Pearson security wait times are usually short, but they spike in the early-morning departure wave and at holiday peaks. Check the live figures on CATSA's wait-times page and Toronto Pearson's site the day you fly. From Hamilton, add a 45–65 minute drive (about 70 km), your airline's bag-drop cut-off and a screening buffer, then book the pickup time from that total.
How long are Pearson security wait times?
Pair this post with our Toronto Pearson airport guide to drop-off and pickup. On an ordinary day, security at Pearson moves quickly. The screening authority, CATSA, publishes live wait times by airport and checkpoint on its current wait times page, and Toronto Pearson shows its own estimates on torontopearson.com. CATSA reports that it works to a service-level target of screening the large majority of passengers within 15 minutes at Canada's biggest airports, averaged over the year. Averages hide peaks, though, and peaks are what matter when your pickup in Hamilton is set in advance. This post explains when those peaks happen, what else sits between the curb and the gate, and how to turn all of it into a pickup time.
When the lines get long
From the patterns travellers and our chauffeurs see at the departures curb, screening is busiest:
- About 5:00–8:00 a.m., when the first wave of domestic, US and sun flights leaves together.
- Late afternoon into the evening, when transatlantic and other long-haul departures board.
- The first days of March Break, the Christmas holidays and summer long weekends, when families with more bags and less practice fill the lanes.
- After a disruption — weather, a system outage or a staffing issue — when queues can build fast and unpredictably.
A mid-afternoon domestic flight on a Tuesday is the easy case. A 7 a.m. flight on the Friday of March Break is the hard one.
Security is only one of four queues
The screening line is the one people ask about, but the curb-to-gate time has four parts:
- Check-in and bag drop, which closes at your airline's cut-off. Miss it and screening speed does not matter.
- Security screening, the CATSA line.
- US preclearance for flights to the United States, which at Pearson happens before you board, so US-bound travellers clear US border procedures in Toronto.
- The walk to the gate, which can be long in a big terminal.
Pearson's two terminals are large, and gates at the far ends can take a while to reach. Tell us if a passenger will use airline wheelchair assistance; the airline arranges it inside, and it adds time.

Working backwards from your flight
Here is how our dispatch desk turns a flight time into a Hamilton pickup time:
- Start with departure time.
- Subtract the airline's recommended arrival time at the airport for your flight type — domestic, US or international. Airlines publish these; follow your own airline's guidance.
- Subtract the drive for that hour from your address: 45–65 minutes from downtown, more from Stoney Creek or the Mountain at peak.
- Subtract a weather buffer of 15–30 minutes if snow or a squall is forecast.
- Round down to the nearest quarter-hour.
Example timelines from downtown Hamilton
| Flight | Airline check-in guidance (example) | Drive plus buffer | Suggested pickup | Arrive at terminal |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 7:00 a.m. domestic, Tuesday | 2 hours before | 50 min + 10 | about 3:55 a.m. | about 4:55 a.m. |
| 11:00 a.m. to the US, Monday | 3 hours before (preclearance) | 60 min + 10 | about 6:50 a.m. | about 8:00 a.m. |
| 6:30 p.m. to Europe, Friday | 3 hours before | 70 min + 10 | about 2:10 p.m. | about 3:30 p.m. |
| 1:00 p.m. sun flight, March Break Saturday | 3 hours before | 50 min + 15 | about 8:55 a.m. | about 10:00 a.m. |
The check-in column is an illustration; use your own airline's figure. The drive column uses our hour-by-hour drive times. The fare is the same at any hour: $245–300 for a business sedan, all-in plus HST.
How to check security wait times on the day
- Look at the CATSA live wait times the evening before and again when you wake up.
- Check Toronto Pearson for terminal notices and any advisories.
- Check your airline's app for gate, delay and bag-drop information.
- If the numbers look unusual, message our dispatcher; we can move a pickup earlier while there is still a chauffeur to cover it.
What slows your own screening down
Much of the time you spend at security is under your control. Liquids in the wrong bag, laptops left in cases, belts, keys and coats all send trays back through. CATSA's what can I bring page lists the current rules; read it before packing, especially if you are travelling with medication, baby food or sports equipment. Families should put all the liquids for the children in one easy-to-reach bag.
Families, older travellers and first-timers
Add 15–30 minutes if you are travelling with small children, a car seat and a stroller to gate-check, an older parent who walks slowly, or a first-time flyer. The walk from the curb to the check-in desks, a family bathroom stop, and the screening itself all take longer. For these travellers we also suggest an executive SUV, so everything goes in one vehicle and the chauffeur unloads at the door nearest your airline. Child seats can be fitted at booking, a planning figure of $10–15 each.

Business travellers: less buffer, more certainty
Frequent flyers with carry-on only and a mobile boarding pass need less time at the airport, but they are also the travellers least willing to lose an hour to a slow drive. A chauffeur who has already chosen the 407 at 7 a.m. and knows the drop door for the airline gives back the margin the airport cannot. Many executives use a first-class sedan to take calls on the way, or book an hourly chauffeur when a meeting in Burlington or Mississauga comes before the flight.
The busiest days of the year at Pearson
Some dates are predictably heavy, and on those days every queue — the drive, the curb, check-in and screening — is longer at once. From our dispatch diary, the ones to plan around are the first Friday and Saturday of Ontario's March Break, the days either side of Christmas and New Year, the Thursday and Friday before the Victoria Day, Canada Day, Civic Holiday and Labour Day weekends, and the Sunday and Monday those weekends end. The Thanksgiving weekend in October and the start of the US Thanksgiving week also add transborder travellers. On those days, add 30 minutes to your normal plan and book early; dawn pickups are the first to fill.
Sports gear, medical devices and special items
Golf bags, skis, hockey bags, bikes and musical instruments usually go to an oversized-baggage counter, which is a separate step after check-in and can have its own queue. Travellers carrying medical devices, mobility aids or medication should read the screening guidance in advance and allow a few extra minutes for secondary screening. Tell our dispatcher about oversized items at booking, so the right vehicle comes — an executive SUV or luxury van for golf bags and skis — and the chauffeur can drop you at the door nearest the counter you need.
Leaving from Burlington, Ancaster or Stoney Creek
The pickup time moves with your address, because the drive does. From Burlington you are about 50 km and 35–50 minutes from the terminals, so you can leave later than downtown. From Ancaster or Dundas, about 75 km, and from Stoney Creek about 80 km and up to 80 minutes at weekday peak. Our Stoney Creek and Burlington pages have local pickup notes; the reservation engine sets the fare and suggested time for your exact street.
What arriving early actually buys you
Arriving with time in hand is not wasted. It is the margin that absorbs a bag that needs repacking at the desk, a longer screening line than the dashboard suggested, a gate change to the far end of the terminal, or a coffee and a quiet phone call before boarding. Most travellers who miss a flight from Hamilton do so because the plan had no slack at all, not because any single step was slow.
Ten-minute checklist the night before
- Confirm your terminal and flight time in the airline app.
- Check in online and download the boarding pass.
- Weigh the bags against your fare's allowance.
- Put liquids and electronics where you can reach them.
- Check the CATSA and Pearson wait times.
- Check the forecast on Environment Canada.
- Confirm your pickup time with the dispatcher's confirmation message.
- Keep passports and any travel documents in one place.
- Charge your phone.
- Set two alarms.
If the airline delays your flight before you leave home
A delay notification at 3 a.m. is tempting to act on, but be careful. Airlines sometimes recover part of a delay, and the bag-drop cut-off may still be tied to the original schedule. Check the airline's own advice before moving your pickup, and if it confirms a later check-in time, message our dispatcher to shift the car. Moving a pickup is free while we can still cover it. If the flight is cancelled and rebooked for another day, we re-time the car rather than charge a cancellation, as long as you tell us as soon as you know.
If you are running late on the day
If you are late leaving the house, tell the chauffeur at once. They know which route is fastest at that moment and where to drop you. Call your airline if you might miss the bag-drop cut-off; they are the only people who can tell you whether the flight can still be made or rebooked. Our fixed fare does not change, and a pickup that runs late because of the passenger is simply a later departure.
Booking a pickup timed for security
Book on HamiltonLimo.net's own engine with your flight number, and the dispatcher suggests a pickup time with the booking and confirms it the evening before. Early mornings fill first in March Break and the Christmas holidays, so book those early. See the Hamilton to Pearson route for fares by vehicle, or, for a stress-free start to a dawn flight, stay the night at one of the Pearson airport hotels.
