A Detroit to Hamilton car service covers about 300 km and takes 3.25 to 4 hours door to door, crossing into Windsor by the Ambassador Bridge, the Detroit-Windsor Tunnel or the new Gordie Howe International Bridge, then running Highway 401 and Highway 403. Planning fares for a business sedan are $940 to $1,150 all-in plus HST, booked direct on HamiltonLimo.net.
Detroit to Hamilton car service: the short version
Most travellers who ask us for a Detroit to Hamilton car service are doing one of three things: flying into Detroit Metropolitan Airport (DTW) because the fare or schedule beat Toronto, finishing a meeting in downtown Detroit or the suburbs, or moving a family member between the two cities with more luggage than a flight allows. In every case the job is the same shape. A chauffeur collects you on the Michigan side, drives you across one of the three Windsor crossings, and takes the 401 east through Chatham, London and Woodstock before turning onto the 403 for Brantford and Hamilton. You stay in the same seat for the whole trip, you clear Canadian customs once, and the car drops you at the door rather than at a bus bay or a rental return.
Planning fares, distance and drive time
These are planning figures for a one-way trip to downtown Hamilton. The reservation engine quotes the exact pickup address, date and vehicle, and the fare it shows is fixed and all-in: chauffeur, vehicle, fuel, bridge or tunnel toll, 407 tolls if we use them, airport fees and gratuity, with HST shown separately.
| Pickup | Distance | Drive time | Business sedan | Executive SUV |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Downtown Detroit | about 300 km | 3.25 - 4 h | $940 - 1,150 | $1,550 - 1,900 |
| Detroit Metro Airport (DTW) | about 330 km | 3.5 - 4.25 h | $1,025 - 1,250 | $1,690 - 2,065 |
| Windsor, Ontario side | about 290 km | 3 - 3.5 h | $900 - 1,100 | $1,485 - 1,815 |
A first-class sedan runs at about 2.5 times the business-sedan figure, a Sprinter at about 2.75 times and a Jet Sprinter, a VIP lounge for up to seven, at about 4.65 times. Destinations beyond downtown Hamilton, such as Ancaster, Stoney Creek or Burlington, add a little; the engine prices them precisely. Our Hamilton limo prices guide explains how we build every range.
Which crossing we use: Ambassador Bridge, tunnel or Gordie Howe
Detroit and Windsor now have three road crossings, and choosing the right one is the single biggest thing a dispatcher can do for your travel time. The Ambassador Bridge is the long-standing truck and car route. The Detroit-Windsor Tunnel runs from downtown Detroit straight into downtown Windsor and suits pickups near the Renaissance Center. The Gordie Howe International Bridge, which opened to traffic in late July 2026, links Delray on the Michigan side to Highway 401 via the Herb Gray Parkway, so it often suits DTW and I-75 pickups. We check wait times before the chauffeur commits and pick whichever crossing is quickest at that hour; the toll is already inside your fare.

Picking you up at DTW
Detroit Metropolitan Airport sits in Romulus, southwest of the city, and has two terminals: McNamara and Evans. Check your booking to see which one your airline uses, then enter your flight number when you book. We track the flight, so an early arrival or a delay moves the chauffeur's timing with it. The fare includes curbside pickup at the terminal's commercial pickup area; meet and greet inside the terminal with a name board is an optional add-on, planning figure $25 to $35. Included waiting is 30 minutes from actual landing for flights from within the US or Canada and 60 minutes for other international arrivals, then 15-minute blocks. The airport's own site at metroairport.com has terminal maps and ground transportation details.
Pickups in downtown Detroit and the suburbs
Not every Detroit to Hamilton trip starts at the airport. We collect from hotels downtown and in Midtown, from offices in Dearborn, Southfield and Troy, from Ann Arbor, and from the Grosse Pointes. The further north or west the pickup, the more likely we are to use the Ambassador Bridge or the Gordie Howe rather than the tunnel, because the approach roads are faster. If you have two stops on the US side, for example a hotel checkout and then a colleague's office, add both at booking so the fare reflects the real route. If your day on the Michigan side involves several meetings before the drive, it is often cheaper and calmer to book the chauffeur by the hour for that part; see the section on hourly service below.
The drive through southwestern Ontario
Once you are in Windsor the route is simple and long: Highway 401 east for well over 150 km through farmland, past Chatham and around London, then Highway 403 from Woodstock through Brantford into Hamilton. The 401 here is a busy truck corridor, so our chauffeurs keep to the right-hand lanes, hold a steady speed and avoid the stop-start weaving that tires passengers. From the 403 we come down into Hamilton either on the Main Street exit for downtown and the lower city, or via the Lincoln M. Alexander Parkway for the Mountain, Ancaster and Stoney Creek. The chauffeur checks Ontario 511 before leaving Windsor for closures and collisions, which on the 401 can add real time.
Rest stops along the 401
A three-and-a-half hour drive usually wants one short stop. Ontario's ONroute service centres on the 401 between Windsor and London have washrooms, coffee and fuel, and are the easiest place to pause for ten minutes. Tell us at booking if you want a planned stop, or simply ask the chauffeur on the way. Families with young children, travellers who have just come off a long flight and anyone with a medical need should plan on one stop from the outset. Short comfort stops are part of the service; a sit-down meal of 45 minutes or more is better booked as waiting time so the fare is clear up front. Bottled water is in the car.
Documents for the Canadian border
Everyone in the car is inspected by the Canada Border Services Agency when we reach Windsor. Canadian citizens and permanent residents need a passport, a NEXUS card or the equivalent document. US citizens should carry a passport, passport card, NEXUS card or enhanced driver's licence. Visitors of other nationalities need the documents Canada requires for their nationality; an Electronic Travel Authorization is required for visa-exempt travellers flying into Canada but not for those arriving by land, so check the eTA page and the CBSA site for your own case. For the return trip into the US the rules are set by US Customs and Border Protection. Have documents in hand, not packed in the trunk.
What the officer will ask, and how the chauffeur helps
At the booth the chauffeur lowers the windows and hands over documents for everyone if asked, but each passenger answers questions for themselves: where you live, why you are coming to Canada, how long you are staying and what you are bringing. Declare goods honestly, including gifts and anything bought in the US. Cannabis cannot be carried across the border in either direction, even though it is legal in Ontario and Michigan. Firearms, large amounts of cash, fresh food and some plants have their own rules. Occasionally a car is sent to secondary inspection; this is routine and the chauffeur waits with you. We plan a buffer into every border trip so a slow booth does not spill into a missed dinner or meeting.

Choosing the vehicle
For one to three people with normal luggage the business sedan is the practical choice. Four or five travellers, or anyone who wants winter traction without the executive price, suit the business SUV, a black Tahoe or Yukon for up to five passengers and five bags, at about $1,225–1,495 from downtown Detroit. If you are carrying golf bags, sample cases or a family's worth of suitcases, the executive SUV seats six and holds six bags, which is also the better car on the 401 in a snowstorm. A first-class sedan suits an executive who wants to work or sleep in real quiet for four hours. Groups travelling together, such as a sports team, a wedding party or a company crew, fit in a Sprinter with 14 seats and room for 14 bags. Stretch limousines and coaches come from vetted partner operators in the LimousineWorldwide.Directory network and are priced by a coordinator.
Why a car beats a connecting flight or the train
Detroit to Hamilton has no direct air or rail link, so the alternatives are a connecting flight through Toronto, a rental car with a one-way international drop fee, or a combination of train and bus via Windsor and London. Each adds a transfer, a queue or a return problem. A private car is one booking, one border stop and no connection to miss. For a single business traveller a connecting flight can still be cheaper; for two or three people, anyone with bulky luggage, or anyone who needs to be at a Hamilton address rather than an airport, the car often wins on total time, and split two or three ways it is competitive with connecting fares once the onward transfer to Hamilton is added. Our cross-border limo service page compares these options for other US cities too.
Timing: rush hour, weekends and winter
The fastest departures from Detroit are mid-morning and early afternoon, after the Detroit and Windsor rush and before the 401 fills around London and Woodstock. Leaving downtown Detroit at 5 p.m. on a Friday can add 45 minutes. Summer weekends bring cottage and holiday traffic east of London, and long weekends in both countries lengthen the border lines. Winter matters more on this route than almost any other we drive: the stretch of 401 between Windsor and London is exposed to lake-effect snow and crosswinds, and we build extra time into January and February bookings. If a storm closes the highway, dispatch will call you to reschedule rather than send a chauffeur into a closure.
Hourly service once you reach Hamilton
Many Detroit travellers are not finished when they reach Hamilton. If you have a site visit in Stoney Creek, a meeting at McMaster, a family visit in Ancaster and a hotel check-in, keep the same car and chauffeur and switch to hourly time on arrival. Our hourly chauffeur service in Hamilton runs at $120 to $145 an hour for a business sedan with a three-hour minimum; a four-hour sedan block is $480 to $580 all-in plus HST. That way luggage stays in the trunk, nobody waits for a taxi between stops, and the chauffeur who drove you from Detroit already knows your schedule. The same applies on the way back: book a private chauffeur for the day and end with the drive to DTW.
Going the other way: Hamilton to Detroit and DTW
The trip works just as well westbound, and we see it for early flights out of DTW, Detroit Pistons and Red Wings games, auto-industry meetings and university moves. For a morning flight we usually suggest an overnight near the airport rather than a 3 a.m. departure from Hamilton; the chauffeur can drop you at an airport hotel the evening before. The US border inspection happens on the Detroit side of the bridge or tunnel, and the same document rules apply. For an early flight from closer to home, compare Hamilton to Buffalo airport and Toronto Pearson, both shorter drives.
How to book direct
Book on the HamiltonLimo.net reservation engine using the floating Book now button on any page or the booking page. Enter the pickup address or the DTW flight number, the Hamilton destination, the date and the number of passengers and bags. The engine shows the fixed all-in fare before you confirm, with no meter, no surge and no marketplace commission. You get a confirmation, and the chauffeur's name and mobile number are sent before pickup. Cancellation is measured from scheduled pickup: more than 72 hours out is free; 72 hours or less is 10 %; 48 hours or less is 50 %; 24 hours or less or a no-show is 100 %.
Children, accessibility and pets
Infant seats, convertible seats and boosters are available on request at a planning figure of $10 to $15 each; add them at booking so the right seat is installed before the chauffeur leaves Hamilton. Our own fleet has no ramp-equipped vehicles, but for passengers who can transfer to a seat we fold and stow wheelchairs and walkers in the trunk. Travellers who need a ramp vehicle for a long cross-border trip should tell us early and we will refer you to a specialist accessible provider. Pets travel in a carrier by arrangement, and border rules for animals, including vaccination papers, apply to them too.
