A rideshare "round trip" is really two separate one-way rides: a new request, a new driver and a new price for the way back. A wait-and-return booking keeps one car and chauffeur for the visit. For long stays, two booked one-way fares usually cost less; for short, uncertain, late or remote visits, an hourly booking from $120–145 an hour is the safer choice.
Uber round trip: what actually happens
Rideshare apps are designed around single trips, unlike a chauffeured car booked hourly or point to point. You can schedule a ride in advance in many markets, and you can add a stop, but there is no true round trip in which the same driver waits while you spend an hour inside. What people call an "Uber round trip" is two requests: one there, and one back when you are done. The second ride is priced at the time you request it, may take a while to arrive in a quiet area, and comes with whichever driver accepts. Check Uber's own help pages for the current scheduling and waiting rules, which change from market to market.
That is fine for a lot of trips. It is less fine when the return is the part that matters: a ride home from a hospital, from a rural wedding venue, or from Pearson at midnight. Our guide to hourly vs point-to-point car service explains the two ways a chauffeured car is booked; this post is about the return leg specifically.
Three ways to do a round trip with a booked car
- Two booked one-way rides. A fixed fare there and a fixed fare back, each with its own pickup time. The return can be booked open, and you call when you are ready.
- A one-way ride with waiting. For short visits, the chauffeur waits: 15 minutes are included at the pickup, then waiting is added in 15-minute blocks, priced by the engine before you confirm.
- An hourly booking. The car and chauffeur are yours for the visit and the drives, 3-hour minimum, extra time in 30-minute blocks.
Which is cheapest depends almost entirely on how long you will be at the destination.
The real cost: five Hamilton round trips compared

What the numbers say
On pure cost, two one-way fares win every row, because paying a chauffeur to wait for hours is expensive. That is the honest answer, and it is why we never push an hourly booking for a single long visit.
The picture changes when you add what the fare does not show. The Burlington clinic appointment might run 45 minutes or two hours. The YHM flight might land early or late. The Toronto meeting might end at 3:00 p.m. or 5:30 p.m., straight into rush hour on the QEW. A wedding in wine country ends at midnight, far from the nearest taxi. In each case, a booked return with an open time, or a car that waits, is worth more than the saving.

When two one-way fares are the right answer
Book two one-way rides when:
- you will be at the destination for more than about 90 minutes;
- you know roughly when you will be done, or can give 30 minutes' notice;
- the destination is somewhere a pickup is easy, such as a hotel, an office tower or a hospital's main entrance;
- only one or two people are travelling and there is little to carry.
Book the return as an open pickup if you are not sure of the time, and call or text dispatch when you are ready. It is still a fixed fare; only the time is left open.
When the car should wait
Keep the car, by the hour or with waiting blocks, when:
- the visit is short, under about an hour, and you want to leave the moment it ends;
- the return is from somewhere hard to leave: a rural venue, a winery, a trailhead, a cemetery;
- the passenger needs help in and out, such as after a procedure or with a walker;
- there are bags, shopping or a car seat that should stay in the car;
- the return is late at night, when a car on demand is least certain.
Hospital and clinic visits: the most common round trip
Most wait-and-return bookings we run are medical: a scan, a specialist visit, a blood test, a procedure. The appointment time is fixed; the end time is not. If a family member is going in for day surgery, the return is the important leg, and hospitals usually need to know who is taking the patient home.
For a short visit to Juravinski, Hamilton General, McMaster Children's or St. Joseph's, a one-way ride with waiting blocks is often right. For a longer day, book the drop-off and an open return. For a day with a pharmacy and a meal on the way home, book three hours. The sibling post on getting a ride home after day surgery covers what hospitals ask of escorts, and the medical appointments page covers pickup points at each hospital. Hamilton Health Sciences and St. Joseph's Healthcare publish parking and entrance information.

Airport round trips: dropping off and collecting family
A classic family round trip is not for the traveller but for the relative who wants to meet them. Driving to the airport to collect someone and bringing them home is two legs with a wait in the middle that depends on the flight. We track every flight, so there is a simpler way: book a single airport pickup for the arriving passenger. The fare includes 30 minutes of waiting after Canadian domestic and US flights, 60 minutes after other international arrivals, from actual landing. Nobody has to sit in a cell-phone lot.
If you want to go along to greet them, book the pickup from your home with the airport as a stop, or keep a car by the hour. The Hamilton airport YHM page explains the curbside pickup area.
Toronto meetings: the return is the problem
A Toronto meeting from Hamilton is the round trip where people most often regret booking only the way in. Downtown Toronto is about 68 km and 50–75 minutes from downtown Hamilton, and the return between 3:30 and 6:30 p.m. can be longer. If the meeting ends early, a pre-booked return can often be moved forward; if it runs late, a car on demand from the financial district at 5:00 p.m. is slow and expensive.
For a single meeting, book two one-way rides and give the return an open time. For two or more meetings, or a meeting plus lunch, the hourly booking wins. The Hamilton to downtown Toronto route page also compares the GO train honestly.
Weddings and events in wine country
Guests at a wedding on the Beamsville Bench or in Niagara-on-the-Lake face the hardest return of all: late at night, rural roads, and very few taxis. A rideshare request at midnight from a winery can take a long time to be accepted, if it is accepted at all.
Book the return in advance. For a couple of guests, a booked one-way at a set time, say 11:30 p.m., costs $125–155 back to Hamilton from Grimsby or Beamsville. For a group, a Sprinter doing one or two runs to the hotels is kinder and often cheaper per person. The Niagara wine tours page covers the region's roads and distances.
The hidden costs of a rideshare round trip
It is worth naming the costs that do not appear on either fare:
- The wait for the return car, which is dead time in a lobby or at a curb.
- Demand pricing at the moment you request the return, especially after events.
- A different vehicle each way, which matters if you need a car seat or more luggage space.
- Nobody to help with a walker, bags or a sleepy child.
- The chance of no car at all in quiet areas late at night.
None of this makes rideshare wrong. It makes it a gamble on the return leg, and you should decide whether that gamble is worth the saving for your trip.
Late-night returns: why pre-booking matters most
The later the return, the stronger the case for booking it before you leave home. After midnight, fewer cars are on the road everywhere, and in wine country, on the edges of Flamborough or out past Binbrook there may be none nearby at all. After concerts at TD Coliseum or games at Hamilton Stadium (the former Tim Hortons Field), everyone requests a ride at the same moment.
A pre-booked return has a named chauffeur, a fixed fare and a time you chose. If you are running late, you text the chauffeur; if you are early, you call dispatch. It is the difference between planning the end of the evening and hoping for it. For holiday parties and New Year's Eve, book the return first and the outward trip second.
Round trips for groups
With four or more people, the maths shifts again. A rideshare round trip for a group means two cars each way and four separate pickups. One booked vehicle does the same job with one pickup and one return. For six people, an executive SUV or luxury van seats everyone with bags; for up to fourteen, a Sprinter at $330–385 an hour keeps the group together for a game, a wedding or a day in Niagara. A four-hour Sprinter round trip is $1,320–1,540 all-in plus HST, $94–110 each for fourteen people before tax. The Sprinter group transportation page shows seats and luggage.
A quick way to decide
- How long will you be at the destination? Over 90 minutes, lean towards two one-way fares.
- Is the end time fixed? If not, book an open return or keep the car.
- Is the destination easy to leave? If not, keep the car or pre-book the return.
- Does anyone need help? If yes, keep the same chauffeur.
- Is it late at night? Pre-book the return, whatever you choose.
How to book a round trip direct
In the reservation engine, book the outward trip as one way, then add the return as a second one-way with a set or open time; or choose hourly and set the hours for the whole visit. The fixed fare appears before you confirm, with gratuity included and HST separate. Cancel more than 72 hours before pickup at no charge.
