The Hamilton GO train schedule is a Lakeshore West pattern: frequent trains to Aldershot, hourly trains to West Harbour, and a few express trips to Hamilton GO Centre and Confederation. Late at night, GO route 18 buses take over for the trains. Check gotransit.com for tonight's last trip; if you miss it, a booked car from Union is $270–330.
Hamilton GO train schedule: how the evening works
GO does not run one timetable to "Hamilton"; it runs a Lakeshore West line whose trains end at different places. That is why two people can give opposite answers about the last train home. This post explains the pattern, where it thins out and what to do afterwards. If you already know you will be out late in Toronto, the simplest answer is on our Hamilton to Union Station limo page: a business sedan is a planning range of $270–330 all-in plus HST, about 68 km and 50–75 minutes, booked in advance with the train or time you would have caught. We do not print train times here, because they change every schedule period; the official GO Transit site and its PDF timetables are the source of truth.
Which Hamilton stations do GO trains actually reach?
- Aldershot GO in Burlington, 1199 Waterdown Road: the end point for many all-day Lakeshore West trains. About 10 minutes by car from downtown Hamilton.
- West Harbour GO on James Street North: all-day trains, but typically hourly rather than every half hour.
- Hamilton GO Centre on Hunter Street: a handful of weekday express trips, and the hub for GO buses.
- Confederation GO on Centennial Parkway in the east end: served by trains continuing to Niagara Falls.
In broad terms, weekday local trains run about every 30 minutes as far as Aldershot and about every 60 minutes at West Harbour, with extra express trips at set times. Our sibling post comparing Hamilton GO Centre vs West Harbour goes into which to use.
Why the "last train" is different for every address
Your real last train is the last one that gets you home, not the last one leaving Union. Three examples:
- Lower City near James North: the last train that continues to West Harbour is your deadline.
- The Mountain, Ancaster or Stoney Creek: the last West Harbour train plus a late HSR bus, or a taxi from the station, is your real deadline. After 11 p.m. that second leg is the hard part.
- Waterdown or north Burlington: the last Aldershot train and a short car ride.
If the train you need has gone, the next option is often a GO bus rather than a train.
What happens after the last train?
On the Lakeshore West corridor, GO route 18 buses replace the trains early in the morning and late at night, running along the lakeshore to Hamilton GO Centre with a handful of late trips each night. They are slower than the train, stopping at stations along the way, but they are cheap and they exist. Check the route 18 times on GO Transit for your night of the week; Friday and Saturday patterns differ from Sunday to Thursday. The bus drops you at Hunter Street downtown, so you still need the last leg to your door.

Your options after midnight, compared
| Option | Door to door from Union to downtown Hamilton | Cost level | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|
| GO route 18 late bus | 75–110 min, plus the last leg | Lowest | Solo, light bag, not in a hurry |
| GO train to Aldershot + taxi | 50–70 min if a train is still running | Low | Waterdown, Burlington, lower city west |
| Rideshare from downtown Toronto | 50–75 min, about 68 km | Variable; late-night pricing can spike | Short notice, one or two people |
| Booked sedan from Union | 50–75 min, about 68 km | $270–330 all-in + HST, fixed | Late VIA arrivals, groups, bags |
| Booked sedan from Aldershot | 10–15 min, about 12 km | $75–100 all-in + HST | You caught the train but not the connection |
Our fares are planning ranges; the reservation engine fixes the exact figure before you pay. Rideshare numbers change by minute and demand, so we do not quote them.
The cheapest good fix: book the short leg
The most useful trick most Hamilton riders do not know: if you can make a late Aldershot train but nothing further, book a car from Aldershot station instead of from Union. The train does the 55 km; the chauffeur does the last 10 to 20. A business sedan from Aldershot to downtown Hamilton, Westdale, Dundas or Waterdown is a planning range of $75–100, under a third of the Union fare, and the train is tracked so the car is waiting when you step off. The same logic works at West Harbour GO for Mountain addresses when the train runs but the late bus up the escarpment does not suit.
When to book a car from Union instead
- A late VIA train from Montreal or Ottawa is running behind and will land after the last Hamilton train. Book with the train number; dispatch tracks it.
- Three or four of you after a game or dinner: one fare split four ways beats four late tickets plus four taxis.
- Heavy luggage from a trip, a conference booth, sports gear.
- Weekend track work, when trains are replaced by buses and the journey doubles; Metrolinx posts closures on metrolinx.com.
- Winter nights when a 20-minute wait on an open platform in a squall is not an option.
A Friday night, two ways
A couple from Stoney Creek goes to dinner on King West. Plan A: the 10-something train to West Harbour, then a taxi up the Mountain. They miss it by four minutes, the next choice is a late bus to Hunter Street, and they walk in at 1:40 a.m. Plan B: they book an hourly chauffeur for the evening instead: pickup at home at 6 p.m., dinner, a drink on Queen West, home at 11:30. Six hours in a business sedan at $120–145 per hour, all-in plus HST, no parking, no timetable. Or, cheaper, they take the GO in and book a one-way car home for 11 p.m. Both B-plans beat racing a train.
Checking tonight's last train: a two-minute routine
- Open the GO trip planner or the Lakeshore West PDF timetable on GO Transit.
- Choose the direction "to Hamilton" and look at the final trains listed for the right day of the week.
- Note which station each ends at: Aldershot, West Harbour, Hamilton GO Centre or Confederation.
- Check GO's service updates for delays or track work on your date.
- Decide your backup before you go out: the route 18 bus time, or a car booked for a fixed time.
Is GO service different on weekends and holidays?
Yes. Weekend and holiday Lakeshore West service follows its own pattern, and summer weekends add trips toward Niagara Falls that stop in Hamilton's east end. Holiday Mondays often run a weekend schedule. Big events such as a Blue Jays game or a concert can bring extra or delayed trains. Do not rely on a weekday pattern you remember; look it up for the date. What the chauffeur does on a late pickup
A late booking from Union starts the same way as a daytime one: the chauffeur leaves Hamilton with time to spare, holds near your exit, and pulls in when you message from the door. After midnight the core is quieter and the drive home usually takes 50 to 55 minutes via the Gardiner, QEW and 403. If the Gardiner is closed overnight for maintenance, which happens, the chauffeur uses Lake Shore Boulevard; the fixed fare does not change. Our Union Station pickup guide explains exactly where to walk.

Getting from the station to your door at night
The last kilometre is where late journeys fall apart. Hamilton's HSR buses thin out late in the evening, the Mountain routes climb the escarpment on long loops, and a taxi rank at West Harbour or Hunter Street is not guaranteed after midnight. If you rely on the late GO bus, check the HSR trip planner for the connection before you leave Toronto, and keep a taxi number saved. Stations with free parking suit people who drove in; West Harbour and Aldershot both have lots, but read the overnight parking rules posted on site. For a Mountain or Ancaster address, booking a car to meet the train or the late bus is the difference between being home at midnight and standing at a stop in January. Families collecting a teenager from a late train can book on the teen's behalf and pay online.
Staying over instead
Sometimes the right answer is not to go home. If the last train has gone and you have an early meeting downtown anyway, a room near the station and a car in the morning can make sense. Our downtown Toronto hotels page lists lobby pickup notes around Union, and a morning sedan back to Hamilton is the same $270–330 planning range, with lighter traffic outbound before 7 a.m.
Parents collecting teenagers after a late train
A common call comes from a parent on the Mountain whose son or daughter is coming home from a Toronto concert on the last train. Driving down to West Harbour at midnight is fine once; doing it every month is not. Book the station pickup in the teen's name with their mobile, add your own number as the booker, and pay online. The chauffeur texts the teen, waits at the station with 15 minutes included after the train's actual arrival, and drives them to the door.
