Yes, Toronto Pearson is open 24 hours, but it works differently overnight: the airport treats roughly 12:30–6:30 a.m. as restricted night hours, few flights move, and not every service or checkpoint runs all night. For a 6 a.m. flight from Hamilton, plan a pickup around 2:45–3:15 a.m. for the 45–50 minute, 70 km early-morning drive, and check your airline's check-in opening time.
Is Pearson open 24 hours?
Fares and general timing are on our Hamilton to Pearson airport route page. The terminals at Toronto Pearson operate around the clock, and the airport's public areas do not close at night. What changes is the rhythm. Pearson's noise management programme treats the hours from about 12:30 to 6:30 a.m. as restricted night hours, when far fewer aircraft take off and land. Check-in desks open when each airline's first flight of the morning needs them, and security checkpoints open in step with the departure wave, so the question for a Hamilton traveller is less "is it open" and more "when does my airline's desk open, and how do I get there at that hour?" This post is the dawn-flight playbook.
What a 6 a.m. flight really means from Hamilton
Work backwards, the way our dispatchers do:
- Departure 6:00 a.m.
- Airline arrival guidance: for a domestic flight often around two hours, for US and international flights more. Use your own airline's figure.
- Drive at that hour: about 45–50 minutes from downtown Hamilton for the roughly 70 km, the fastest the road ever is.
- A small buffer: 10 minutes normally, 20–30 in snow.
| Flight at 6:00 a.m. | Be at the terminal by | Drive plus buffer | Pickup in downtown Hamilton |
|---|---|---|---|
| Domestic, clear weather | about 4:00 a.m. | 50 min + 10 | about 3:00 a.m. |
| US (preclearance at Pearson) | about 3:00–3:30 a.m. | 50 min + 10 | about 2:00–2:30 a.m. |
| Sun or other international | about 3:00 a.m. | 50 min + 10 | about 2:00 a.m. |
| Domestic, snow forecast | about 4:00 a.m. | 50 min + 30 | about 2:40 a.m. |
Those times look extreme on paper. They are ordinary for an airport run, and they are why a dawn flight is best booked with someone whose job is to be awake.
Can you get to Pearson by transit before dawn?
Possibly, depending on the day's timetable, and you must check it rather than assume. GO's route 40 bus runs between Hamilton GO Centre and Pearson Terminal 1; look up its first trips on GO's schedules page for your travel date and see whether any trip reaches the airport before your airline's cut-off. The rail route, a GO train to Union and the UP Express to Terminal 1, depends on the first GO train from Hamilton, which is usually too late for a 6 a.m. flight. For many dawn departures there is simply no transit trip that fits, which is when a car is the only door-to-door option. Our cheapest way to Pearson, ranked post covers the daytime alternatives.

App rides and taxis at 3 a.m.
A rideshare request at 2:45 a.m. from Binbrook, Waterdown or the upper Mountain is a gamble: there may be no driver nearby, or none willing to take a 70 km trip, and early-morning demand can push the price up. A taxi company may accept a scheduled booking; ask them to confirm the evening before and to tell you the car size. We compare both in Uber from Hamilton to Pearson and how much a taxi to Pearson costs.
How a pre-booked dawn pickup works
With HamiltonLimo.net the dawn run is routine work. You book on our own engine with the flight number; the dispatcher suggests a pickup time; the chauffeur is scheduled, not called in; and you receive a confirmation message the evening before with the chauffeur's name, car and plate. The chauffeur arrives a few minutes early and waits quietly — no horn at 3 a.m. — and messages you on arrival. The fare is the same fixed all-in figure as at midday: $245–300 for a business sedan from downtown Hamilton, $405–495 for an executive SUV, plus HST. We recommend booking at least 24 hours ahead for pickups before 5 a.m.; in March Break and the Christmas holidays, book as early as you can, because dawn cars fill first.
The night before: a checklist for a 3 a.m. start
- Check in online and save the boarding pass.
- Confirm your terminal — see Pearson Terminal 1 or 3?
- Pack the car bag the night before and leave it by the door.
- Put passports, phone charger and keys in one place.
- Check Environment Canada for overnight snow or freezing rain.
- Read the chauffeur confirmation and save the number.
- Leave the porch light on so the chauffeur can see the house number.
- Set two alarms, 20 minutes before pickup and 10 minutes before.
Winter dawns and the escarpment
The first run of a winter morning is the one most exposed to overnight snow. Plows may not have finished the side streets on the Mountain, and the escarpment accesses — the Jolley Cut, the Claremont, Sherman — can be slow or closed in a storm. When a squall or freezing rain is forecast, our dispatcher moves the pickup earlier and messages you the evening before, rather than rushing on the road. Chauffeurs check Ontario 511 before leaving, and all our cars run winter tires in season. Clear a path to the door if you can; it saves a few minutes with the bags.

Sleeping near the airport instead
For a 6 a.m. international departure, a night at one of the Pearson airport hotels can make more sense than a 2 a.m. alarm. We drive you from Hamilton to the hotel in the evening — the same $245–300 sedan planning fare, at an easier hour and often with lighter traffic after 7 p.m. — and in the morning many hotels run their own shuttles to the terminals, or we can bring you over in a few minutes. Our post on Pearson airport hotels the night before a flight compares the options. Families with small children often find the hotel night gives everyone four more hours of sleep.
Families and older travellers on a dawn flight
Children asleep at 3 a.m. can be carried to the car in pyjamas if their seats are already fitted; add infant, convertible or booster seats at booking (a planning figure of $10–15 each) and they will be installed before the chauffeur leaves the garage. A business SUV, a Tahoe or Yukon, takes five passengers and five bags; an executive SUV or luxury van takes six passengers and six bags, and a van's sliding door and lower step suit grandparents. If a parent needs airline wheelchair assistance, book it with the airline and tell us; the chauffeur drops at the door nearest the check-in zone and helps with the bags.
Business travellers: the first flight out
Consultants and executives take the first flight to be in Calgary, Chicago or New York for a morning meeting. For them the dawn car is not about cost; it is about arriving on time and able to work. A first-class sedan gives a quieter cabin for the drive. Companies that do this often set up a corporate account with traveller profiles, so the standing preferences — the 407, bottled water, no conversation before coffee — are on every booking.
Coming back: the other end of an early trip
If you leave at dawn, you often return late. Book the return at the same time as the outbound, with the arriving flight number, so it is tracked. If the flight slips past midnight, the booking moves with it; included waiting starts at actual landing, 30 minutes for domestic and US flights and 60 for other international arrivals. See landing at Pearson after midnight for the overnight return.
What is open inside the terminal before dawn
Arriving at 3:30 or 4 a.m. is not arriving at an empty building. Public areas are open, some food outlets and a convenience store in each terminal keep long hours, and airline staff start setting up their desks ahead of the first wave. Do not count on a full breakfast before security, though; bring water and a snack for children. Once check-in opens the queue can build quickly, because every early flight's passengers arrive in the same hour. Being near the front of that queue is the main reason to arrive early rather than exactly on the airline's minimum.
Five dawn-flight mistakes we see
- Booking the car the night before in March Break, when every early chauffeur is already scheduled.
- Planning from the daytime drive time and forgetting that snow on a dark side street is slow.
- Assuming the first GO bus fits without checking the timetable for that specific date.
- Leaving passports in the carry-on that goes into the trunk.
- Not telling us the terminal, so the drop is confirmed in the car at 3:40 a.m. rather than the evening before.
Burlington, Ancaster and Stoney Creek pickups
Pickup times move with your address. From Burlington, about 50 km from Pearson, you can leave later than downtown; from Ancaster or Dundas, about 75 km, and Stoney Creek, about 80 km, leave a little earlier. The engine sets a fare for your exact street, roughly $195–240 by sedan from Burlington and $270–325 from Stoney Creek as planning figures, and the dispatcher's suggested pickup time allows for the escarpment if you live on the Mountain. See our Stoney Creek page for local details.
Is it cheaper to fly from Hamilton for early flights?
If your airline flies the route from Hamilton, the dawn calculation is kinder: YHM is 15 km and 20–25 minutes from downtown, with a sedan at $90–115 each way. Check flyhamilton.ca for current routes, as they change by season. Our Hamilton airport YHM guide covers the terminal.
The hourly option for a dawn departure with stops
Occasionally a dawn trip has a stop in it: collecting a colleague in Oakville, dropping a car at a garage, or picking up a relative who lives near the airport. An hourly chauffeur at $120–145 per hour in a business sedan (3-hour minimum) covers the whole morning with one car, useful when the stops would otherwise mean two separate transfers at 3 a.m.
