Private jets at Hamilton airport (YHM) use a fixed-base operator on the Mount Hope airfield, not the passenger terminal; Onward Aviation lists itself as a 24/7 full-service FBO at 9300 Airport Road. Send dispatch the tail number, FBO and estimated block time and the car waits at the FBO. Downtown Hamilton is 15 km and 20–25 minutes; a business sedan is $90–115, all-in plus HST.
Hamilton airport FBO: when YHM is the right choice
Our Hamilton airport private jet car service page explains the mechanics at the FBO: tail-number tracking, ramp access, customs and crew cars. This post answers the questions that come before and after: should your flight use Hamilton or Pearson at all, what exactly should an assistant send us, and what does a typical private arrival look like when the reason for the trip is golf, wine country or a board meeting rather than Toronto?
The short answer on choice: YHM wins whenever the destination is west or south of Burlington. Hamilton, Ancaster, Dundas, Brantford, Niagara and the Twenty Valley are all closer to Mount Hope than to Pearson, and the drive avoids the 403 and QEW corridor through Mississauga and Oakville completely. For principals whose trip ends in the west end of the Golden Horseshoe, that can mean an hour back in the day, each way.
YHM versus Pearson: drive times to where principals actually go
Planning figures, one way, from the airfield, all-in plus HST.
| Destination | From YHM FBO | Sedan from YHM | From Pearson FBO | Sedan from Pearson |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Downtown Hamilton | 15 km, 20–25 min | $90–115 | 70 km, 45–65 min | $245–300 |
| Ancaster / McMaster area | 12–15 km, 15–20 min | $75–100 | 75 km, 50–70 min | $255–315 |
| Burlington | 30 km, 25–35 min | $105–140 | 55 km, 35–50 min | $200–245 |
| Oakville | 50 km, 35–45 min | $165–200 | 35 km, 25–40 min | $150–190 |
| Niagara-on-the-Lake | 65 km, 45–55 min | $220–270 | 120 km, 80–100 min | $375–465 |
| Downtown Toronto | 75 km, 55–75 min | $270–330 | quoted by the engine | quoted by the engine |
The pattern is clear: Oakville is roughly a draw, and anything east of Oakville favours Pearson or Billy Bishop. For the Pearson side, see private jet to Toronto: Pearson FBO pickups.
What an assistant or broker should send dispatch
One message with these details saves a morning of phone calls:
- Tail number and aircraft type.
- Departure airport and the crew's estimated time of arrival (block-in).
- FBO at YHM; if unknown, the operator's name so we can confirm it.
- Passenger names, the lead passenger's mobile, and how many bags, including golf bags, ski cases or wine boxes on the way home.
- International or domestic. International arrivals wait for CBSA clearance; see the CANPASS Private Aircraft programme the crew uses.
- The day's plan: one transfer, or an hourly car for the whole visit.
- Sign board preference: name, company, trip name or none.
A typical golf weekend from Mount Hope
A party of four lands from the US on a Friday afternoon for two rounds and a dinner in wine country.
- Friday 2:10 pm — Block-in at the FBO. International arrival, so up to 60 minutes of included waiting from block-in while clearance completes.
- 2:45 pm — Executive SUV loads four sets of clubs and bags. Planning range for the transfer to an Ancaster hotel: $125–155.
- Saturday 7:15 am — Hourly SUV, 3-hour minimum or longer: hotel to a course around Ancaster or Dundas, chauffeur waits, lunch, back. A 6-hour SUV day is $1,140–1,410.
- Saturday 5:30 pm — Hourly SUV to Niagara-on-the-Lake for dinner and a tasting (about 65 km, 45–55 minutes), back by 11 pm. Roughly 5.5 hours, $1,045–1,295.
- Sunday 1:00 pm — Back to the FBO for wheels-up.
For course days, our golf day with a chauffeur post covers the timing of tee times and clubhouse pickups.

A board-meeting day that never goes near Toronto
A principal flies in at 8:00 am, attends a board meeting in downtown Hamilton, tours a facility in Stoney Creek and has a late lunch in Dundas before an afternoon departure. That is an hourly chauffeur booking of about 7 hours in a first-class sedan, $1,995–2,450 all-in plus HST, with the car at the FBO door for both ends. Landing at Pearson instead would add roughly 110 km of highway and two hours of driving to the same day.
Wine country arrivals in harvest season
September and October bring visitors flying in for the Niagara harvest. From YHM, Niagara-on-the-Lake is 65 km and 45–55 minutes by the Linc, the Red Hill Valley Parkway and the QEW, against 120 km and 80–100 minutes from Pearson. An hourly SUV or first-class sedan for a day of tastings, with the chauffeur waiting at each winery, is covered on our Niagara wine country page. Weekends in harvest season are busy on the QEW near St. Catharines; start early.

Where to stay after landing at YHM
Ancaster and the Mountain are 15–20 minutes from the airfield and suit golf and business visitors; downtown Hamilton suits a TD Coliseum event or dinner on James Street North; Niagara-on-the-Lake suits wine weekends. Our Ancaster and Mountain hotels and Niagara-on-the-Lake pages cover lobby pickups.
If the aircraft diverts
Weather or a slot change occasionally sends a Hamilton-bound aircraft to Pearson, or the reverse. The dispatcher moves the car to the new FBO and prices the new address rather than charging for an empty run. What helps: the crew's number or the broker's, so we hear about the diversion before the chauffeur is standing at the wrong fence.
Families flying privately into Hamilton
Families travelling privately bring different needs: car seats, strollers, more bags and a schedule set by children. Child seats (infant, convertible or booster) are available on request at a planning figure of $10–15 each; add them at booking with the children's ages so the right seats are fitted before the car reaches the FBO. A luxury van with a sliding door is easier than an SUV for loading small children, and it carries six with bags. Destinations like African Lion Safari in Flamborough or a day at the waterfalls sit 20–40 minutes from the airfield, which makes a Hamilton landing far kinder than a Pearson one for a family weekend.
Departures: getting back to the FBO on time
The return is set by the crew, not an airline. Ask the crew or broker for the time passengers should be at the FBO, then give dispatch the pickup address and that time; the chauffeur works backwards from it with live traffic. From downtown Hamilton allow 20–25 minutes, from Niagara-on-the-Lake 45–55 minutes, and more on a Friday afternoon on the QEW. If the principal is on an hourly booking, the car simply ends the day at the FBO door, bags already in the trunk, and nobody has to book a separate transfer.
Winter at an open airfield
Mount Hope sits on open farmland above the escarpment, and in winter it catches blowing snow that the lower city never sees. Upper James Street and the Linc can drift over while downtown is merely wet. Our cars run winter tires from November to April, and on a storm day the chauffeur leaves earlier for the FBO rather than risk the principal waiting in the lounge. The route down into the lower city also matters: the Mountain accesses ice first, so the chauffeur picks whichever one is moving, often the Red Hill Valley Parkway or the 403.
Adding a Toronto meeting to a Hamilton trip
Some principals land at YHM for a Hamilton visit and then need one meeting in downtown Toronto. From the airfield that is about 75 km and 55–75 minutes, $270–330 in a business sedan one way, or simply part of an hourly day. Leave Hamilton after 9:30 am to miss the worst of the eastbound peak, and return before 3:30 pm. If Toronto is the main event, a Pearson or Billy Bishop landing is the better plan.
Repeat visitors and a named chauffeur
Principals who fly into Hamilton every month benefit from the same chauffeur each time. Ask for a named chauffeur on a private chauffeur arrangement and the preferences, routes and FBO routine carry over from one visit to the next.
Crew nights in Hamilton
When the aircraft stays overnight, the crew needs a hotel run and an early return. Tie crew bookings to duty times, one-way each way; a sedan to an Ancaster or Mountain hotel is $75–100, and a Sprinter handles a larger crew and passengers together.
Paperwork for flight departments
Flight departments and brokers usually want ground transport documented alongside the trip. Each confirmation shows the booking reference, vehicle, passengers, pickup address at the FBO, the fixed all-in fare and HST on its own line. Receipts can be issued to the company, the trip reference or the passenger. Regular users can open a corporate account so all ground legs for the month arrive on one statement.
Mistakes that cost time at the FBO
- Sending a flight time, not a block time. The crew's estimate is what we track.
- Booking the passenger terminal address. The FBO is on the other side of the field.
- Forgetting the golf bags. Four players and four bags do not fit a sedan; book an SUV.
- Assuming planeside access. It is the FBO's decision; ask us to confirm it.
Why YHM works for business aviation
The airport's own site, flyhamilton.ca, focuses on the passenger terminal; for the ramp, the FBO is the contact, and Onward Aviation publishes its services. Hamilton is a busy overnight cargo airport with far less daytime passenger congestion than Pearson, which many operators like. Business aviation groups such as the Canadian Business Aviation Association publish guidance for operators; we simply make sure the car is ready.
