For Hamilton travellers, Billy Bishop airport flights suit short business trips on Porter or Air Canada: a small terminal and quick walks, but a slower final approach through downtown Toronto (about 70 km, 55–80 min, sedan $275–340). Pearson has far more routes, jets and long-haul flights and is slightly quicker by road (about 70 km, 45–65 min, sedan $245–300). Choose by flight first, then by time of day. Billy Bishop airport flights vs Pearson: the short answer
Pick the airport that has the flight you want at a sensible time, then let the ground trip decide ties. Billy Bishop Toronto City Airport (YTZ) is the island airport beside downtown Toronto; its own site describes service to "more than 20 cities in Canada and the U.S." and lists operating hours of 5:00 a.m. to 11:00 p.m. Toronto Pearson (YYZ) is Canada's largest airport, with domestic, transborder and long-haul flights at all hours. From downtown Hamilton, both are about 70 km away. What differs is how the last stretch of road behaves, how long you spend inside the terminal, and what happens if the weather turns. Our Billy Bishop airport page covers the island terminal itself; this post is the decision guide.
Side by side from downtown Hamilton
Planning ranges, one way, business sedan, all-in plus HST. The reservation engine quotes your exact address and time.
| Billy Bishop (YTZ) | Toronto Pearson (YYZ) | |
|---|---|---|
| Distance from downtown Hamilton | about 70 km | about 70 km |
| Typical drive time | 55–80 min | 45–65 min |
| Business sedan, one way | $275–340 | $245–300 |
| Business SUV, one way | about $360–440 | about $320–390 |
| Executive SUV, one way | about $455–560 | about $405–495 |
| Where the car stops | Mainland pavilion, Eireann Quay | Terminal 1 or 3 curb |
| Last leg to check-in | Tunnel (6 min or less) or 90-second ferry | Walk in from the curb |
| Aircraft | Turboprops | Turboprops and jets |
| Airport hours | 5:00 a.m. to 11:00 p.m. | Around the clock |
The fare gap, about $30–40 each way in a sedan, comes from the slow downtown approach rather than distance.
Where Billy Bishop wins for Hamilton travellers
- Short business trips to Ottawa, Montreal and other eastern cities, especially when you value a small terminal and short walks.
- A downtown Toronto meeting on the same day. The island is minutes from the Financial District, so a meeting before an afternoon flight is easy to fit.
- Travellers with carry-on only. Island flights use smaller aircraft, and the whole process suits light packers.
- People who dislike big terminals. Walking distances at YTZ are short compared with Pearson's piers.
Where Pearson wins
- Long-haul, sun and most US destinations. Pearson's route map is simply far larger.
- Early mornings and late nights. Billy Bishop's listed hours are 5:00 a.m. to 11:00 p.m.; Pearson never closes.
- Heavy luggage and families. The curb-to-check-in walk is direct, and larger aircraft take more bags.
- Rush hour from Hamilton. Pearson is reached by highway almost to the curb; the Gardiner and Lake Shore approach to Bathurst Street is the slow part of any YTZ trip.
- Jets and connections. If you are connecting onward, Pearson's hub network usually gives more options. Check with your airline where US customs happens on your route.

Door-to-door time: a worked example
Take a Hamilton traveller on a mid-morning weekday flight to Ottawa, carry-on only.
Billy Bishop: pickup in the Durand neighbourhood at 7:10 a.m.; the Gardiner is at its heaviest eastbound, so plan 75–85 minutes to Eireann Quay; six minutes through the tunnel; a compact security area. Allow the airline's cut-off plus a margin.
Pearson: pickup at 7:20 a.m.; 403 and QEW or the 407 to the airport, 50–65 minutes; a longer walk from curb to gate and busier security lanes at peak times.
On a morning like this the two often land within 15–20 minutes of each other door to door. The deciding factors become the flight time you want and how much you value the calmer terminal. At 5:30 a.m., before traffic builds, the island's drive drops to 55–60 minutes and its advantage grows.
What the drive into downtown actually involves
Pearson sits beside Highways 401, 409 and 427, so the chauffeur stays on fast roads until the terminal ramp. Billy Bishop means following the QEW until it becomes the Gardiner at the Humber River, then working down to Lake Shore Boulevard and Bathurst Street. Events at the Exhibition grounds, a stadium game or a waterfront festival can slow those last streets sharply. Dispatch checks Ontario 511 and City of Toronto road notices on the morning of travel. None of that is a reason to avoid the island airport; it is a reason to leave on time.
Porter, Air Canada and the aircraft question
Porter Airlines is the main carrier at Billy Bishop, and Air Canada also flies there. Commercial service at the island uses turboprop aircraft such as Porter's Dash 8-400; Porter's jet flights operate from Pearson and other airports. So the same airline can offer you both airports, sometimes on the same route. If your booking tool shows "Toronto" without saying which airport, look for the code: YTZ is the island, YYZ is Pearson. It changes where your chauffeur goes. Our post on flying Porter from Billy Bishop covers Porter-specific planning.
Weather: fog, wind and diversions
The island sits on Lake Ontario, and fog or strong wind can delay or divert flights, usually to Pearson. Because every HamiltonLimo.net pickup is tied to your flight number, a diversion simply sends the chauffeur to the right Pearson terminal and the fare is adjusted to the Pearson structure. In winter the bigger risk is the road: lake-effect squalls on the QEW and ice on the escarpment accesses at the Hamilton end. Check Environment Canada the day before, and expect a message from dispatch if we want to leave earlier.
Personas: who should pick which
- The Ancaster consultant flying to Montreal twice a month: Billy Bishop on midday flights, Pearson for the 6 a.m. departure. Book both legs as a round trip on a corporate car service account.
- The family of five going south in March: Pearson, in an executive SUV or luxury van for six people and six bags.
- The retired couple visiting family in Halifax: either; ask which has the more comfortable flight time and use meet & greet on the return (planning figure $25–35).
- The student heading home to Ottawa: GO train to Union Station and the airport's free shuttle to the island is the budget route; see below.
The honest transit alternatives
For Billy Bishop, GO Transit trains run from Hamilton to Union Station, and the airport runs a complimentary shuttle between Union Station and the airport, from the west side of the Fairmont Royal York at 44 York Street, roughly every 15 minutes according to its website. For Pearson, GO runs bus service from Hamilton; our post on the cheapest way from Hamilton to Pearson compares the options. With luggage, an early flight or a group, a door-to-door car is the simpler choice.

Time inside the terminal: security, bags and walking
Door-to-door time is not only the drive. At Billy Bishop the pavilion, the tunnel and a compact terminal keep walking short, and a traveller with carry-on only can be at the gate soon after stepping out of the car. At Pearson, Terminal 1 and Terminal 3 are large, with longer walks to the gates and more people in the security lanes at peak hours; the airport's own site posts current information. Checked bags add time at both airports, because the bag-drop cut-off comes before security. Our rule of thumb for Hamilton travellers: at the island airport, plan the drive generously and the terminal tightly; at Pearson, the drive is more predictable and the terminal needs more of your margin. Airlines set the real deadlines, so follow your airline's recommended arrival time at either airport.
Parking at the airport or a car from Hamilton?
Frequent flyers from Hamilton often ask whether to drive themselves. At Billy Bishop, parking is managed by Stolport, with on-site and off-site options listed on its site; downtown land is scarce, so check current rates before you plan on it. At Pearson, parking is plentiful but a week away adds up, and our post on Pearson parking vs a car from Hamilton runs the numbers. The other cost of driving yourself is the drive home: after a late flight, a 70 km run from Bathurst Street or Mississauga back to the Mountain is the part of the trip people most often wish they had handed to someone else.
Families and groups: the case for Pearson
Island flights use smaller aircraft, so groups of six or more are harder to seat together on the same departure, and families with car seats, strollers and checked cases usually find Pearson simpler. On the ground, an executive SUV or luxury van carries six passengers and six bags to either airport; a Sprinter takes fourteen. Large vehicles are harder to position on the small quay at Eireann Quay, so for groups above six heading to the island we plan the drop-off point with you at booking. Child seats are added at booking at a planning figure of $10–15 each.
Adding a downtown meeting: the hourly option
The island airport's best trick is its closeness to downtown. A Hamilton executive can keep one car all day with our hourly chauffeur service: pickup at home, a morning meeting on King Street West, lunch, then Eireann Quay for a 3 p.m. flight. A business sedan is $120–145 per hour and a first-class sedan $285–350 per hour, 3-hour minimum, all-in plus HST; a 4-hour sedan booking is $480–580. Staying over instead? Our downtown Toronto hotels page shows where cars stop at each lobby.
Coming home: which airport is easier to be collected from?
Both work well with a booked car. At Pearson the chauffeur uses the commercial pickup area at your terminal; at Billy Bishop you cross back to the mainland pavilion and the car meets you on Eireann Quay. Waiting is included from actual landing: 30 minutes on domestic and US flights, 60 minutes on other international arrivals. Our post on Billy Bishop pickups at Eireann Quay explains that curb step by step.
