Cambridge to Hamilton is about 55 km, 40 to 50 minutes by car via Highway 401 and Highway 6, or via Highway 8 through Rockton and Dundas. There is no simple one-seat transit trip; public transit involves connections through Aldershot or Guelph. A private sedan booked direct is a planning $175–215 all-in plus HST, and an hourly chauffeur from $120–145 per hour.
Our Cambridge limo service page sets out the two driving routes and the fare table. This post is about choosing how to travel: when a bus connection is good enough, when driving yourself is fine, and when paying a chauffeur, by the trip or by the hour, is the better call for a Cambridge household.
Three ways to make the trip
| Way to travel | Door to door | Planning cost | Distance | Best when |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Private sedan, one way | 40–50 min | $175–215 all-in + HST | 55 km | Appointments, flights from YHM, nights out |
| Executive SUV or luxury van | 40–50 min | about $275–355 all-in + HST | 55 km | Families, 4–6 people |
| Hourly chauffeur, sedan | Your schedule | $120–145 per hour, 3 h minimum | Round trip plus stops | Hospital days, tours, several stops |
| Hourly Sprinter | Your schedule | $330–385 per hour, 3 h minimum | Round trip | Teams, wedding guests, tasting groups |
| Transit with connections | about 2–3 h | Transit fares | 55 km plus transfers | Solo, daytime, no luggage |
| Drive yourself | 40–50 min plus parking | Fuel and parking | 55 km | Anything simple in daylight |
Fares are planning ranges; the reservation engine quotes the exact addresses, date and vehicle, including chauffeur, fuel, tolls if used and gratuity, with HST shown separately.
Is there a bus from Cambridge to Hamilton?
Not a direct one. Cambridge has no GO train, and GO bus service from Cambridge runs mainly towards Mississauga. A transit trip to Hamilton usually means combining Grand River Transit with GO services and transferring at a hub such as Guelph or Aldershot, then using HSR inside Hamilton. Plan it on the GO Transit trip planner for the exact day, because the best connection changes with the time and the day of the week. Allow two to three hours.
For a student with time and a transit pass, that can be fine. For a hospital appointment, it rarely is.
Driving yourself: when it works
If you are comfortable on the 401 and Highway 6 and your destination has parking, drive. The places where Cambridge drivers tell us they gave up and booked a car instead are consistent:
- Hamilton hospital parking at peak times.
- Game days at Hamilton Stadium (the former Tim Hortons Field), where on-street parking disappears.
- Concerts at TD Coliseum downtown, with the late drive home.
- The escarpment descents in freezing rain.
- Any day that ends with drinks.
Route choice: 401 and Highway 6, or Highway 8
Chauffeurs pick on the day. From Hespeler and Preston, the 401 east to Highway 6 south is fastest, about 55 km. From south Galt, Highway 8 through Rockton and down into Dundas can be as quick and is more scenic, passing farmland and Christie Lake before the Dundas Valley. Your fixed fare doesn't change with the route. Traffic updates come from 511 Ontario.

Game days and concerts in Hamilton
Cambridge is Tiger-Cats territory for a lot of fans. For a home game, a common plan is a group of four in an SUV: pickup in Cambridge two hours before kickoff, drop-off near the stadium, and a pickup at a pre-agreed corner after the final whistle. Booked hourly for about 6 hours at $190–235 per hour, that is a planning $1,140–1,410 all-in plus HST, about $285–355 per person. Booked as two one-way trips, the SUV is roughly $290–355 each way, but the return pickup time after a game is harder to pin down. Our Tiger-Cats game guide explains where cars can stop on game nights.
Hospital and specialist visits
Cambridge Memorial Hospital handles most local care, but some patients are referred to Hamilton specialists, for example at Hamilton Health Sciences and St. Joseph's Healthcare. An hourly chauffeur is designed for this: the chauffeur drives you there, waits nearby, and brings you home, however long the appointment runs. A 4-hour sedan booking is a planning $480–580 all-in plus HST. Extra time is added in 30-minute blocks.
A few practical notes for these days:
- Tell us the hospital, building and entrance at booking, not just the street address.
- Bring the clinic's phone number; appointments move.
- If sedation is involved, confirm your clinic's rules about who may take you home.
What the chauffeur does while you are inside
People ask what happens during the waiting hours. The chauffeur parks as close as the hospital allows, keeps the car ready, and stays reachable through dispatch. When you are ready, the car comes to the same entrance where you were dropped. If a test is added and you need another hour, tell dispatch; the booking extends in 30-minute blocks, and nothing about the return has to be rearranged.
Older parents and passengers with limited mobility
Many searches for this route come from adult children arranging a trip for a parent. Chauffeurs help passengers in and out, carry bags, and fold and stow a wheelchair or walker for anyone who can transfer to a seat. Our own fleet has no ramp-equipped vehicles; if your parent must travel seated in a wheelchair, we will refer you to a specialist accessible provider. A regular booking on the same weekday, with the same pickup notes each time, makes the routine easier for everyone. Our guide to transportation for elderly parents covers the family side of planning.
Winter on the escarpment descents
Both routes into Hamilton drop down the Niagara Escarpment: Highway 6 through Clappison's Corners towards the 403, or Highway 8 down into Dundas. In freezing rain these are the slowest parts of the trip, and the upper-city approaches to the Mountain hospitals, the Jolley Cut, Claremont Access and James Mountain Road, can back up in snow. Chauffeurs check Environment Canada the night before and will suggest leaving 20 to 30 minutes earlier. For a hospital day that is worth building in from the start.
A family visiting grandparents in Hamilton
Two parents, three children and a grandmother's birthday lunch in Stoney Creek: this is a luxury van trip. Six seats, six bags, car seats fitted before pickup at a planning $10–15 each. Booked hourly for 5 hours at the executive SUV and van rate of $190–235 per hour, that is a planning $950–1,175 all-in plus HST, and the adults can have a glass of wine at lunch. Booked as two one-way van trips, it is about $265–325 each way, plus the local leg across Hamilton.
Flights from Hamilton airport
John C. Munro Hamilton International Airport (YHM) in Mount Hope is about 60 km from Cambridge, 45 to 55 minutes, planning $190–230 in a sedan. For routes that fly from there, it is a much calmer departure than Pearson. Check flyhamilton.ca for current routes; they change by season. Our Hamilton airport guide covers timing and terminal details.
A Hamilton day out from Cambridge, by the hour
Hamilton is worth a day, and an hourly car makes it easy to do properly. A sample 6-hour sedan day, planning $720–870 all-in plus HST:
- 10 am: pickup in Cambridge; Highway 8 towards Dundas.
- 10:40 am: Webster's Falls and the Spencer Gorge lookout (check the conservation authority for access rules first).
- 12 pm: lunch on Locke Street or James Street North.
- 1:30 pm: Art Gallery of Hamilton or Dundurn National Historic Site.
- 3:30 pm: the waterfront at Bayfront Park or Pier 4.
- 4 pm: home to Cambridge.
Our Hamilton city and waterfall tours page lists more routes, and the Hamilton Conservation Authority has current rules for its waterfall areas.

Weddings that cross the two cities
Many couples have one family in Cambridge and a ceremony or reception in Hamilton, or the reverse. A single Sprinter or an executive SUV shuttling guests between a Cambridge hotel and a Hamilton venue saves everyone the drive home after the reception. Stretch limousines for the wedding party come from vetted partner operators, and multi-vehicle weddings are priced in writing by a coordinator. See our wedding limo page for how we plan the day.
Students and commuters
Students at McMaster or Mohawk College who live in Cambridge usually drive or take transit. A car makes sense on move-in and move-out days, when a luxury van carries six passengers and six bags or a smaller group with boxes. A daily commute by chauffeur is not realistic for most people, and we will say so; the hourly service is built for occasional days, not five days a week.
Heading the other way: Hamilton to Cambridge
Hamilton residents book this route to reach Cambridge family, the Grand River trails, and events in Waterloo Region. It also works as the first leg of a trip to Waterloo airport in Breslau. Fares are the same in both directions. For the wider trip, see the Hamilton to Kitchener-Waterloo route. Visitors staying overnight can compare our downtown Hamilton hotels.
Which vehicle for which trip
- One or two people, an appointment or a flight: a business sedan, three seats and three bags.
- Up to five people, or winter roads: a Business SUV, five seats and five bags; a black Tahoe or Yukon at close to sedan money, about $230–280 one way.
- A special occasion or an important client: a first-class sedan, about 2.5 times the sedan rate.
- Families, four to six adults, golf bags or a wheelchair to stow: an executive SUV or luxury van, about 50 to 65 per cent more than a sedan.
- Seven to fourteen people: a Sprinter, a planning $330–385 per hour with a 3-hour minimum.
- A VIP group of up to seven: a Jet Sprinter, a lounge Sprinter with captain's chairs and work tables, a planning $650–750 per hour.
- Stretch limousines, party buses and coaches: supplied by vetted partner operators and priced in writing by a coordinator.
Planning mistakes to avoid
- Assuming a direct bus exists; check the trip planner first.
- Booking one way for a hospital day and hoping to find a ride home.
- Driving down for a concert and planning to drive back after drinks.
- Choosing a sedan for four adults; book an SUV or van for comfort.
- Forgetting the Linc and Upper James are slow at shift change near the Mountain hospitals.
Nights out in Hamilton from Cambridge
Hamilton's restaurant and bar streets, James Street North, Locke Street and Augusta Street, are a common Friday destination for Cambridge groups. The drive home is the part that needs planning. A one-way sedan home is a planning $175–215; four friends in an SUV booked hourly for five hours pay about $950–1,175 in total and have the car waiting. Our post on a limo for a night out in Hamilton has evening plans.
