Porter Airlines flies turboprops from Billy Bishop (YTZ) and jets from Pearson, so a Hamilton traveller should first check which airport the ticket uses. For YTZ, a Hamilton to Billy Bishop airport car is $275–340 by business sedan, about 70 km and 55–80 minutes to Eireann Quay; the budget route is a GO train to Union Station plus the airport's free shuttle. Plan the drive generously and the terminal tightly.
Porter Airlines at Billy Bishop: the Hamilton traveller's starting point
Porter Airlines built its name at Billy Bishop Toronto City Airport, and it remains the island's main carrier. For someone living in Hamilton, the draw is a small terminal close to downtown Toronto and short walks from pavilion to gate. The complication is that Porter now also flies Embraer jets from Pearson and other airports, while the island is served by turboprops such as the Dash 8-400. So step one is reading your ticket: YTZ means the island, YYZ means Pearson. Everything else, pickup time, route and fare, follows from that code. This post is written for regular Porter flyers from the Hamilton area; the route itself, with its time-of-day table, is on our Hamilton to Billy Bishop airport page.
Three ways from Hamilton to a Porter flight at YTZ
| Option | Time from downtown Hamilton | Cost basis | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Private car to Eireann Quay | 55–80 min, about 70 km | $275–340 business sedan, all-in + HST | Luggage, early flights, couples, business |
| GO train to Union + airport shuttle | Train time plus about 15 min shuttle | GO fare; shuttle is free | Solo, carry-on, daytime, flexible |
| Drive yourself and park | 55–80 min plus parking | Fuel, any 407 toll, Stolport parking | Short trips if parking suits |
Check current GO schedules on gotransit.com; we never quote them because they change. The free airport shuttle leaves from 44 York Street beside the Fairmont Royal York, roughly every 15 minutes according to the airport. Parking at the island is run by Stolport.
The Porter day trip: a Hamilton timeline
A common pattern: out early to Ottawa or Montreal, meetings, home the same evening.
- 5:45 a.m. Pickup in Ancaster. Roads are clear; about 60 minutes to the quay.
- 6:45 a.m. Drop-off at the pavilion on Eireann Quay, a six-minute tunnel walk, then security.
- Morning and afternoon. Meetings at the destination.
- Evening. The return flight is tracked; the chauffeur is staged near Bathurst Street.
- Landing plus 15–20 minutes. You come up from the tunnel, message the chauffeur, and the car is in the turning circle.
- About an hour later. Home in Ancaster.
Book both legs at once and the return automatically follows the evening flight. On a corporate car service account, the assistant sets it up once with standing notes.

GO train and shuttle vs a car: honest maths
For one person with a small bag on a daytime flight, the GO train plus the free shuttle is the cheapest way to Porter at YTZ, and we say so. The picture changes quickly:
- Two travellers. A sedan at $275–340 split two ways is $140–170 each, door to door, with no transfer at Union.
- Early departures. The first trains may not get you to the island in time for a 7 a.m. flight; a car at 5:45 a.m. does.
- Luggage. Carrying bags from the Hamilton GO Centre through Union Station to the shuttle stop is the most tiring part of the transit route.
- The return. After an evening landing, the last trains and the drive home from the GO station are the weak link. Our post on the last GO train to Hamilton covers it.
Porter from Pearson instead?
If your Porter flight is a jet from Pearson, the ground trip is different: highways almost to the terminal, about 70 km and 45–65 minutes from downtown Hamilton, and a business sedan at $245–300. Confirm the terminal on your booking; our post on Pearson Terminal 1 or Terminal 3 explains why it matters to the chauffeur. For the wider decision, read Billy Bishop airport flights vs Pearson.
Packing for a turboprop
Island aircraft are smaller than jets, and many Porter island flyers travel with carry-on only. Porter's current baggage allowances and fare inclusions are on flyporter.com; check them for your fare type, because they differ by fare and change over time. For us, the bag count decides the vehicle: a business sedan takes three passengers and three bags, and an executive SUV six and six. Golf bags and skis need space, so list them at booking.
Timing a Porter departure from Hamilton
Porter's island terminal is compact, so the variable is the drive. Our planning guide from downtown Hamilton to Eireann Quay:
- Before 7 a.m.: 55–60 minutes.
- 7–10 a.m. weekdays: 75–85 minutes; eastbound Gardiner traffic is heaviest.
- Midday: 60–65 minutes.
- 3–7 p.m. weekdays: 70–80 minutes.
- Stadium, Exhibition or waterfront event days: add time on Lake Shore.
Add the airline's check-in and bag-drop cut-off, then a few minutes for the tunnel. The airport lists operating hours of 5:00 a.m. to 11:00 p.m.
Where Burlington, Oakville and Grimsby fit
Porter flyers are spread around the Golden Horseshoe. Planning ranges to Eireann Quay by business sedan, all-in plus HST: Burlington about $225–275 (about 55 km, 45–65 minutes), Oakville about $190–230 (about 40 km, 35–55 minutes), Grimsby about $340–415 (about 100 km, 70–95 minutes). See our Burlington and Oakville pages for other runs from those cities, and the downtown Hamilton hotels page if a visitor is flying out after a stay.

Working on the way: the first-class sedan
For regular Porter flyers, the drive to the island is a working hour. A first-class sedan (S-Class or 7 Series class) gives a quieter cabin for calls and a laptop. It runs about 2.5 times the business-sedan fare, roughly $690–850 one way to the quay as a planning range. Many executives use it for the evening return, when they are tired, and a business sedan for the morning run.
When the Porter trip becomes a Toronto day
The island sits minutes from the Financial District and King Street West. If your Porter flight lands at noon and you have two meetings downtown before going home, book an hourly chauffeur rather than a transfer: one car and one chauffeur, 3-hour minimum, $120–145 per hour by business sedan, all-in plus HST. The car waits outside each meeting with your bag in the trunk and takes you home to Hamilton at the end. A 4-hour sedan booking is $480–580.
Mistakes Porter flyers make from Hamilton
- Booking a car to "Toronto airport" without the code. A Porter jet from Pearson and a Porter turboprop from the island leave from places 25 km apart.
- Timing the drive like Pearson. The last few kilometres into Bathurst Street are the slow part; the terminal is the quick part.
- Forgetting the return. Island arrivals end in a five-minute turning circle on Eireann Quay; a tracked car staged nearby is what makes that work.
- Carrying bags through Union at rush hour to save money on a trip where two people could have shared a car.
- Leaving documents in a checked bag on a transborder flight. Keep them with you through the island terminal.
A two-minute check of the ticket and the pickup time avoids all five.
Weather and diversions on Porter island flights
Fog over the lake occasionally delays or diverts flights, usually to Pearson. With your flight number on the booking, our tracking catches it and the chauffeur goes to Pearson instead; the fare is adjusted to the Pearson structure. If Porter rebooks you onto a later flight, message dispatch and the pickup moves. In winter, lake-effect squalls on the QEW are the more common problem, and dispatch may move your departure pickup earlier. Current road conditions are on Ontario 511.
Frequent flyers: receipts, accounts and standing orders
People who fly Porter every month rarely want to rebook the same car each time. A corporate account keeps traveller profiles, preferred vehicle, billing details and notes such as "evening return, first-class sedan" on file, and each trip becomes a two-line request. Every receipt shows the all-in fare with HST itemized, which is what expense systems ask for, and gratuity is already inside the fare. For executive assistants juggling several travellers, a single dispatch desk for YTZ, Pearson and Hamilton airport means one supplier and one standard, rather than a different arrangement for each airport.
Visiting Hamilton on a Porter flight
The route also runs the other way. Visitors fly into the island on Porter for a campus visit at McMaster, a hospital appointment, a wedding or a meeting at McMaster Innovation Park, and need 70 km of ground transport to finish the trip. The chauffeur meets them at the mainland pavilion, loads the bags and drives straight to Hamilton; with meet & greet the chauffeur waits at the doors with a name board. For overnight stays, our downtown Hamilton hotels and Ancaster and Mountain hotels pages describe where cars stop at each lobby, and our post on hotels near McMaster University covers the west end.
Families and older travellers on Porter
Porter's island flights suit families better than people expect: a short walk, a small terminal and elevators at both ends of the tunnel. The ground side needs a little planning. Car seats are installed before the pickup, so add them at booking. An executive SUV or luxury van takes six passengers and six bags. For an older parent flying alone, request airline wheelchair assistance when booking the flight, and add meet & greet so the chauffeur takes over from the airline assistant at the pavilion doors. We fold and stow manual chairs and walkers for passengers who can transfer to a seat; our fleet has no ramp vehicles.
Booking your Porter transfer direct
On the booking page, enter YTZ or YYZ, your Porter flight number and your address. Choose the vehicle, add meet & greet (planning figure $25–35) or child seats ($10–15 each), and see the fixed all-in fare, HST shown separately, before you confirm. No app and no aggregator commission. Cancellation is free more than 72 hours before pickup; 10 % inside 72 hours, 50 % inside 48 hours, and 100 % inside 24 hours or for a no-show.
