Guelph to Hamilton is about 60 km, 45 to 55 minutes by car on Highway 6 through Puslinch and Flamborough. Without a car, the main public option is a GO bus that links Guelph with Aldershot, Hamilton GO Centre and McMaster on weekdays; check GO Transit for current times. A private sedan booked direct is a planning $200–245 all-in plus HST.
Our Guelph limo service page describes the Highway 6 drive itself and lists every fare from Guelph. This post is for people who make the trip without their own car: students moving between the University of Guelph and McMaster, patients heading to Hamilton's hospitals, fans going to a concert or a game, and older residents who no longer want to drive the escarpment in winter.

Taking the GO bus from Guelph to Hamilton
GO Transit runs a bus route that connects Waterloo and Guelph (with stops at Guelph Central Station and the University of Guelph) with Aldershot GO, Hamilton GO Centre and McMaster University. It has operated on weekdays with roughly hourly trips. Service changes, so confirm the current route number, stops and times on GO Transit before you rely on it. From Hamilton GO Centre, local HSR buses cover the rest of the city.
The bus is the right choice for a student with a backpack going between campuses on a Wednesday. It is harder for a 7:30 am hospital check-in, for a Saturday, for anyone who struggles with steps and transfers, or for the ride home after a late concert.
When a private car makes more sense
- Early or late: a 6 am surgical check-in or a concert ending at 11 pm.
- Weekends and holidays: when bus service is thin or absent.
- Door to door: you are going somewhere the bus does not stop, such as the Juravinski Hospital on the Mountain.
- Mobility: a walker, a wheelchair that folds, or a passenger recovering from surgery.
- Groups: four people splitting an SUV pay about $80–100 each.
Hospital days in Hamilton: book hourly, not one-way
Guelph patients are often referred to Hamilton for specialist care at Hamilton Health Sciences sites such as the Juravinski, Hamilton General and McMaster Children's, or at St. Joseph's Healthcare. Appointments run late, tests get added, and the patient may not be fit to take a bus home.
That is exactly what an hourly chauffeur service is for. The chauffeur drives you from Guelph, waits nearby while you are inside, and brings you home when you are done. A business sedan is a planning $120–145 per hour, 3-hour minimum. A typical 4-hour booking, including both drives and a 2-hour appointment, is a planning $480–580 all-in plus HST. Compare that with two one-way fares of $200–245 each and the uncertainty of booking the return before you know when you'll finish. Our guides on rides after day surgery and medical appointment transportation go into more detail.

A hospital day, step by step
- 6:15 am: pickup in Guelph; the chauffeur helps with the bag and the walker.
- 7:10 am: drop-off at the hospital's main entrance on the Mountain, 30 minutes before check-in.
- 7:15 am to 11 am: the chauffeur parks nearby and waits; you or a family member text when you are ready.
- 11:10 am: pickup at the same door; a stop at a pharmacy on the way out.
- 12:15 pm: home in Guelph.
About 6 hours, a planning $720–870 all-in plus HST, and nobody in the family had to take a day off work.
Students moving between Guelph and McMaster
Graduate students, co-op students and researchers split between the University of Guelph and McMaster make this trip often. Most use the bus. The exceptions are moving days, when a student has a term's worth of belongings, and lab days with equipment. A luxury van carries six passengers and six bags, or two people with a lot of boxes. For a group of visiting researchers doing both campuses in a day, an hourly Sprinter at a planning $330–385 per hour keeps everyone together.
Game nights and concerts in Hamilton
Guelph fans come down for Tiger-Cats games at Hamilton Stadium (the former Tim Hortons Field) and concerts at TD Coliseum. The drive down is easy. The drive home at 11 pm, after a few drinks, is the problem. Options:
- A one-way car each way, planning $200–245 per leg in a sedan.
- An hourly booking for the whole evening, with the chauffeur waiting near the venue. Four people in an SUV at $190–235 per hour for 6 hours is a planning $1,140–1,410, about $285–355 each.
- The GO bus down and a car home, if the schedules line up.
See our concert and game day limo page for pickup points near each venue.
Hamilton airport from Guelph
John C. Munro Hamilton International Airport in Mount Hope is about 65 km from Guelph, 50 to 60 minutes, a planning $200–245 in a sedan. Some leisure and domestic routes fly from there; check flyhamilton.ca for what is current. It is a quieter airport than Pearson, with short walks from curb to gate. Our Hamilton airport limo page covers where cars stop.
What the drive looks like, for passengers
You will head south on the Hanlon Expressway, cross the 401, and pass through farmland around Morriston and Freelton. In Flamborough the road descends the Niagara Escarpment towards Highway 403, with views over the city and the harbour on a clear day. The two-lane sections are slow behind farm machinery in harvest season, and snow drifts across open fields in winter; chauffeurs plan for both. For weather, see Environment Canada.
Older residents who have stopped driving
Adult children often search this route because a parent in Guelph needs to reach a specialist in Hamilton, or a parent in Hamilton wants to visit family in Guelph. A regular booking, the same day each week or month, works well. The chauffeur walks the passenger to the door and back, carries bags, and can fold and stow a wheelchair or walker for passengers who can transfer to a seat. Our fleet has no ramp-equipped vehicles, so passengers who must stay seated in a wheelchair need a specialist accessible provider. Our post on transportation for elderly parents is written for families organising this.

The hidden legs of the bus trip
The GO bus itself is quick. The time goes on the pieces around it. From a house in south Guelph you may need a Guelph Transit bus or a walk to the stop. At the Hamilton end, the bus reaches Hamilton GO Centre downtown and McMaster in the west end, but many destinations, including the Mountain hospitals, Mohawk College, Ancaster and Stoney Creek, need a second bus on the HSR network. Add waiting time at each connection and a 45-minute drive can become a two-hour trip each way.
That is fine for a student with a free afternoon. It is a real problem for someone who has fasted before a procedure, or who has to be at a 7 am check-in.
Mistakes people make on the Guelph–Hamilton trip
- Booking the ride home before the appointment ends. Hospital schedules slip. Book hourly, or leave the return open and call dispatch when you are ready, accepting that a same-day return depends on availability.
- Assuming weekend buses. Check GO Transit for Saturday and Sunday service before planning a weekend visit.
- Forgetting parking. Hospital and stadium parking in Hamilton is limited and paid; being dropped at the door avoids it.
- Driving yourself after sedation. Many clinics require a responsible adult to take you home after a procedure with sedation; a taxi or bus may not be accepted. Ask your clinic what it requires.
- Underestimating winter. The open stretches of Highway 6 between Morriston and Clappison's Corners drift quickly in a west wind.
How far ahead to book
For weekday medical appointments, a few days is usually enough; for a 6 am pickup, book at least the day before so a chauffeur is scheduled. For Tiger-Cats home games, big TD Coliseum concerts, convocation week at McMaster in June and the university move-in weekends, book a week or more ahead, because the same cars are in demand across the region. Our post on how far in advance to book a limo has a full calendar of busy dates.
Staying overnight in Hamilton
For a two-day hospital stay by a family member, or an early exam, a hotel near the destination can beat two long drives. Our downtown Hamilton hotels and Ancaster and Mountain hotels pages describe where cars stop at each lobby.
Coming the other way
Hamilton residents heading to Guelph for a University of Guelph event, a family visit or a day in Elora book the same car in reverse; fares are the same. The Hamilton to Kitchener-Waterloo route covers the neighbouring trip, and Guelph flyers should read Guelph to Pearson.
Regular trips for the same passenger
When a Guelph resident needs the same trip every week, for physiotherapy, clinic follow-ups or a standing family visit, a recurring booking saves everyone time. Book the series in advance, keep the pickup notes the same, and let dispatch know as early as possible if a date moves. The standard cancellation terms still apply to each trip, measured from its scheduled pickup.
Book direct
Book on the HamiltonLimo.net reservation engine with both addresses and your times. For hourly bookings, choose the hours you expect and add more in 30-minute blocks on the day if an appointment runs long. Cancellation is free until 72 hours before pickup; 10 % applies inside 72 hours, 50 % inside 48 hours and 100 % inside 24 hours or for a no-show.
