lewiston eating into the booking.
Travelling with children, older relatives or mobility aids
Three hours is manageable for children if the seats are right: infant, convertible and booster seats are available on request at a planning figure of $10–15 each, fitted before pickup. For older relatives, the luxury van has sliding doors and a low step, and we plan a comfort stop at a Thruway service area. Our own fleet has no ramp-equipped vehicle; we fold and stow wheelchairs and walkers for passengers who can transfer to a seat and refer ramp needs to a specialist accessible provider.
How to book direct
Book on HamiltonLimo.net's own reservation engine through the floating "Book now" button or the booking page. Enter the Rochester address or ROC flight number, the Hamilton destination, passengers and bags, and add any child seats ($10–15 each as a planning figure). For a Maple Leaf arrival, book an Aldershot or Grimsby pickup with the train number. The engine shows a fixed all-in fare before you confirm; no app, no surge, no marketplace commission. Cancellation is free more than 72 hours before pickup, 10 % within 72 hours, 50 % within 48 hours and 100 % within 24 hours or for a no-show.
