Region of Waterloo International Airport (YKF) is a small, regionally owned airport in Breslau, beside Highway 401 just east of Kitchener. From downtown Hamilton it is about 70 km and 50–65 minutes via Highway 6 and the 401; from Waterdown about 55 km. When we checked on 30 September 2026 it listed Air Canada, WestJet, Flair and Sunwing. A Waterloo airport car from downtown is $220–270 by sedan, all-in plus HST.
Region of Waterloo International Airport: the basics
Region of Waterloo International Airport, code YKF, is owned by the Region of Waterloo and sits in Breslau on Fountain Street North, beside Highway 401, just east of Kitchener and north of Cambridge. It has one passenger terminal and short walking distances. The airport's own website listed Air Canada, WestJet, Flair Airlines and Sunwing as airline partners when we checked on 30 September 2026, with domestic flights and seasonal sun routes. Which carrier flies where changes by season, and some routes operate only a few days a week, so always confirm your flight with the airline. For Hamilton travellers, YKF is a useful third or fourth option, and for anyone living in Waterdown, Flamborough or the northwest of the city it can be surprisingly convenient. Our parent page on the Waterloo airport limo covers pickups and waiting; this post answers when YKF is the right call.
YKF compared with Hamilton airport and Pearson
Planning ranges, one way, business sedan, all-in plus HST.
| Airport | From downtown Hamilton | From Waterdown / Flamborough | Business sedan from downtown | Character |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Hamilton (YHM) | 15 km, 20–25 min | about 25–30 km | $90–115 | Closest; check routes on flyhamilton.ca |
| Waterloo (YKF) | 70 km, 50–65 min | 55 km, 40–50 min | $220–270 | Small terminal, 401 access, seasonal sun routes |
| Toronto Pearson (YYZ) | about 70 km, 45–65 min | about 60 km | $245–300 | The widest choice of routes |
From Waterdown, YKF is $180–225 by sedan as a planning range, and from Ancaster or Dundas about $205–255 (65 km, 45–60 minutes). The reservation engine prices your exact address.
When YKF makes sense for Hamilton travellers
- The flight you want is there. A sun package or a domestic route that Hamilton does not serve on your dates, at a better price or time than Pearson.
- You live on the north or west side. From Waterdown, Carlisle or Flamborough, Breslau can be closer in time than Pearson at rush hour.
- You dislike big terminals. A single small terminal with short walks appeals to older travellers and families with young children.
- Your trip starts in Waterloo Region anyway, such as a family visit in Kitchener or a student at the University of Waterloo, Laurier or Conestoga.
When it does not
- Hamilton airport already has your route. YHM is 15 km away; there is no reason to drive 70.
- You need frequency and choice. Pearson's schedule gives more options if plans change.
- Long-haul or connecting trips, which usually route through a major hub anyway.
- Stormy winter mornings, when Highway 6 through Puslinch and the 401 near Cambridge can be slower than the QEW.

The drive: Highway 6, the 401 and Fountain Street
From the lower city, the chauffeur usually takes the 403 to Highway 6 north, through Flamborough and past the African Lion Safari turn-off, then the 401 westbound to the Breslau exit and the airport on Fountain Street North. From Ancaster and Dundas, a westerly route toward Cambridge can join the 401 further along. The slow points are the Highway 6 and 401 interchange area near Puslinch and the 401 through Cambridge at weekday peaks. The region sits in a snow belt, so a clear morning in Hamilton can mean blowing snow on Highway 6; chauffeurs check Ontario 511 before leaving.
A real departure timeline
A family of four from Waterdown, 8:30 a.m. sun flight, checked bags:
- 5:15 a.m. Pickup in an executive SUV with a booster seat installed (planning figure $10–15, added at booking).
- 6:00 a.m. Departures curb at YKF, 40–50 minutes later. The chauffeur unloads; the car does not park.
- 6:00–7:00 a.m. Check-in and bag drop, then security at a small airport.
- Return, a week later. The flight is tracked from departure, and 60 minutes of waiting is included from actual landing on the international sun arrival, covering customs and bags for a full aircraft.
That return window, then 15-minute blocks, is the detail that makes a booked car calmer than hoping for a ride at a small airport at night.
Arriving at YKF: what to expect
For arrivals, the fare includes curbside pickup in the terminal's commercial pickup area; the chauffeur messages you the car, plate and position once you land. Included waiting from actual landing is 30 minutes on Canadian domestic and US flights and 60 minutes on other international arrivals, then 15-minute blocks. Meet & greet with a name board is an add-on at a planning figure of $25–35. We are not aware of a scheduled shuttle between Hamilton and YKF; check the airport's ground transportation information and Grand River Transit for local connections within Waterloo Region.

Business visitors: YKF plus a day in Waterloo Region
YKF is also a working airport for the Waterloo Region tech and manufacturing corridor. A visitor landing for meetings in Waterloo, Kitchener, Cambridge and Guelph, with a dinner in Hamilton, is the ideal case for our hourly chauffeur service: one car and one chauffeur from the terminal, waiting at every stop, bags locked in the trunk. A business sedan is $120–145 per hour and a first-class sedan $285–350, 3-hour minimum, all-in plus HST; a 4-hour sedan day is $480–580. Overnight guests can compare lobbies on our Kitchener-Waterloo hotels page and our post on hotels in Waterloo.
Students, move-in week and family visits
Many YKF passengers are students and parents. Move-in week brings families flying in with a year of luggage, and convocation brings grandparents from across the country. A Sprinter takes up to 14 people and 14 bags; an SUV takes six and six. An hourly booking lets a family collect a student, move them in and go for dinner without separate rides. Our university and campus visits page explains how those days are planned, and our Kitchener-Waterloo and Cambridge pages cover other rides in the region.
Parking at YKF vs a booked car
A regional airport usually has simpler parking than Pearson, and some Hamilton travellers drive themselves to Breslau. Check the current rates on the airport's website, then add fuel for about 140 km round trip and the drive home after the return flight. For a family returning from a sun trip on a late-evening arrival, the 70 km home via the 401 and Highway 6, often in winter, is the leg people most regret. A booked car both ways avoids it, and the flight is tracked so a delayed return costs nothing extra in waiting beyond the included window.
YKF for visitors coming to Hamilton
The airport also works in reverse. Visitors flying into YKF for a wedding in Flamborough, a family event in Waterdown or a visit to African Lion Safari are closer to their destination than they would be at Pearson. From the terminal, the chauffeur heads for the 401 and Highway 6 south; Waterdown is about 40–50 minutes away. Guests staying in Burlington hotels or downtown Hamilton hotels can book the transfer straight to the lobby, and our page on Waterdown and Flamborough covers local rides once they have arrived.
Winter at a snow-belt airport
YKF sits in a part of Ontario that often sees more snow than Hamilton's lakeshore, and airlines de-ice aircraft there in winter. Delays follow. On the ground, we plan departures conservatively on forecast storm days and message you the evening before if the pickup should move earlier; Environment Canada forecasts and Ontario 511 are our references. For arrivals, flight tracking absorbs weather delays automatically. If you have a tight onward commitment, such as a morning meeting in Hamilton after an evening arrival, tell the dispatcher so the plan has a margin.
Groups and teams
Waterloo Region hosts hockey tournaments, robotics competitions and conferences, and teams often fly into YKF together. One Sprinter moves 14 people and their bags in one vehicle; two cover 28. Hockey bags and sticks are bulky, so tell us the count at booking. Larger groups can have a coach from a vetted partner operator in the LimousineWorldwide.Directory network, priced in writing by a coordinator.
Our dispatcher's quick answer
When Hamilton clients ask whether to fly from Breslau, we ask where they live and what the flight is. From Waterdown, Carlisle or Flamborough, with a good fare on a route YKF serves, the answer is usually yes: the drive is shorter than the QEW to Pearson and the terminal is calm. From Stoney Creek or Grimsby, Pearson or Hamilton airport is usually closer in time, and YKF only makes sense for a clearly better fare. From downtown, it is a genuine toss-up that the flight time decides. We quote YKF, Pearson and YHM at fixed fares from the same desk, so comparing the ground side takes a minute on the booking page before you buy tickets.
If your flight is diverted or cancelled
Weather at small airports can divert a flight to Pearson or Hamilton. Because every pickup is tied to a flight number, the chauffeur is sent to the new airport and the fare is adjusted to that airport rather than charging for an empty trip to Breslau. A cancelled flight is not a no-show; message dispatch and the pickup is rebooked for the new flight. For the Pearson alternative from the region, see our post on Kitchener to Pearson airport.
