The Niagara Icewine Festival is listed for January 8–30, 2027, with Discovery Pass tastings at wineries, the Icewine Village on Queen Street in Niagara-on-the-Lake and the Cool As Ice Gala at the Niagara Parks Power Station. From Hamilton, Niagara-on-the-Lake is about 70 km (50–60 min). An hourly chauffeur is $120–145 an hour in a sedan; a 6-hour day is $720–870.

Niagara Icewine Festival: why January is different

Our Niagara wine festival limo page covers both the September and January festivals and how we book them. This post is a weekend plan for the Icewine season specifically: shorter days, snowy vineyards, an outdoor village on a historic main street, and tasting a wine that exists only because Niagara winters are cold.

What is Icewine, in one minute?

Icewine is made from grapes left on the vine into winter and picked while naturally frozen, usually at night. The frozen water stays behind in the press, leaving a small amount of intensely sweet, concentrated juice. In Ontario the rules for labelling Icewine are set through the VQA system; VQA Ontario explains the standards. That scarcity is why a small bottle costs what it does, and why tastings are measured in small pours.

When is the Icewine Festival 2027?

Festival listings show January 8 to 30, 2027. The programme usually includes Discovery Pass weekends at participating wineries, the Icewine Village on Queen Street in Niagara-on-the-Lake over two weekends, and the Cool As Ice Gala at the Niagara Parks Power Station, held on the last Saturday in January. Confirm everything on the official Niagara Wine Festival site and its Icewine Village page, and on Niagara Parks for the Power Station.

How to pace an Icewine tasting day

Icewine is sweet and rich, and a full day of it tires the palate fast. Three or four wineries is plenty. Alternate Icewine pairings with a still wine or sparkling if the winery offers them, drink water between stops and eat a proper lunch. Paste your list into the booking notes and the chauffeur sequences stops to cut backtracking; our post on the best Niagara wineries to visit helps build the list.

The Icewine Village on Queen Street

Queen Street in Niagara-on-the-Lake is narrow and historic, and on Icewine Village weekends it becomes an outdoor tasting street. Parking nearby fills early and the side streets are residential. The chauffeur drops you at an open corner at the edge of the village area and waits at a legal spot nearby on an hourly booking. Sidewalks can be icy; good boots matter more than a smart coat. Our Niagara-on-the-Lake city page has the local road layout.

The Cool As Ice Gala

The gala is the dressed-up evening of the festival, held at the Niagara Parks Power Station in Niagara Falls on the last Saturday of January. It is ticketed and sells separately through the festival. For a gala night, a first-class sedan to and from a Niagara Falls or Niagara-on-the-Lake hotel is the usual booking; tell the desk the doors time and we plan the drop at the entrance the venue designates.

Where to stay

Niagara-on-the-Lake inns put you near Queen Street; Niagara Falls hotels are closer to the gala and cheaper on many weekends. Our Niagara-on-the-Lake hotels page describes where cars stop at each lobby. Staying over means Saturday's tasting and the drive home are on different days, which is the safest way to do an Icewine weekend.

January roads: what to expect

Lake-effect snow squalls can close visibility on the QEW through Grimsby and Beamsville in minutes, and the bench roads above the escarpment ice over after dark. It is dark by about five o'clock. Our chauffeurs drive these roads all winter with winter tires and switch routes when the QEW slows. Check Ontario 511 before setting off; if a severe storm is forecast, dispatch calls the day before to adjust timing rather than cancel.

Bringing bottles home

Icewine is usually sold in small bottles, and a case takes little room. Sealed purchases ride in the trunk; open bottles are not permitted in the vehicle. Cold is not a problem for a day in the car. Visitors heading back to the United States should read our post on duty-free limits after a Niagara wine trip before buying by the case.

Is a private driver worth it for Icewine?

For a couple doing one winery, perhaps not: a designated driver or an overnight stay works. For three or more wineries, the village and a gala, in January weather, the answer changes, because every alternative leaves someone driving icy bench roads after tasting. Our post on hiring a private driver for a Niagara wine tour sets out the maths, and the Niagara wine tours page covers the rest of the year.

Arriving from Toronto or Pearson on Friday

Many Icewine weekenders start in Toronto. From Union Station to Niagara-on-the-Lake is roughly 130 km along the Gardiner and the QEW, usually 1 hour 30 minutes to 2 hours on a Friday evening; from Pearson it is similar. Another plan is a GO or VIA train to Niagara Falls station and a short transfer from there; check timetables before relying on a late train. Guests from Hamilton simply start the weekend with a 50–60 minute transfer. Whatever the start point, book the Friday transfer and the Saturday hourly block together so the same desk plans both.

Dressing for an outdoor tasting

The Icewine Village is outdoors in January, and you will stand still more than you expect. Wear insulated, grippy boots, a hat and gloves you can hold a glass in, and a layer under your coat. Hand warmers help. Leave the heavy layer in the car when you move on to the wineries, where tasting rooms are warm. A dry pair of socks in the car bag is never wasted after an afternoon on a slushy street.

Mistakes we see every January

  1. Booking five or six wineries and tasting nothing properly by the fourth.
  2. Arriving at the village at 4:30 pm, just as the light goes.
  3. Driving home after the gala instead of staying over or booking a car.
  4. Not checking whether a winery requires reservations on festival weekends.
  5. Underestimating QEW squalls between Grimsby and St. Catharines.

Groups, birthdays and client days

For six friends, an executive SUV keeps everyone together with room for purchases; for seven to fourteen, a Sprinter from our own fleet at $330–385 an hour; and for a client or board day of up to seven, a Jet Sprinter, a VIP lounge with captain's chairs and work tables, at $650–750 an hour. A client Icewine afternoon in a first-class sedan is a memorable way to thank a customer; the chauffeur handles the timing and the host handles the conversation. Stretch limousines and party buses come from vetted partner operators, priced in writing by a coordinator.

Accessibility and icy streets

Queen Street's sidewalks and winery paths can be icy. Tell us at booking about any wheelchair, walker or cane, and we will plan the closest drop-offs and choose wineries with easy access where possible. For passengers who can transfer to a seat, we fold and stow wheelchairs and walkers.

Staying in Niagara Falls instead

Niagara Falls hotels are often cheaper than Niagara-on-the-Lake inns in January and sit close to the Power Station for the gala. The trade-off is a 20–25 minute drive to Queen Street and the wineries on the plain. With a chauffeur, that drive is part of the booked hours rather than a reason to stop tasting. Our Niagara Falls hotels page shows where cars stop at each lobby.

Icewine for a US visitor

Visitors from Western New York can make the festival a day trip. From Buffalo, Niagara-on-the-Lake is roughly 50 km via the Lewiston-Queenston Bridge, usually under an hour plus the border. Carry a passport, passport card, NEXUS card or enhanced licence, and check limits on alcohol you bring back before you buy. A chauffeur who drives the bridges every week takes the border paperwork questions off your hands.

Saturday or Sunday: which day to taste?

Saturdays are the liveliest days at the Icewine Village and the busiest in the tasting rooms. Sundays are calmer, with shorter lines and more time to talk to the staff pouring, which many serious wine lovers prefer. If your weekend allows, do the village on Saturday for the atmosphere and the wineries on Sunday for the tasting. It also spreads the driving over two days, which is kinder to everyone in January weather.

FAQ

Questions, answered

When is the Niagara Icewine Festival 2027?

Festival listings show January 8 to 30, 2027, with Discovery Pass weekends at wineries, the Icewine Village on Queen Street in Niagara-on-the-Lake over two weekends and the Cool As Ice Gala on the last Saturday of January. Confirm dates and tickets on niagarawinefestival.com.

Where is the Icewine Village?

On Queen Street in historic Niagara-on-the-Lake, which becomes an outdoor tasting street over two January weekends. Parking nearby fills early; a chauffeured drop-off at the edge of the village area avoids circling residential streets.

Where is the Cool As Ice Gala held?

At the Niagara Parks Power Station in Niagara Falls, on the last Saturday of January. It is ticketed separately through the Niagara Wine Festival. A first-class sedan to and from a Niagara hotel is a common booking for gala night.

How far is Niagara-on-the-Lake from Hamilton?

About 70 km, usually 50 to 60 minutes along the QEW, longer in winter squalls. A business sedan one way is a planning figure of $230 to $280 all-in plus HST, and an hourly sedan is $120 to $145 an hour with a 3-hour minimum.

How many wineries should we visit on an Icewine day?

Three or four is plenty, because Icewine is sweet and rich and tires the palate. Mix in still or sparkling wines where offered, eat a proper lunch and drink water between stops. The chauffeur orders stops to cut backtracking.

What is Icewine?

Wine made from grapes left on the vine into winter and harvested while naturally frozen, which concentrates the sugar and flavour in a small amount of juice. Ontario labelling standards are set through the VQA system.

Can we bring Icewine home in the car?

Yes. Sealed bottles and cases ride in the trunk, and the cold does them no harm for a day. Open bottles are not permitted in the vehicle. US visitors should check duty-free allowances before buying in quantity.

Is Icewine season a good time for a Niagara weekend?

Yes, if you plan for winter. Crowds are smaller than in harvest season except on Icewine Village weekends, hotel rates are often lower, and snowy vineyards are beautiful. Days are short and roads can be icy, so start early, stay overnight rather than driving after tastings, and let a chauffeur handle the QEW and the bench roads.
