Royal Botanical Gardens spans more than 2,190 acres across Hamilton and Burlington. In one visit, most people see the RBG Centre and Hendrie Park (680 Plains Road West, Burlington) and the Rock Garden (1185 York Boulevard, Hamilton), about 4 km and 8 minutes apart by car. Add Laking Garden or the Arboretum in late spring. Allow three to four hours; the trails stay open from early morning to dusk.
Royal Botanical Gardens: which gardens to see first
Royal Botanical Gardens is best understood as a family of gardens with a nature sanctuary wrapped around them. The formal gardens are split between two main sites a short drive apart, and the seasonal showpieces sit on their own lots further along. Trying to "do" all of it in a day leaves you tired and mostly in a car park. Choosing two or three areas by season works far better. If you want the transport side, fares from hotels and Pearson and where the car stops, our Royal Botanical Gardens chauffeur page covers that. This post is the visitor's plan: what each area is, when it shines, and the order to see them in.
The garden areas at a glance
| Area | Where | Best season | Time to allow |
|---|---|---|---|
| RBG Centre, Hendrie Park and indoor gardens | 680 Plains Road West, Burlington | late spring to autumn; indoor spaces all year | 60–90 min |
| Rock Garden | 1185 York Boulevard, Hamilton | May to end of October | 45–60 min |
| Laking Garden | own lot, off Plains Road West | late spring into early summer | 30–45 min |
| Arboretum | own lot and trailheads | late spring (lilacs) | 45–60 min |
| Trails and Cootes Paradise | trailheads around the property | year-round, early morning to dusk | 1–3 h |
| Driving between areas | 2–6 km per hop | any | 5–12 min per hop |
Distances are road distances between areas; planning fares for a business sedan from downtown Hamilton to the RBG Centre are $90–115 one way (about 8 km, 10–15 minutes) all-in plus HST, and an hourly chauffeur is $120–145 per hour with a three-hour minimum.
RBG Centre and Hendrie Park: the core of most visits
The RBG Centre on Plains Road West is the main building: garden shop, the Greenhouse Café, the Turner Pavilion Teahouse, the indoor Mediterranean Garden and the entrance to Hendrie Park. Hendrie Park holds the rose beds, themed gardens and long borders, and it is the most rewarding hour in the whole property from June through September. Because the Centre has the café and washrooms and the indoor spaces keep longer seasons, it is also the natural first stop in poor weather. Start here if you have only two hours.
The Rock Garden: the postcard view
The Rock Garden at 1185 York Boulevard is the most photographed corner of RBG, a sunken garden built in an old gravel pit with stone terraces, water and seasonal planting, and the Rock Garden Bistro beside it. RBG lists its main season as roughly May through the end of October, with limited winter hours, so check before planning a winter visit. Parking is in a lot across the road, with accessible spaces next to the building. From the RBG Centre it is a short drive of about 4 km. Allow 45 minutes, longer for photographers.
Laking Garden and the Arboretum: the spring specialists
These two are seasonal. The Arboretum is known for its lilac collection, which peaks in late spring and draws the biggest single crowds RBG sees. Laking Garden is the place for irises and peonies as spring turns to summer. Outside those windows both are pleasant but quieter. Each has its own small lot, and RBG notes that public transit does not reach them, which is where visitors without a car get stuck. If your visit falls in late May or June, swap one of the core sites for one of these.

Trails, Cootes Paradise and the nature sanctuaries
The formal gardens are the small part of RBG by area. Most of the 2,190-plus acres are nature lands around Cootes Paradise marsh and the ravines, with trails and boardwalks that RBG lists as open from 8 a.m. to dusk year-round. Birders and walkers come for these, and they are the best of RBG in autumn and winter. Trailheads are scattered, so a one-way walk with a pickup at the other end is a popular way to use them.
The best order for a three- to four-hour visit
Here is the order our dispatchers suggest most often, on a June weekday:
- RBG Centre and Hendrie Park first (90 min), while the morning is cool and the beds are fresh.
- Short hop to the Rock Garden (about 4 km, 8 min), 45–60 minutes, lunch at the bistro.
- One seasonal area: Laking Garden in iris season or the Arboretum in lilac season (40 min).
- Optional: a 30-minute boardwalk walk at the edge of Cootes Paradise before heading home.
In the other direction, from Hamilton, start at the Rock Garden and finish at the Centre with tea.
Which gardens by season
- Late April to May: spring bulbs, then the Arboretum lilacs. Weekends get busy.
- June: the best month overall; irises and peonies at Laking Garden, roses beginning in Hendrie Park.
- July and August: Hendrie Park and the Rock Garden in full summer planting; go early to beat the heat.
- September to October: autumn colour along the trails and ravines, late colour in the Rock Garden before it closes for the main season.
- November to March: the indoor spaces at the RBG Centre and the trails; the formal outdoor gardens rest.
Getting between the gardens without a car
This is the practical problem. The two main sites are about 4 km apart on busy roads, and the seasonal areas have no transit. On foot it is a long, unshaded walk along roads. A taxi or ride-hail works for a single hop, but you wait at each gate and pay for each leg. For visitors without a car, an hourly chauffeur in Hamilton is simply the easiest tool: the car moves you between areas, waits, and holds your shopping, and three hours in a sedan comes to roughly $360–435 all-in plus HST. The hourly vs point to point guide explains the break-even.

Visiting with older parents
Gardens are a favourite outing for visiting parents and grandparents, and RBG is kind to them: level paths in Hendrie Park, accessible parking at the main locations and a café for rests. The chauffeur can set down at the door of each area and collect there, which cuts the walking by half. A luxury van has the easiest step. Our fleet has no ramp-equipped vehicles, but a folding wheelchair or walker goes in the trunk. For more ideas on outings with elderly relatives, see a driver for elderly parents in Hamilton.
Visiting with children
Children enjoy the trails, the water in the Rock Garden and the wildlife around the marsh more than the formal beds. Keep the formal part short, then head for a boardwalk. Car seats can be added at booking for a planning figure of $10–15 each. A three-hour booking covers a relaxed family visit; add lunch and you are into four hours.
Photographers and wedding couples
Morning light at the Rock Garden and evening light in Hendrie Park are the two most requested slots. Professional photography needs a permit from RBG, which the photographer arranges with the garden. Wedding couples usually allocate 60–75 minutes for portraits between ceremony and reception; our wedding limo service times those runs.
What to check before you go
Three things change through the year and are worth a look the day before. First, hours by area: the RBG Centre, the Rock Garden and the trails each keep their own schedule, and the outdoor formal gardens have shorter seasons than the building. Second, admission and events: special exhibitions, festivals and evening events can change what is open and how busy the lots get. Third, what is in bloom: RBG posts seasonal highlights, and a lilac or iris peak can be over within two weeks. We do not print hours or prices here because they change; rbg.ca is the source, and we set the pickup time around whatever you find there.
A rainy-day version of the visit
Rain does not cancel a garden day; it reshapes it. Start indoors at the RBG Centre with the Mediterranean Garden and the café, walk Hendrie Park in the first dry spell, and keep the Rock Garden for a break in the weather since it is a short hop away. With a car on an hourly booking, nobody stands at a bus shelter in wet shoes; the chauffeur waits at the door with umbrellas, and you can cut the day short without losing a prepaid fare, because hourly time is only what you book plus any 30-minute extensions. Check the Environment Canada forecast the evening before and decide on the order then.
Arriving by train or plane on garden day
Visitors coming from Toronto often ride GO or VIA to Aldershot station in Burlington, which is only a few minutes from the RBG Centre, and have us meet the train; train tracking is included and 15 minutes of waiting is free on station pickups. Flying in, Toronto Pearson is about 58 km and 40–55 minutes from the RBG Centre via the 403 or QEW. Pickup at Pearson is curbside at the commercial pickup area, with 30 minutes of included waiting on Canadian domestic and US flights and 60 minutes on other international arrivals; meet and greet inside arrivals is an optional add-on. Luggage stays locked in the car while you walk. The Aldershot station pickup page shows where the car waits.
Staying nearby
The RBG Centre is in Burlington, a few minutes from Aldershot station and the hotels around the 403 and QEW; the Rock Garden is closer to Westdale and downtown Hamilton. Visitors staying at Burlington hotels or downtown Hamilton hotels are within about 10–15 minutes of either site, and both hotel pages list pickup details. Our Burlington car service page covers local runs.
Pairing RBG with the rest of the day
The Rock Garden is about 2 km from Dundurn Castle, which makes a garden-and-history day easy, and about 6 km from the harbour; our Hamilton waterfront, pier by pier post covers that end. For something wilder, African Lion Safari is a separate full day. Current hours, admission and events are always on rbg.ca; check them before you book the car. For wider trip planning, Tourism Hamilton's visitor site is the official source.
