London Ontario airport is London International Airport (YXU), at 10 Seabrook Way on the northeast edge of London, about 130 km from downtown Hamilton. The drive takes 85-105 minutes via Highway 403 and the 401. A pre-booked business sedan is a $415-500 planning range one way, all-in plus HST. Check flyyxu.ca for current routes before comparing it with Pearson.
Most Hamilton travellers only look at London International when a fare search throws it up. This post is the practical companion to our London airport limo from Hamilton page: what the airport is, how people actually get there from Hamilton, what the whole trip costs against Pearson, and the mistakes we see on the way.
London Ontario airport: what and where is YXU?
London International Airport uses the code YXU and sits at 10 Seabrook Way, on the northeast side of the city, near the eastern end of London's industrial belt. It is a single, compact terminal: one check-in hall, one security line, a short walk to the gates. For a Hamilton traveller that compactness is the main attraction, because the airport end of the trip is quick even though the road end is long.
The airport's own website is the only reliable list of what flies. When we looked on 30 September 2026, flyyxu.ca showed Air Canada to Toronto, WestJet to Calgary and Winnipeg, and seasonal sun and Florida service with Porter, Sunwing and Air Transat to places such as Orlando, Fort Lauderdale, Cancún, Montego Bay and Punta Cana. Seasonal programmes start and stop, so treat that as a snapshot and confirm your own route with the airline.
How far is London airport from Hamilton, and which way do you drive?
Door to door it is about 130 km from downtown Hamilton, a little less from Ancaster and a little more from Stoney Creek or Burlington. The chauffeur leaves on Highway 403 westbound, passes Brantford, joins the 401 near Woodstock and follows it to London's east side before heading north to the terminal.
| Start point | Distance to YXU | Typical drive | Business sedan (planning range, all-in + HST) |
|---|---|---|---|
| Downtown Hamilton | about 130 km | 85-105 min | $415-500 |
| Ancaster | about 120 km | 75-95 min | $380-470 |
| Brantford | about 95 km | 60-80 min | $315-380 |
| Burlington | about 145 km | 95-115 min | $455-550 |
For comparison, the same downtown Hamilton pickup is $245-300 to Toronto Pearson (about 70 km, 45-65 min) and $90-115 to Hamilton airport YHM (15 km, 20-25 min). A business SUV (Tahoe or Yukon class, five passengers and five bags) adds about 30 %, a luxury van about 50 % and an executive SUV about 65 %; a first-class sedan is about 2.5 times the sedan figure, and a Sprinter about 2.75 times. The reservation engine gives the exact fixed fare for your address, date and vehicle.
When does flying from London beat Pearson for a Hamilton traveller?
Only when the whole trip wins, not the ticket alone. Three situations come up again and again at our dispatch desk:
- A sun package that is meaningfully cheaper from YXU. Charter and leisure fares from smaller airports sometimes undercut Pearson by more than the extra ground cost, especially for a family buying four or five seats.
- A London-area reason for the trip. Business at Western, a hospital appointment in London, family in Woodstock or St. Thomas: the airport is simply nearer to where you need to be.
- A schedule that suits. A departure time that means you are not queuing at Pearson's security at the busiest hour of the morning, or a return that lands before midnight rather than after.
If none of those apply, Pearson or YHM will almost always be the shorter, cheaper ground leg.
The whole-trip maths: London versus Pearson for a family of four
Here is the calculation the dispatcher runs when a family asks us to compare. Four people, two adults and two children, one week in the sun, departing from the Hamilton Mountain with four large cases, so an executive SUV both ways.
- To YXU and back: two SUV transfers at roughly $625-825 each, so $1,250-1,650 plus HST for ground transport.
- To Pearson and back: two SUV transfers at roughly $370-495 each, so $740-990 plus HST.
- The difference: roughly $510-640 more to use London.
So if four London tickets save less than about $600 over the Pearson equivalent, Pearson wins on money. If they save $800, London still wins after the longer drive. Add the time factor honestly too: London adds about 40 minutes of road each way, but the smaller terminal can give some of that back at check-in and at baggage claim.

Driving yourself and parking at YXU, or being driven?
Plenty of people drive themselves to London and park. For a couple on a short trip that can be the cheapest option. The airport advertises on-site parking; check the current daily and weekly rates on its website before you decide, because a week's parking plus fuel and 260 km of wear on your own car narrows the gap more than people expect.
Being driven wins in three cases. First, the early departure: a 6 a.m. sun flight from YXU means leaving Hamilton around 2:30 a.m., and nobody should drive the 401 half-asleep. Second, the late return: charter flights that land after midnight leave you with a 90-minute drive in the dark after a long travel day. Third, winter: a week's snow on a parked car in an open lot, then the 401 through the Woodstock-London squall belt, is a poor end to a holiday.
What does a YXU departure day look like with a chauffeur?
A typical sun departure, with a 7:00 a.m. flight from London and a pickup in Stoney Creek:
- Evening before: dispatch confirms the pickup time, the vehicle and the chauffeur's name by message; you set out passports and documents by the door.
- 3:30 a.m.: the chauffeur arrives, loads the cases and checks that the passports are in someone's hand rather than a suitcase.
- 3:40 a.m.: onto the Red Hill Valley Parkway and the Linc, then the 403 west. At this hour the highways are close to empty.
- 4:35 a.m.: past Brantford and onto the 401 near Woodstock.
- 5:15 a.m.: at the YXU departures curb, about 1 hour 45 minutes before the flight, which is comfortable for an international sun flight at a small terminal.
The chauffeur unloads, and you walk in. Winter pickups move 20-30 minutes earlier.
Arriving at YXU late at night: the return leg
Charter returns often land late. Your chauffeur tracks the flight from its departure point, so if the aircraft leaves Cancún two hours behind, the car's timing moves with it at no charge. Included waiting is 60 minutes from actual landing on international arrivals and 30 minutes on domestic and US flights, then 15-minute blocks. The fare includes curbside pickup in the commercial pickup area; if a grandparent or a first-time visitor is on board, add meet and greet at booking (planning figure $25-35) so the chauffeur is inside with a name board. The drive home is 85-105 minutes, and most children are asleep before Brantford.
Can I take the train or a bus to London airport instead?
Yes, with a caveat. VIA Rail runs trains from Aldershot station in Burlington to London's downtown station, and intercity coaches run along the 401 corridor. Neither goes to the terminal, so you still need a taxi or a local ride from downtown London to the northeast corner of the city with your bags. Our post on VIA Rail at Aldershot station explains how the train side works. For a solo traveller with a carry-on and time to spare, train plus taxi is the budget option. For anyone with checked bags, children or an early flight, the timings rarely line up.
Five mistakes Hamilton travellers make with YXU
- Comparing airfares without the ground cost. Run the whole-trip maths above before you book the tickets.
- Forgetting the 401. The Woodstock-Ingersoll stretch is heavy with trucks and has closures after collisions; London time estimates need a buffer.
- Booking a sedan for sun-holiday luggage. Three passengers and three bags is the sedan limit; a family of four with cases needs an SUV or van.
- Assuming winter is the same as Hamilton's. Lake-effect squalls off Lake Huron can whiten London while Hamilton is dry. Check Ontario 511 and let dispatch add time.
- Not telling us about a Brantford stop. Collecting a relative on the way is simple if it is booked; improvised on the day, it can make you late.
Making a day of it: meetings or family in London
Because the drive is long, many travellers combine the airport run with something else. A consultant landing at YXU with meetings at Western University or the hospitals before heading home to Hamilton can book an hourly chauffeur instead of two one-way transfers: one car and chauffeur for a 3-hour minimum, business sedan $120-145 per hour all-in plus HST. A six-hour day (land, two meetings, lunch, the drive home) comes in around $720-870, and the chauffeur waits outside every stop with your bag in the trunk. For ideas on where to eat or stay in London, Tourism London keeps the official listings.

Staying overnight before an early YXU flight
If the flight is very early and you would rather not leave at 3 a.m., stay near the airport the night before. We drive you to London in the evening, when the 401 is lighter, and the airport is a short hop in the morning. Our travel desk can add the hotel. The same idea works in reverse at Pearson; see the Pearson airport hotels page if that ends up the better airport, and our hotels hub for the rest of the region.
Who else uses YXU from our side of the map?
It is not only Hamiltonians. We drive people from Brantford, Paris and Woodstock to London regularly, because for them YXU is closer than Pearson. The same fixed-fare logic applies from their door. If you are unsure which airport is nearest in time rather than distance, send the dispatcher your address and two flight options and we will price both routes for the same date.
How to book the London airport transfer direct
Book on HamiltonLimo.net's own reservation engine: choose London International, enter your flight number, pickup address, passengers, checked bags and any child seats ($10-15 each, planning figure), and you see a fixed all-in fare with HST shown separately before you pay. No app, no aggregator. Book the return at the same time so the car is already assigned to your landing. Cancellation is free more than 72 hours before pickup, 10 % at 72 hours or less, 50 % at 48 hours or less and 100 % at 24 hours or less or a no-show. Full airport coverage is on our airport limo page and the drive itself on the Hamilton to London route.
