Supercrawl Hamilton is a free arts and music festival on James Street North, usually on the second weekend of September; the next edition is listed for September 10–12, 2027. James Street North and parts of its cross streets close to cars, so get dropped at the edge on Bay Street North, John Street North or an open east–west street. A sedan within Hamilton is $75–100 one way, or $120–145 an hour.
Supercrawl Hamilton: the weekend in one paragraph
Supercrawl began in 2009 and now fills about a kilometre of James Street North, plus side-street stages, with free music, art installations, performance and vendors from Friday evening to Sunday. For fares, vehicles and how our Supercrawl car service works, see that page. This guide is about the weekend itself: what closes, when to go, how visitors and families plan it, and the late-night questions people ask us every September. The one rule to remember is that no car, ours included, drives on James Street North during festival hours.
When is Supercrawl, and how long does it run?
The festival usually runs Friday evening, all day Saturday and Sunday afternoon into the evening on the second weekend of September. The 2026 edition ran September 11 to 13, and at the time of writing the festival site lists September 10 to 12,

Which streets close for Supercrawl?
The core closure is James Street North through the north end of downtown, with parts of the cross streets inside the footprint closed as well. The whole event, including side stages and installations, spreads over more than two kilometres of streets. The exact map and closure hours are set each year, and the City of Hamilton posts traffic notices in the week before. Plan for three things: James itself is pedestrian only, the parallel streets carry diverted traffic and heavy foot traffic, and on-street parking near the footprint is scarce by early evening.

Where is the best place to be dropped off?
Pick the drop-off by the stage you want first, not by the festival's "centre". Useful edges:
Art Gallery of Hamilton area.
- South end: near King William Street or Wilson Street, handy if you are starting with dinner or the
- Middle: Bay Street North or John Street North at Cannon Street, walking in from the side.
- North end: near West Harbour GO on James Street North, where the crowd thins and the walk home to a car is calmer.
Our chauffeurs stop only at legal, open curbs outside the closure and text you the exact corner. For people who cannot walk far, tell us which block matters most and we will aim for the nearest open cross street.
How do you get home from Supercrawl late at night?
This is the question that decides how the evening goes. Saturday night brings the biggest exodus, and every ride-hail car in the lower city is trying to reach the same few blocks. Options, from cheapest to most certain:
- Walk or cycle if you live in the lower city.
- HSR on King, Main or Barton; check HSR for festival detours.
- GO train from West Harbour or Hamilton GO Centre, if you can make the last train; check GO Transit.
- A timed chauffeur pickup set for a corner outside the closure.
- An hourly chauffeur, already parked nearby when you text.

airport or Union Station.
- Friday: arrive by train or flight, check in downtown, walk into the Friday opening evening and walk back. No car needed
- Saturday: slow morning at the Hamilton Farmers' Market, afternoon installations in daylight, dinner on Locke Street, then
- Sunday: a morning at the waterfalls or Dundas Peak, a last afternoon on James Street North, and a transfer to the
What does a Supercrawl night cost with a chauffeur?
Planning figures, all-in plus HST: a sedan one way is $75–100 within Hamilton (up to 15 km, 10–25 min), $90–115 from Burlington (about 15 km, 15–25 min), $145–175 from Oakville (about 40 km, 30–40 min) and $270–330 from downtown Toronto (about 68 km, 50–75 min). Hourly, a sedan is $120–145 an hour and a 14-seat Sprinter $330–385 an hour, both with a 3-hour minimum.

Is hourly or one-way better for Supercrawl?
One-way wins if you live close, know when you will leave and do not mind setting a firm pickup time. Hourly wins when the night has more than one stop (dinner, a gallery, a second area of the festival), when you have guests from out of town, or when you simply do not want to commit to a time. The deeper maths is in our hourly vs point-to-point guide.
Supercrawl with children
Weekend afternoons are the family window: more room on the street, installations you can see in daylight and earlier sets. Bring ear protection for little ones near the main stages, agree a meeting landmark with older children, and plan to leave before the evening crowd builds. We supply infant, convertible and booster seats on request at a planning figure of $10–15 each, installed before pickup. A luxury minivan fits a folded stroller and a wagon. A 3-hour van booking covers a relaxed afternoon.
Bringing an older parent
Supercrawl is a lot of standing and walking on pavement. For an older guest, pick one or two stages rather than the whole street, drop them at the nearest open cross street, and have the car return to the same corner at a set time. For passengers who can transfer to a seat, we fold and stow wheelchairs and walkers. The chauffeur can take an older guest home early while the rest of the group stays on, which is easy to arrange on an hourly booking.
Food, drink and the licensed areas
Food vendors line the street and restaurants along James North stay busy all weekend, so book dinner tables well ahead. Any licensed areas are run by the festival and venues; follow their rules. We do not permit open alcohol in our vehicles, but unopened purchases and anything from the artisan stalls can ride in the trunk. Carrying shopping all night is one of the small reasons people keep a car on standby.

Common Supercrawl mistakes
- Setting a pickup "on James Street". Cars cannot get there.
- Parking in a residential permit zone and returning to a ticket.
- Planning to leave exactly when the last headliner ends, with everyone else.
- Wearing new shoes. It is a long, hard-surfaced walk.
- Forgetting a layer: September nights cool quickly after dark; check Environment Canada.
Coming from Toronto by train, going home by car
A popular pattern for Toronto visitors: a Saturday afternoon GO train to West Harbour, the festival and dinner on foot, and a chauffeured ride back to the city after the last set, when trains are infrequent or finished. Our post on GO train to a Toronto concert vs a car walks through the same trade-off in reverse, and the Hamilton to downtown Toronto route page has the full fare list.
Supercrawl as a date night
Plenty of couples treat the Saturday as their big night out of the month. A simple shape that works: a first-class sedan collects you at 6:00, drops you for dinner at a restaurant near the festival's south end, you walk north through the installations as the light fades, catch one headline set and are collected at the north end near West Harbour. Five hours in a first-class sedan at $285–350 an hour is $1,425–1,750 all-in plus HST; in a business sedan, $600–725. For proposals, flowers or a stop at a Mountain brow lookout on the way home, see date nights and proposals.
Where to stay for Supercrawl weekend
The closer you sleep to James Street North, the less you need a car during the festival itself. Downtown hotels are a short walk from the south end of the closure. Guests who prefer the lake can stay in Burlington, about 15 km and 15–25 minutes away, and use a one-way car each evening; our Burlington hotels page covers where cars stop at each lobby. For a wider look at the neighbourhoods around the festival, the downtown Hamilton page explains the lower city, the Mountain and the accesses between them, which matters if your hotel is up on the escarpment.
Accessibility at a street festival
The festival footprint is long and mostly paved, with crowds that thicken sharply after dark. For guests using a cane, walker or wheelchair, the afternoon is easier than the evening, and the side-street edges are calmer than the central blocks. Choose one or two stages, tell us which block you want, and we will drop at the nearest open corner and return to it at a set time. We do not run ramp-equipped vehicles; for passengers who can transfer to a seat, the chauffeur folds and stows the chair or walker.
